- Jon is cracking slabs again! This time he has 9 cracked slabs and knows he got hit with a huge upcharge! Check out how some of the top grading companies compare to PSA in this crossover blind reveal!
Can't hate on you guys, your playing the game and you make good content. But holy crap, this video shows exactly why I never have, and never will purchase a PSA 10 of any card.
I hear you. PSA 10 could be a true 10 or a 9, maybe even an 8 with other companies. Just too dependent on the grader.
You'd rather buy a BGS 8.5 in decent condition for $8k than spend $360k on a PSA 10 with corner wear on two corners.
@@nothingbutcardboardMany BGS 8.5's are PSA 10's
@@DanielCordone9 sometimes. From my experience, SGC, CSG and HGA actually grade more strictly than BGS (from crossover results). In my opinion BGS is just about as strict as PSA
@@nothingbutcardboardyep that’s a fact
@nothingbutcardboard
Do you send your flips back to get deleted from the other companies?
You know you can take a picture and They will remove it from pop reports. This helps your resale value as well, especially for your low pop cards!
I have made tools to properly and safely remove the card from PSA, SGC, and Beckett Slabs. This may save you time and greatly reduce mistakes from cracking!
Sincerely,
TBBW🐺
Yep, there's so many PSA 10's with corner wear. They're just in it for the money. They even gave me 10's and upcharged me $300 per card. One had a stain and corner wear
Wow, a $300 upcharge is hefty! It must have been a banger to justify that hopefully.
@@nothingbutcardboard it's probably worth $2500 now. The others are worth about $900 each. They've dropped down in value significantly
@@DanielCordone9 $900 card in a 10 is $50 grading fee, not $300
@@sp123 This was in 2021. Sent about 315 cards in a bulk order. $9 each. They tried to rip me off with the upcharges, so I contacted them and provided evidence that the cards are not worth as much as they thought. They tried to get $4k out of me. Got them down to $3k, but it's all wrong. If you ask them to send the cards back ungraded without an upcharge, they crease your cards and return them
Well, he also said a 10 had a stain, so it all seems a tad fishy imo
You should send the Ichiro that got a 9 back, they could have put the 9 in the 10 case and 10 in the 9 case. Congrats 🎉
lol that would be something wouldn’t it! I actually already sold it, but I have some new Ichiro cards about to be sent
I have tons of old bgs 9’s tgat are 9.5,9,9,9.5 and i never knew about fingerprints when i graded cards
It boggles my mind why people pay so much more for PSA graded cards when i feel they are the easiest to grade with. I have subbed over 1000 cards to BGS, SGC & PSA over the past 15+ years and by far SGC grades the harshest then Beckett then PSA.
You legit cant even tell the difference from a PSA 9 to a 10. I have so many nice psa 9 cards that look like 10s and the only event site of wear i can see on them is if i take a 30x loupe a rear corner will have the slightest ding not even visible with the naked eye or a standard magnifying glass. The premium psa gets over other companies is just absurd and the difference in price from psa 9 to psa 10 is crazy when you cant even see the difference.
I would say 50%+ of psa 9 cards if cracked and regraded would get a 10. I love buying lower grade sgc cards and cracking them and submitting them to psa.
Last year i went 3/3 cracking SGC 8 Graded cards, yes 8s and getting 3 psa 10s. Also had dozens of sgc 9s and 9.5s that i cracked and i think my gem rate when grading them with psa was like 95%. Crazy times. But hey if people wanna keep wasting their money on psa 10s then ill keep doing it.
There is nothing wrong with psa 9s people and 9s from other company's.
That's interesting. Now that PSA has acquired SGC, do you think this changes anything for your approach? Will it make a difference?
13:59 That Gem Inc isn't a legit grading company! You got lucky!! I bought a Gem Inc 1990 Skybox Jordan 10 and sent to PSA and it got an 8.
Yeah I think I got lucky too. But I got the card for under raw value so it was worth taking a shot on.
What’s an up charge mean? They appraised the card at a higher value and charged you more?
Yes- PSAs tier/rates are bases on the resale value of the card after it is graded.
So if you send it at the $25 tier and that is good for a value up to $500. But the card graded higher- so the value was over $1500, so it jumped 2 tiers, and thus the up charge.
Which tools are you using to track your spend and calculate your proft or loss?
I keep an excel spreadsheet of all the cards I buy. Then I add the grading and sales info once I have it
I like you guys and you prove to the world PSA is where 9’s go to get a 10 label.
Thank you sir! It is definitely interesting to see the subjectivity of grading from one to another
UTA Mavericks. Great shirt. Daughter graduated from their with a Masters in Accounting.
Thanks! I got my Masters there as well. Great online programs
Just scored some psa burrows!!!
Love this video. How did you work on that one back corner you mentioned - is there something in the Kurt's kit that helped?
Hi Mike. Use use the corner tool from Kurt’s kit on the back. It’s basically a stick with a soft tube on the end lol. But that helps smooth corners out. Sometimes I will clamp the card between two pieces of acrylic to get it nice and flat.
Hey man, what are your thoughts about modern cards with a small dimple or pock mark if you will? No polish will be able to mask it and so it’s just going to have to be there. Do you still send it to PSA or do you know the result and therefore, don’t throw more money after bad?
If there is just one dimple it can still grade a PSA 10. We have sent a number of cards with dimples and they have gemmed. The rest of the card needs to be near perfect though.
@@nothingbutcardboard thanks for the quick response. I bet that’s got to be one of the most frustrating things when buying off of eBay, right? I believe I have done the best I absolutely can checking the card over looking at all the variables then I get it in the mail and notice the dimple. Is this a common occurrence you’ve dealt with more times than you want to admit?
@ericsorensen8242 dimples are fairly common. Unfortunately buying off eBay is a bit of a crap shoot. A lot of times it’s people dumping their cards that won’t grade out. It’s definitely possible to find gradable cards, but you never know what you’re gonna get
Is it just me, or did that Ichiro 10 have some L/R centering issues?
It was more up and down centering issues. PSA requires 60/40 for Gem mint. So it doesn’t have to be perfectly centered. This one definitely was not.
Lotsa haters out there on that GEM grading company, everyone says they have trimmed cards and to stay away from them. I've seen so many Jordan cards in those slabs I have been tempted to buy
Yeah I’ve heard the same thing. You can either get real lucky and it be an awesome card or it come back as a fake
So you used Kurt's card care on these cards?
Yes and MeGuiars on some of them.
@@nothingbutcardboard gotcha! Just curious because of all the Kurt's card care noise made this past week and all varying opinions. I've never heard of that stuff until recently, so was just curious. Congrats on that upcharge. This video would show a lot of people how strong SGC and CGC grading really is.
Kurt’s doesn’t really fix scratches. It mostly just gives the cards a nice shine and cleans them up. SGC and CSG much better grading than BGS in my opinion.
Awesome job
Thank you!
Yo voy a enviar a psa un 9.5 beckett del cromo de messi 71 bis de año 2004 ,,,,,,,pero viendo estos videos tengo muchas dudas
It is scary. We have had better results with SGC and HGA, really depends on the sub grades. Couple things to think about- eye appeal plays a big role in the grade: which means they are usually harsher on the front of the card.( Centering is a huge factor in eye appeal.)
They do have a crossover service- where you send them the slabbed card and they will only crack and re-grade if it meets your minimum grade required. We have never tried this- it cost more money than just getting a card graded, and we think companies may be a little biased when it comes to “ grading standards/competition”. ( PSA may think they grade better and will be harder on other companies slabs.)
Lets us know how it goes and what you decide to do.
Lotta haters in the comments already but way to crush it! Huge congrats on the ichiro!
Thank you sir!
I heard gem mint company trims a lot of there cards
Wow that disrespect on my man Cade. He was (is?) leading the NBA in 3 pt percentage with high volume post ASB.
lol please disregard my complete lack of NBA knowledge
PSA graders spend 30-45 seconds a card. They don't have time to check logs, check for resubmissions, or look for substances on the card.
Good point. Thanks for the comment
Yep, Meguairs used on these I think we can assume
@@gradedcards5516 if they needed it yes. But I only apply Kurt’s if the surface looks good.
AFTER 50+ cards with BGS and most of them pack fresh not one got a 10 unfortunate I now half to play the PSA game I can tell u that BGS is way more critical of every aspect of the card attributes if u ask me a little overboard!!!!!!!
You are right, they almost never give out 10s. However, I have had very little luck crossing BGS 9s and 9.5’s over to PSA. SGC and HGA have provided the best results.
You got a good grader
I definitely was not complaining after I saw the grades lol
Im send in sgc 9.5s and 10ss sgc to psa!
Do it! Let us know how it goes
Nice video
Thank you!
I don't get the hate on using MeGuires to polish a card. It clearly removes grim, stains and removes light scuffs. The card is still the same card. It's like someone telling me you can't polish a car before selling it because you are cheating the buyer. Ridiculous.
Agreed
What meguires product specifically? Wax? Polishing compound? Detail spray?
@@pk3739 Meguiar’s ScratchX
@@pk3739 ultimate compound
How many PSA 10’s will start to discolor in 5 or 10 years because the flippers were rubbing card juice all over them.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but if it’s a wax that is used, it would be a protective layer if anything. Car wax does not change the color of your car, but rather protects it from UV light.
@@nothingbutcardboardTrue, but your car isn’t sealed in plastic either. Not attacking you guys just a general concern as cleaning is the hot new thing in the hobby.
Valid point and a valid concern. I would lean towards the side that it wouldn’t affect coloring, but again I am just speculating.
ZERO as i have been doing it for nearly 2 decades before anyone even knew what it was. I have cards i sent in to get graded in 2005 that are still perfect til this day. Also, no serious person that knows what they are doing and have been doing it a long time is actually using car wax lol and we aint using kurts card care either, its overpriced and the product i have been using for 2 decades works better and costs 80% less. I have also worked in 3 card shops since the early 90s and all the owners and big dealers would do it as well. Has been going on since the late 90s at least and i got all my tips from the old timers back then and it still works fine. Just have to know what you are doing.
@@TheRealAssistMan what are you using if you don’t mind me asking?
Graders spend 45 seconds per card, they aren't "checking" for anything...

Appreciate your video but that ichiro is nowhere near a 10…shows the grossness of grading!
Surface, corners, and edges were good. Just the centering was off. Surprised me as well though
They don't check serial numbering for these little cards man. They'd be losing money doing so.
Agreed
@@nothingbutcardboard people over think it sometimes. These guys got maybe 60s a card if that. They miss things. If it has a chance, send it on over to Please Submit Again!
Csg bumped way up
Green label CSG was harshly graded in my opinion. They usually resub pretty well.
Great bumps but I gotta admit i hate all these cards with a passion. 90s inserts for the win.
Damn altering cards is profitable lol borderline fraud but also shows how inconsistent grading companies are and just a money grab. I think just like baseball with the automated strike system grading should just be automated.
That’s kind of what HGA was trying to do, but unfortunately there was still some inconsistency with that as well. As far as the ethics go, everyone has their own opinion, but it is definitely a gray area in the hobby. Some don’t consider it altering and others do.
Wow, some guy has just snitched on you in one of his videos. Not good.
What do you mean?
I use SGC exclusively and I have to say this video is really frustrating to see. Clearly both your SGC’s bumped up and yet the SGC slab sells for like 70% of a PSA slab. WTF??
Yeah doesn’t necessarily make sense. PSA is king of resale. Although who knows what will happen now that PSA owns SGC.
@@nothingbutcardboard Yes I was wondering the same - if being a PSA-owned product will give SGC's slabs more cred/value...
@@brendanbullock9468 very possibly. But who knows. Some people just like collecting PSA and like the look of the slab as opposed to the tuxedo.
@@nothingbutcardboard I think the black slab highlights pretty much any card better and doesn't clash with a card the way that PSA's red and white does.
@@brendanbullock9468 yeah I think they look pretty slick especially with certain cards. But all a matter of preference.
lol. PSA is the most USED grading company…not the BEST grading company.
PSA can be inconsistent because of how many graders they have and cards that are being graded. So I agree that there are definitely other companies that are probably a little more consistent. However, from a resale perspective, PSA is king.
Do you sheep actually factor in the upcharge when selling? Its so dumb seriously you guys support such a corrupt company
Yes little lamb, you have to factor in an upcharge when you sell.
Nice turnovers!!!
Thank you!
Grading is a joke.
Sam Howell is horrible. He’s the next Mac Jones.
Except that he was a 5th round pick and not a first round pick. He had flashes where he was playing well
@@nothingbutcardboard I can agree on that because I’m an Eagles fan and he played super good against us but I just don’t think his cards are going to pan out to be of any value
@scentualobsessions probably not. He would have to take the job from Geno and play lights out for the seahawks
obnoxious thumbnail
lol you think so?
