Something Jimmy did and I personally did in my own deck is I messed around with some of the explore cards. Merfolk Branchwalker and Path of Discovery. Giving free counters or land draws always felt good in this deck. And slyvan scrying to make sure I got reliquary tower early.
I know voltron is not the strongest path with Kumena, but I need to be able to 21 someone saying "Murmaider, Murmaider, Murmaider, Murmaider..." to be able to say that my MTG experience is truly fulfilling. \m/
I did the same thing with the merfolk deck from merfolk vs goblins and took it and the merfolk from one the more recent commander decks that had merfolk in them. This is why I love prebuilt mtg decks wether it's a intro deck, commander deck or vs deck or what ever the case I love taking them and building them into something better while still using the the base of what the deck is supposed to do.

As you were listing off the cards I was like "yes, got it....yes, got it, etc." Your deck list is like 90% the same as mine. ;) good job breaking it down. Also, I like the include of cauldron.
I really like that you and I evaulate and build in similar ways. I found some great synergy between merrow reejery and kindred discovery. Untapping lands drawing cards feels great. Also i think retreat to coralhelm is an over looked gem. Untapping is obviously good, but so is scrying when you're getting flooded. Also nice to crack a fetch and tap down a threat. Goes amazingly well with harvest season... Tap all your merfs, put lands in, untap them all. Feels good. and speaking of good I enjoyed this video so keep it up my man
love the vid, another sneaky way to win, is if you have a lord of atlantis or master of pearl trident, you can slam down a stormtide leviathan. Literally give your board islandwalk, lock anyone out that cant get through their flooded lands, then smack em with fish army
I had Throne of the God Pharaoh in Kumena initially and very quickly removed it from the deck. Even running all the untap every turn effects (except Seedborn Muse) I just found I wasn't untapping my creatures on opponents turns often enough to justify leaving all my merfolk tapped at the end of my turn for a little extra damage. Also, similarly to Swift Warden, I really like Vodalian Illusionist for single-target protection, plus with the up-side of being able to do things like phasing out another player's commander denying them access for a round.
Kinda sad how they chose to discontinue the duel decks. Inspired me to make both Goblin and Merfolk EDH decks. The value (Krenko, Merrow Reejery, etc) is insane. I'll miss duel decks because I love breaking them down.
I have been messing around with Kumena for a little bit. I've been a UG merfolk player isnce Thrasios. I ended up putting the 5 swords in the deck with True-Name for some extra value. Alongside Craterhoof, Pathbreaker, and Thunderfoot Baloth. One thing I'd like to note, don't underestimate Kumena's draw ability. A Cryptbreaker in the command zone is super powerful. I ended up cutting a lot of my big draw spells in favor of smaller cantrips to fix my draws.
I think one of the best synergies with the Islandwalk strategy is Stormtide Leviathan, provides an easy way through with all your Islandwalk Merfolk and hurts the opponents ability to attack.
How about Intruder Alarm and Presence of Gond? In my tests it allows me to buy my entire deck, play everything (if you have Cryptolith rite) and assuring my victory. I'm really loving Kumena's deck.
This might be one of your best videos when you talk about how zendikar resurgent may not belong here. I see people run good cards in decks that don't want that card or can't use the card all the time. I try to tell people that "staples" don't always go in every deck but it can be tough to get this through to them....
I'm glad you liked that. This deck tech really didn't cover much new territory. At first, I felt like it was boring but I realized that it didn't have to be really unique if I just share some theory behind why certain cards work.
Question about character interaction here: when cards say "merfolk you control get +1/+1", do those count as counters? because its not adding a counter like Kumena's ability, they just get that from being a merfolk

On the budget merfolk video, I commented about building a Zur merfolk tribal deck. I put the deck together and played it against my friend's Kumena deck leading to one of the jankiest wins in my commander career. On my side of the board is Zur plus a couple of 1/1's. My opponent has just swung with all his creatures and is positioned to KO me next turn. Unbeknownst to him, I have Mirrorweave in my hand. I turn all my creature sideways and cast Mirrorweave, targeting the Wanderwine Prophets that he just happened to have on the battlefield. The inclusions of Mirrorweave and Mirror Entity are what really drive me towards having white in the deck. I'm waiting for the day when I can Mirrorweave a Lord of Atlantis and make the board a mathematical nightmare.
Zendikar Resurgent is great because it easily lets you rebuild your board. You got boardwiped? "I'll tap a land cast a merfolk and draw a card. I drew a merfolk so I do the same again. Then I'll recast my commander and now I have three merfolk and I'll draw another card before my next turn." I could easily go like that.
metalsabatico Dont worry. Add a somerwald sage, as you will add merrow reejerey anyways (also works with Nyktos shrine of nyx, any 2+ manarock and cost reduction) and proceed to have a merfolk mini paradox engine.
Literally 4c merfolk was my original idea. However after playtesting it does not work well. We dont have the synergy there with the cards. Sadly. However Kumena at the helm and your 99 focus on unblockable and athem affects with a bunch of draw power engines. You are asking for a tier 1. deck cost about 600 USD.
When standard overlaps with EDH we have to pay for time. We all know that these cards will bottom out at rotation but if I wanna play I'm going to have to wade through standard fiances.
Thanks for the deck tech! I opened Kumena from my reward packs from the pre-release and have started to build a deck around him. This video certainly gave me some ideas to pick from. How do you feel about putting Deepchannel Mentor or Craterhoof Behemoth in the deck? Craterhoof has won me too many games to count. I feel he would be a good addition to the deck, even if he's not a merfolk. Also, would Arcane Adaptation be too much of a do-nothing card for the deck? I'm trying it out right now but haven't had a chance to play it too often. I also currently run Coat of Arms because not many people in my group play tribal, but I have not had a chance to play it yet. Thanks again :)
I'm currently made a kumena EDH deck and yes it would be good with the many new cards to come out with the ravnica sets like simic ascendancy, deeproot waters, frilled mystic and more I also took apart a atraxa pre con to add more cards to focus on +1/+1 unblockable Merfolk I also use kiora crashing wave with many cards that just double counters to get instant emblem and star pumping out 9/9 krakens. Doubling season is a great card for this

Load it up with Azorius flavor cards: Supreme Verdict, Azorius Charm, Render Silent, Lavinia, etc. Supplement with additional law and order themed cards like Authority of the Consuls just so we don’t get desperate and play anything with an Azorius watermark
It is unlikely that opposition can win you a game if you become focused. This card is very political and shutting down the best creature of each opponent is not the way to do it. I would focus on doing favors and disrupting a single player.
Can't run the classic persist cards unless you run Xenograft or Arcane Adaptation...play one or the other name merfolk and bam....your persist guys are now merfolk
This might be the first convincing argument I've seen for running Arcane Adaptation. I guess the only downside is you have to actually pull it to get all the benefit.
Hey to be fair, I run either of those or Conspiracy when I'm running a tribal deck, cards that aren't supported by the tribe but would be amazing if they were... Conspiracy = Replaces creature types in play, hand, deck, and grave with chosen creature type Xenograft = Adds chosen creature type to creatures in play Arcane Adaptation = Adds chosen creature type to creatures in play, hand, deck, and grave like for example, (Using my Ally deck for the following examples) Turntimber Ranger with its wolf tokens when an ally enters the battlefield, one of those 3 cards added into the mix and bam, infinite ally/wolf tokens... Restoration Angel + Panharmonicon + General Tazeri? Play Conspiracy and bam, infinite ally tutors.... Need to get those good non-ally combo creatures? Play Arcane Adaptation and then play General Tazari and bam you can now tutor for ANY of your creatures unfortunately Arcane Adaptation and Xenograft can't get the same explosive effects as Conspiracy, but they can fill in the roles if the deck runs blue and not black
Besides, Who wouldn't want a Dragon Lair Spider that makes 1/1 Green Ally tokens when an opponent cast a spell? Or a Brago who can trigger any ally? Or one of my favorites, Endrik Sahr making 1/1 black Ally tokens that use to be Thrulls?
Problem I see with running those to ensure a tribal theme is that the two cards have to see each other, and with the lack of tutors for enchantments in these colors, its unlikely.
I actually Liked merfolk, nur now everyone is hyped for IT in Every Format and IT annoys me so hard that even RUclipsrs Push For that so hard. Just stupid merfolk now
Tishana is great in the 99. You have to have the team out already to get the most out of her, while Kumena only requires you to have 2 other merfolk out before his draw engine can start.

Harvest Season is nice for late game deck thinning so the rest of your draws for the game are probably gas.
It also must be so satisfying to cast that for 10 lands
I’ve also found that in my play group having lots of mana to throw a crap load of gas out ALL AT ONCE is how you win mostly.
I'm not a big fan of the card, but at least Merfolks won't have to restort to Derevi now.

Paradox Engine was so good in this deck before it got banned. But Intruder Alarm is also a good replacement.
