  • In this installment I describe some theory and practical Airbrush application for HO Scale Track and Ballast weathering. Music track: Everything You Wanted by Dan Lebowitz.
    The Tamiya Paints I use:
    1. XF-52 Flat Earth
    2. XF-57 Buff
    3. XF-60 Dark Yellow
    4. XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan
    5. XF-49 Khaki
    6.XF-79 Linoleum Deck Brown (with some red?).
    7. XF-5 Flat Green
    8. XF-3 Flat Yellow
    All the above Acrylic paints thinned with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.
    *** Custom Mauve: Start with 80% XF-2 Flat White, 15% XF-52 Flat Earth, 5% X-16 Purple (add more white or less purple if it`s too pink. Don`t be afraid to experiment a little and play around. You can also try toning down "pink" with lots of white as well coupled with some earth.

    Hi Boomer, I've just discovered your excellent channel. I have an air brush sitting in its box with a compressor (both never used), I have also been on a beginners air brush weathering course. Since watching your videos I feel more inspired to have a go, you have taken away the myth a lot of modellers have that airbrushing is something of a hidden black art. I now feel more confident especially after you explained that you can make the paint extra thin and no need to buy really expensive equipment when you can reduce the amount of air flow etc to achieve a convincing result. Thanks again for sharing this, much appreciated. Regards, John.

      Thank You John. The whole intention for this episode was exactly what you described. I am glad to hear this. I will be starting another "paint" series in the New Year. Hopefully, I can expand a little more on the subject. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and family. - Boomer.

    Oh boy, your airbrush is as old as I am :) Many people wear out their airbrushes in only a few years, but they're also buying cheap ones from China. A good quality airbrush is an excellent investment.

    Amazing work! This video sets the perfect example for art imitates life and vise versa. A great modeler of whom has inspired me once said, " Modeling should follow real life and it's made up of many many layers and textures." You are right on about Mauve. Makes a great color for blackberry canes - look real close (but not too close - you know what I mean!). When I lived in Washington State I picked enough Blackberries to get a good look at the purplish-gray color on the canes. Southern pine bark has a mauve tint as well, so it is all over the place.
    But let me challenge you to stop saying "random". Nature isn't random. The patterns are there if you know how to see them, and once you do, you can't un-see them! Wind, water, seed, dust, it all works through patterns of flow. Weed seeds spread and gather along the edges of roads, buildings, tracks, etc. where water and nutrients gather too! Everything we see has happened because something caused it to happen that way. Look for the patterns in nature and duplicate them in the same way you study a structure or freight car to duplicate what you see.

      Thanks for the great tips and observations. Mauve is a great color for sure. Cheers. ~ Boomer.

    Don´t forget muddy spots. My trancontinental neighbor mainlines have weld track but at crossing rail joints it´s muddy. Side of rails, ties, ballast, everything is muddy color. On not in service tracks, it can be grassy up to a lush forest. Dark brown rusty rails sometimes get covered by vegetation. At crossing wheel flange is full of dirt and can also cover railhead. Also with rubber tires passing on them they get a dark silver color. Details à la Boomer that make your layout outstanding. And why not roadway paint lines above rails ?

      I still have these. I pulled them up and they look really cool with natural weathering. ;-)

    Do you typically clean your railheads after and seal the rest of the track in with a dull coat? I love the look of a dirty railhead, but have always been nervous to see how locomotives run on top of them... thanks.
    Happy New Years!

      If it's "dead" rail nothing matters (battery powered - radio control). On the other hand, if power comes from contact to rail it needs to be clean.😁

    For whatever reason i started out using enamel paints when i got back into the hobby in 2015. I think i heard that the model master line has been discontinued so i likely will switch to Tamiya paints. Do you need to specially prepare metal surfaces (like the sides of the rails for example) so that the acrylic paints adhere fully to the metal? Just IPA on a toothbrush or some other method?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  8 месяцев назад

      I just spray Tamiya with an Airbrush. If you want to use a regular paint brush, use the "Vallejo" acrylic colors. They are the equivalent to the old model masters that you can thin with water.

    • @ChessiePAdiv
      @ChessiePAdiv 8 месяцев назад

      I plan on using an airbrush. Any issues with the acrylic bonding to the metal rails?

  • @danielfantino1714

    On ALL layouts that
    i´ve see seen, guard rails, frogs and bridge safety rails are always shiny. That´s total nonsense. Since you already paint them, the job is done. Just clean the frog part where wheels pass on. A bit sketchy but your detailing so much that should make a big difference. Same thing close to bumper. Don´t know if usual markers we use can do it ? Or on a lightly use spur, letting the current pass ?
    Cheers as always.

    (in another video) you mentioned care in choosing a compressor due to moisture in the lines as it gets hot.. do you use an air pig with a regulator or a small tank compressor? I currently have a diaphram compressor with no tank and I do have to bleed off the inline moisture trap every time I use it. Plus the "regulator" isn't a guage showing the pressure..it's just a screw that allows air flow in the line.
