The 3rd Wave is a powerful new digital/analog hybrid wavetable synthesizer from Groove Synthesis which is heavily inspired by the PPG Wave 2.2 and 2.3 synthesizers from the 1980s. The 3rd Wave has 24 voices, 3 oscillators, 2 filters, 4 LFOs and 4 envelopes, a custom wavetable maker, sequencer, arpeggiator, 4-part multitimbrality, dual effects per part, mod matrix, and much more.
During a recent visit to California I had the opportunity to visit Groove Synthesis and interview Bob and Andrew about the 3rd Wave synth. I'm very thankful for their time and appreciate them sharing their knowledge about the synth with us.

A Platinum-era of Synth development and craftsmanship. What creative joy you bring to a suffering world, Bob et al… 🙏🏻
Yes, it is an incredible synth and achievement. Major kudos to Bob, Andrew and the entire Groove Synthesis team for bringing the 3rd Wave to life!
This is the deepest modern synth I've ever seen! Kudos to the thoughtfulness put into this machine.:)
Yes, it's very fully featured!
Amazing synth! I was lucky to pre-order one back in June, now waiting eagerly for the first batch to ship.
Awesome, you will enjoy it immensely! I believe they are shipping very soon!
Awesome stuff, very impressed. I didnt expect to like ot this much
Certainly an impressive instrument!
LOVE IT. I'm so very excited to get mine!!
I'm excited for you too! :)
Great content! Congrats on this development!❤
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the interview @synth4ever - great detail.
Thanks Johnny! It was a pleasure to visit and I'm very thankful to have had the opportunity to do this interview. The 3rd Wave is a beautiful synth.
LOVE the intro sound!!!!
Great video too!
Thank you Paula! 3rd Wave sounds amazing. Hope you are doing well these days!
I would love to own one of these as well as the OB-X8. Right now, those are my two dream poly synths.
Excellent work and props to the creators of the 3rd Wave!!!
Yes, they are both lovely synths!
I've been working with one for a couple months now... Best new synth in a decade IMO!
Awesome, congrats!
Amazing blue synth.
Yes indeed, amazing is the word!
Amazing , Synth ! 👍
The Prophet VS influence is most intriguing since I always thought that was one of the most unique beautiful pad producers I had ever owned. I sold it decades ago but it was one of those synths you remembered as a stand out for its uniqueness, it had the ghosting shimmer you talk about that you say in not aliasing but rather repeated imaging. Though this interview in now a year old I have listened to the many demos of your 3rd wave and like it very much. And appreciate the desktop module version recently released. Keeping the 3 sets of stereo outputs is appreciated. 3 synths on 3 stereo outputs for external processing. I enjoyed learning of your background and passion for synth development.
Amazing !!!
Yes!!!
Beautiful instrument
Absolutely
cannot wait for this beautiful blue beast to ship!
The excitement is palatable!
Very nice synth. 👍
Thanks, I agree. Fantastic synth!
The things I like about this are the non cramping filters and high internal sample rate.
Certainly very robust specs!
so much to like with what they've done, I'm getting very impatient waiting for mine
Wow..that is insane !
Agreed!
Nice amazing synth, waiting for eu distribution
Agreed, fantastic synth -- hopefully EU distribution will be forthcoming soon!
A very great pro unit.
Could this be the most personal synth ever conceived? The wavemaker not needing a computer but recorded in waves is amazing, and fast, and creative, and I'll bet surprising also from time to time. The wavetable (audio WAV) can be quickly tested and then make adjustments and then re-record an altered WAV to fine tune from the experience of the first WAV recording. All very fast with the wavemaker. The audio of the synth, though, recorded and played back in YT through my studio headphones is very impressive, and I think we are getting pro level preamps that won't need gain before recording, as well as impressive DACs. I can see myself making new, never heard before sounds on this synth 15 years from now....that is the most exciting yet....future proof, obsolete proof. TIMELESS.
Yes indeed! Very impressive specs, sound and near endless possibilities with the wavemaker! Look forward to hearing what people create with it!
Love this synth, but please give these guys proper microphones.
Was traveling for work and didn't have one on me. Next time!
Nice, if a little out of tune in one part, bit of Propaganda's The Murder of Love, from A Secret Wish, on that 4 part sequencer demo.
Jesus christ I didn't think I could possibly love this synth any more and it's got a Propanganda preset!?
What an amazing synth, just wow.
It is very futuristic!
This is one of the most interesting synthesizers I have ever seen! What is the projected price? Why can’t Roland or one of the other major companies come up with something this deep?
It is definitely very fully featured and deep. According to Groove Synthesis website, intro price is $3795 USD
Amazing, sometimes I wish I was a real musician to really appreciate a synth of this calibre.
PeaceFromOZ
😊
I bought the Waldorf Iridium keyboard a year ago and thought I had solved a big lump of gear lust………well it appears you guys have reaped me in again! Now I gotta start a new piggy bank project!
I don’t think I can avoid this expense!
It’s a fantastic piece of technology!
And it’s SO BEAUTIFUL!
So now I will own an iridium, pulse 2, and the third wave (not specifically Waldorf but certainly a close relative).
I can’t wait
The 3rd Wave is amazing, and the Iridium is also fantastic!
For the first few minutes I thought Andrew was a Placard........they make a perfect Penn & Teller.
Serious synth geek talk going on here. Love it.
Hehe... always great to talk shop about synths!
How would this instrument compare to a Korg Wavestate?
Wavestate does wave sequencing which crossfades samples. 3rd Wave does wavetable synthesis which interpolates samples. A more apt comparison would be to the Korg Modwave.
Like the fm
Yea, the FM sounds great!
Interesting, but why didn’t you give them a microphone? We are working with audio after all it should be common sense
I was traveling and didn't have a ton of equipment on me. Maybe next time!
Can be the USB connection used as Midi in out?
Hey, check out the specs here: www.groovesynthesis.com/3rdwave/
It says:
- MIDI In, MIDI Out, and MIDI Thru
- USB port for bidirectional MIDI communication
So it looks like MIDI in/out via USB is supported.
@@synth4ever ok …let me sell my Iridium…:)
Bob Coover! :)
I want one of these instruments so much.
Man I hope they send this to Loopop. Thing is out of left field for me but the pedigree is pretty defined. Great to watch!
It is a monster wavetable synth and looking forward to all the sounds people make with it!
Take my money!
:)
Korg Modwave!
What's in the next update? My prediction: GRANULAR ENGINE.
That would be pretty crazy if so!
East Coast meets West Coast in a
great package but on a higher level.
Indeed!
At 21:54 : Propaganda's spirit or is it me?... ;-)
Amazing.But again, the price...😮💨
Well, you know the saying... you get what you pay for. ;)
one of those videos where you try to skim through to the good parts but you just keep skimming constantly all the way through to the end
Make it 24 voice multitimbral.
Do you mean 24-part multitimbral?
@@synth4ever parts= voice= number of VCF's
@@deadmanwalking6342 Do you really need 24 parts of the same synth in one song? Also If you play 24 notes together you will get like 10ms latency before the first one and the last :) and you can expect some jitter issues.
Forget about MIDI CC and Clock if tightness important to you.
They will need to add at least another midi input (some synths have two midi inputs) And add 16 audio outputs (if you want different processing on each part)
You guys are next level synth genius’.
I own a Waldorf iridium keyboard currently. Would you think there’s too much crossover between iridium and 3rd Wave, or do they actually compliment each other?
I really do want a 3rd wave but it’s kinda expensive if it’s too much a duplication.
As for calling it “expensive” I for one think it’s A BARGAIN considering what you get. Same for iridium.
They have put themselves out of the reach of normal consumers into just semi pro or full pro....
Starting with a high price flagship product is a proven way to establish a new name, then it's very likely they will present a lower cost product maybe with less voices that everybody will want based on the success of the flagship ("the affordable 3rd wave")
Why talk and don’t plays?
Stay tuned for a sound only demo in near future.
I have 2 prophet vs’s, and a ppg 2.3. Nothing can touch them. They are 2 trick ponies, But what they do is just so amazing. The third wave sounds good, but is forgettable. The wave station didn’t age well, as well as the jd800. Stick with a Minimoog, Taurus pedals, Hammond b3, fender Rhodes, And Oberheim obx, obxa.
Sounds terrible and too much talk. Play some proper synth music.
It's an interview so there will be talking. If you just want to hear sounds, check out this demo: ruclips.net/video/2vxTpVmvEyM/видео.html
Lol clueless award of 2022 goes to you Paul.
