The nano-texture is etched into the screen so it needs to be carefully wiped that's why the polishing cloth is included. Normal display can be wiped with much rougher material.
While RAM and storage upgrade prices are insane, the hardware are way worth the price. Beating and matching desktop machines that pull more power at that. In gaming, even through emulation, is pretty impressive. I'd really like to see a regular max spec M4 (not ram or storage) and see the gaming performance compared to Lunar Lake and Ryzen AI whatever the newest one is.

@matthewmoniz after the reviews started coming out last night I realized just how friggin good this iteration is. I’m primarily running an ecom business and doing some video editing. I realized the max was just overkill and I was spec chasing. I didn’t even open the max haha. Brought it straight to Best Buy and exchanged for the 16 M4 pro with 24gb and 512gb and an amazing external hd. I’m in love and feel like I made the right choice for my use case.

@MatthewMoniz Yeah most YTs that test WoW just run around on a starter account that tells us nothing. Need some raid numbers to really see how a machine performs.
For gaming performance the 4080 was likely bottlenecked by the CPU on the ASUS, since resolution was only 1920x1200, otherwise I expect the 4080 would’ve pulled away further.

Great review, I would like to ask you guys for a suggestion. I currently have an almost 5 years old MacBook Air 2020 with intel i3 1,1Ghz. Seeing the used market it sells around 400/450€ here in Italy. I was thinking in doing the investment of a MBP M4 base model with the educational discount. I see much discordant opinions online, would you think it would be a great investment to do instantly or would it be better to wait for the MBP M5 of next year? I’ve heard it is going to have OLED, possibly new design etc. But I’m not an expert so correct me if I’m wrong. Let me know!
If you need to change your laptop because the one you have now can't keep up with your needs then go for it, it's pointless to wait a whole year just on some hints about what the new models will or will not have. It will be a night and day difference, and since the base M4 starts with 16 Gb ram and 512 SSD (on the 14inch pro) it's a no brainer imo
@ thank you for that. Wow those are some amazing speeds. Most external SSD's don't even reach that's speed!! 🤩😱, Sorry I don't use twitter, especially since in the UK where a lot of fake news spread and it lead to riots… Boycotting it.
the Macs laptop the high-end ones are the best laptops on earth, even being that they have 2 big flaws 1) you can't use an external Nvidia GPU and 2) they are far from my shooting range, my budget for a laptop is usually 1800 to 2K, in the PC world in that range it is a paradise in value for a buck you get at the end, it is still just laptop after all, also my final point all people that i found praising the Mac high-end laptop, i mean 99 percent of them have a PC Desktop on the background which is funny and ironic.
Why though? If you are happy with Windows stick with it. In terms of productivity macs aren’t necessarily better. It really comes down to your choice of software. But since most of the software runs on both platforms these days there rarely is a reason to switch. Side note: I have both a PC with Win11/Linux and a MPB Pro. And I get my stuff done on both systems just fine.
@ thanks for the reply. The reason for asking is that I was looking to buy new ultrabook laptop (13/14”). All comparisons that youtubers do against MBP and MBA! I was like; what i am missing! I always feel that I reached a point where I don’t want to adapt to new OS unless if it is really worth it.
@ What makes the MBP and MBA are so good is their efficiency. So running on battery works really, really well. And they tend to be very silent which is also quite nice imho. Those are the reasons why I have a MBP. For desktop systems those things aren’t relevant and therefore people often go AMD/Intel because of the better price to performance ratio.
3:54 Am I the only one to notice over exposed video quality on M4 Max MacBook Pro compared to the M3 Max version? I mean just look at those white cupboards in the background!

Considering the RTX 5090 is just around the corner, the M4 Max is not too impressive. Looking at your Asus G16's crippled down 4080, I think we can expect a performance increase of at least 60% compared to the M4 Max. Of course, it will draw 150 watts, but just get a laptop with decent cooling. No need to go for an ultra thin marketing-driven design like on the Macbook Pro or Asus Zephyrus with shitty cooling.

Great review. I appreciate the time and effort you take to cover all of the specs and extensively test the performance of the laptops you review.
As a long time Windows user, it is time for me to make the switch to the M4 Pro. The MacBooks just offer incredible performance and even better battery life in a laptop form factor that Windows are still playing catch up to.
nano texture display and without nano texture display are both same except for reflections or is their a difference in brightness non nano texture display (like both have sustained 1000 nits).
I definitely see an improvement in webcam quality, audio can't say I hear much of a difference. both pretty good.
Does nanotexture make colors of movies or videos in specifically in dark scenes but in general too how does it look compared to glossy?
I heard that they switched to a new quantum dot screen so that the reds and everything are a bit more accurate in this monitor
They did! Also faster response time
I would have gotten the Macbook M4 Pro in a heartbeat if they had the 64GB option. What are your thoughts on the 48GB RAM on M4 Pro for photo and video editing, while using different plugins (e.g. Dehancer)?
Finally some worth upgrade from M1 Max.
Could you compare Macbook pro M4 14 inch to Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 12 or 13 ? Which one is better in terms of speed, reliability, battery, easy to use with most of available softwares, lifespan, price … etc ?
Thank You
Just ordered the M4 max 16 inch. You use crossover to run Windows software, right? Is that better than Parallels?
For gaming crossover makes more sense but if you want to run full windows and use arm apps in windows then you would need Parallels. Crossover doesnt install a full version of windows.
@ Thanks for the clarification. Wonder if I can install both or would it create issues. Crossover for gaming and Parallels for software.
Cyberpunk 2077 is finally getting native port
Yes, and if it runs that well under x86 emulation and several Windows API layers, imagine how fast it can run natively!
Is there a speed increase between the 16 inch and the 14 inch even with the same specs?
They are pretty much the same performance but 14" usually has higher thermals since its a smaller form factor
Can you post in the comments what's your results in WoW on m2 max / m3 max / and m4 max ? I got m2 max but considering switching to m3/4 max for bit more performance in WoW.
That's a beautiful laptop Matt, I'm envious. I can't justify upgrading from my M3 Pro MBP 14 though, chasing the next best thing isn't in my budget.
I wouldn't upgrade either = ) M3 Pro is still a monster. You're good for at least a few years.
for playing game mac pro is okay too?
i am thinking to buy mac pro 14 (12core cpu, 16core gpu, 16core neural engine, 24gb ram, 1tb ssd)
to use final cut or adobe and sometimes game (mac launching games)
Is it me or does including a polishing cloth with a matte panel, but not with the glossy panel make no sense at all? Just Apple things I guess.
The nano-texture is etched into the screen so it needs to be carefully wiped that's why the polishing cloth is included. Normal display can be wiped with much rougher material.
So where is the Space Black wireless extended keyboard? Wont buy the laptops until the keyboards are available!
Ugh that nanotexture screen looks like an always on Night Shift
Would you recommend a 14 inch M1 Max 32gb used or M4 Pro 24gb for Video Editing in Davinci and Premiere? Also using GPU heavy effects in these programms.
CPU will be slightly better with M4 Pro but M4 Max will have better GPU performance. Id probably still lean towards M3 Max 32GB
you got the review 1 day before the official release
I'm jumping from my 2019 Intel MBP to this exact spec M4 Max being delivered next Thursday. I'm thinking I'm gonna feel a little speed bump ;)
Should I avoid the 14 inch m4 max? I believe the 14 inch only has 1 fan which could be insufficient during heavy loads.
The cheapest 14" MacBook Pro has one fan, all the M4 Pro MacBook Pros have two fans. :)
16 inch has better thermals and more battery life than the 14 inch. I'm getting the 16 inch M4 max.
I got the binned 14' M4 Max from bestbuy with 32 cores rather than the 40. Would you say this is a good machine or would I be better off with a different variant?
I think you just bought an absolute monster of a laptop. What do you plan on using it for mostly?
Would recommend getting either the M4 Pro or binned M4 Max because the cooling will not be enough on the 14" for the full M4 Max. Good choice!
Ordered one. Kinda wondering if I should get the nano-teture display. Gonna have to head to the Apple Store to see in person to see.
Definitely go see it in person for yourself but I think on a laptop it makes sense. If this was a studio display id say skip it.
@ after seeing it in store, I’m canceling my order and getting the latte screen. Side by side you can barely tell the difference in color saturation, but the reduced glare is insane. I’m coming from 7 year old HP Spectre so it’s a big upgrade.
the webcam looks better on the old version lol
I just looked at it again. I disagree the new one has less noise
@@MatthewMoniz less noise = more blurry. I see more fine detail in the old version (thought it might be all software sharpening)
@@MatthewMoniz even your tshirt looked blacker on the M4 cam / screen
@@MatthewMoniz also less temporal noise reduction (noticeable with motion). Good improvement.
Can you test out WoW but get someone who actually plays the game to see raid performance?
LOL I used to be heavily addicted. As much as id love to jump in a raid I dont want to go down that rabbit hole again but I can promise you it runs beautifully.
@MatthewMoniz Yeah most YTs that test WoW just run around on a starter account that tells us nothing. Need some raid numbers to really see how a machine performs.
How is an m4 pro mini compiling firefox faster than an m4 max?
Im starting to think firefox is not the best tool to measure compile times. Im going to have to look into another benchmark for developers.
Why are there no autonomy tests ?
You can not buy it in space grey. It's only in "Space Black" now.
Webcams look identical
For gaming performance the 4080 was likely bottlenecked by the CPU on the ASUS, since resolution was only 1920x1200, otherwise I expect the 4080 would’ve pulled away further.
Help! 🙏🏼… I found the M3 MAX 🟡 (14 CPU, 36 GB RAM, 30 GPU) … at the same price as … the M4 PRO 🟣 (24 GB, 20 GPU, 14 CPU, which Mac should I buy? 😩
Considering that the CPU speed of the M4 Pro is a little bit better than the M3 Max.
Get the m3 max, just the extra ram is already worth it at the same price, and I don't think you will notice the performance diference
I wish the m4 pro supported more ram! I work with LLMs and want 64gb+
How is the performance running llama 405 b thanks
you can not get nano screen with pro series. MAX is the way to go
What about the performance between 64GB Ram and 128GB Ram? Is the difference significat when it comes to Photoshop/After Effects/Premier or Davinci?
It really depends on the workload but yes RAM can be a big diff in the results.
@@MatthewMoniz But if not doing movie-grade editing surely 64 should be enough?
Bro I have an M1 with a replaced battery that I won’t be upgrading from for a decade
Do you think there's a difference between the 14 and this, in the same specs?
Nope performance wise it will be similar. The only thing that will be different is screen size and slightly less battery life.
considering past results on M3 MAX, performance will be similar but the 14 will have trouble with heat management and fan noise at some point.
@@MatthewMoniz I see, thank you
@@r0main.895 I understand, thank you
Thermal performance will be better on the 16 because of the better cooling due to size
M3 max webcam looks alot better ngl
Would love to see WoW on a more demanding area like Ardenweald or Oribos. Is that with RT enabled, by the way? I am considering an M4 Max and that would be one of the drivers, funnily enough xD
Yes, everything is enabled. Highest setting. I'd love to show a raid or something but Im purposely trying to avoud playing WoW. haha Used to be super addicted in the early days.
@@MatthewMoniz haha I can relate... a raid would be ideal, but honestly just seeing how the FPS behaves in Oribos or any other complex areas of a recent expansion would be a pretty good indication... Orgrimmar is unfortunately already a bit too obsolete.
In any case, very helpful to have anything at all, as it's not a game people tend to test, so thank you!
You better be making paramount movies 🎥 with that laptop
Adult film
I don’t know which screen should i use ? Nano texture? Or standard?
I just use it indoors
money Is no problem
Im going to use it for coding
Please help?
No Nano if you are "most" of the time inside working on your machine.
The price tag is almost insane too
has basically the same single core speed as the M4/M4 Pro, the M4 Pro is a good sweet spot. So stupid though, that to upgrade to the smaller M4 Max to beef up your GPU, you drop DOWN to 36GB of RAM as the ONLY option. Tired of Apple gatekeeping like this so stupid
Hopefully you try World of Warcraft on MacBook Mini Base mode tomorrow 🙏🏻😁
I dont have the base model /= But it will be able to run it just fine as long as you drop the settings a bit. It ran fine on M3.
@ ah, okay! Thanks so much for your reply 🙏🏻
M4 is crazy good. To me the older webcam is better as it’s not resampling and cropping. Pointless “upgrade”
Can you performance test on
Unreal Engine,
Adobe Cloud Products…
Other 3D workflows- Maya, Nuke, and more
INSAME PREFORMANCE.. that means it can game yet?
This might be my first MBP purchase. Nice video!
Thanks! Let me know if you end up picking one up and how you like it
The camera of the M3 was almost always better imo
what's the internal SSD speed?
I posted it on Twitter but it’s 8300 read 5600 write
@ thank you for that. Wow those are some amazing speeds. Most external SSD's don't even reach that's speed!! 🤩😱, Sorry I don't use twitter, especially since in the UK where a lot of fake news spread and it lead to riots… Boycotting it.
the Macs laptop the high-end ones are the best laptops on earth, even being that they have 2 big flaws 1) you can't use an external Nvidia GPU and 2) they are far from my shooting range, my budget for a laptop is usually 1800 to 2K, in the PC world in that range it is a paradise in value for a buck you get at the end, it is still just laptop after all, also my final point all people that i found praising the Mac high-end laptop, i mean 99 percent of them have a PC Desktop on the background which is funny and ironic.
would love to see 4090 benchmarks in Adobe davinci blender tests.
4090 in blender would be almost double the scores. Around 4000 for the monster test.
Im getting the M5 max next year!
okay!
i will better wait for m5 or m6 to get the amoled display and dynamic island on a macbook
Being windows user, looking for reasons to move to mac other than design, battery & crazy performance. Productivity use.
Your Mini review gets it right but this MBP review forgoing a discussion of storage and RAM prices is fundamentally wrong!
3:54 Am I the only one to notice over exposed video quality on M4 Max MacBook Pro compared to the M3 Max version? I mean just look at those white cupboards in the background!
Thats not over exposed. I left true tone off on the M3 Max by accident since I was using it to edit videos.
With that price it better not have any flaws and last for 8 years
LOL i agree
it will and probably go for even longer if you’re not clumsy
no actual 3D work benchmarks this time, I wonder why?
the very category where macbooks were so unusable (and by all means still are if we are speaking about anything serious) but would be usefull to see how they imoroved it
I did benchmarks on 3D but I forgot to put the graph in the video. Hit me up on Twitter and ill post a screenshot of it for you.
Why does apple have such amazing webcam quality and yet the most expensive windows laptops dont -_-
There are some good webcams in windows laptops but I think Apple still excels in having the best microphones.
What’s better this or the new razor blade laptop with RTX 4090, 240Hz OLED, 2TB SSD ❓
Depends on what you need it for. RTX 4090 plugged into a wall will be faster
That is if you like Windows?
Still waiting for an OLED Macbook Pro, Apple...
This is the first video somewhat software reviews, mkbhd, dave 2d, just read the specs on the back of the box
