    For brown sugar, I bought some terra cotta "brown sugar bears" off Amazon that I keep in the container with mine. They work great and look cute. (I bought them for my family as small gift/stocking stuffers, too). You can also soften even the hardest "brick" of brown sugar by putting it in a container or ziploc with a slice of bread for a few hours or overnight.

      @lisam703 The Terra cotta things didn't work as well for me. I forgot about that bread trick! Thanks for sharing! ☺️

      @MakingMyAbodeOTR I can understand that, I didn't realize at first you do need to soak the sugar bear in water from time to time to keep it working and I have been known to forget about it when it's not baking season.

    Well, LeeAnne, I think you may have just saved my hubby’s sanity. We live in the remote Canadian Arctic and the brown sugar that we get from our grocery store here is already cement-esque! We have taken to buying it ONLY when we go south so it’s at least soft to start. Once it hardens over time here, my poor hubby will scrape off chunks and then put them in the blender until we have powder again. I will definitely purchase a large Mason jar, lid, and sealers to keep it fresh for us. We have tried everything else , so I am hopeful this time.
    We were gifted a couple of those clay thingies that you soak in water and it’s supposed to freshen up your brown sugar. The Arctic’s lack of humidity laughed at my little figures (I have a bear and a heart) and still turned my brown sugar to rock. My mother said the old Scottish gals in Cape Breton added a slice of bread. It turned the bread just slightly less hard as the sugar. I have even tried the old trick of just adding a bit of molasses to white sugar to make brown sugar. Don’t bother - it’s not true. LOL
    THANK YOU for sharing your tried and true method!!! We head out again in August, so I will buy new sugar and my mason jar and let you know how it goes. Hugz❣️❣️🇨🇦

    I recently revamped my 5th wheel pantry. I found some great spice racks and I love to use lazy-susan type bins. TJ Max is a great place to find good bins too. ❤LauraD

    I'm very organized as well (I live in 98 sq ft; I live in a self-converted mini school bus) and I'm also very frugal....rather than buying new plastic bins/storage containers/baskets, I go to the thrift store OR if I absolutely HAVE to have NEW, then I go to Dollarama.

    I love the way you've set things out. I personally have set my pantry up that the ingredients I use most are both grouped together but also close to where i use them. for example, my tea, coffee, etc. are close to where my kettle sits. my baking needs are grouped together close to my other baking needs, trays etc. and I have a whiteboard attached to the fridge to write anything that gets close to empty. most containers I use are all square or rectangular and I have a 1 or 2 cup mark which is my trigger point to rebuy. I also use a master list which covers the maximum capacity of containers so that I don't buy a 3kg bag flour or sugar when my containers only fit 2, but lists all of my foods in both the fridge, freezer and pantry. i am looking into a different method which utilises an app and bar scanner to help.

    Me again....to keep sugar from hardening up, put in a slice of bread....it's not a gimmick...I go through sugar very slowly and have had a slice of bread in my brown sugar for two years (maybe more 🙈).

    My pantry is weird. It’s really deep. I’ve struggled finding something/ anything that will make life easier. Currently, there’s 2 shelves about 17” tall each and 24” deep. It’s like a coat closet, but with a shelf in the middle. I’ve been using 2 bins on each shelf, but hate having to drag the front bin out every time to get to the back. There has to be a solution, wondering if the wooden shelves would work with a bin in front ? 🧐

    • @MakingMyAbodeOTR
      @MakingMyAbodeOTR  2 месяца назад

      @wallashakalla Have you thought about installing a track with a long drawer that pull out? I think that's what I would do!

    • @MakingMyAbodeOTR
      @MakingMyAbodeOTR  2 месяца назад

      @wallashakalla Depending on your dimensions the wood bin might work at least for the top shelf fir sure. You could just reach right back there.

    Your organization is great - saw someone else but some beer cozies in a couple of their glass bottles - that was great idea. I am switching to ti. containers for chips and stuff - so afraid of mice - 🐭
