Is God real?
신이 정말 있을까?
It's a fair question
그건 타당한 질문이야.
God or the concept of a God is talked about a lot,
신이나 신의 개념은 정말 많이 이야기되고 있어.
but we don't see God and we don't hear him
하지만 우리는 신을 볼 수도 없고 들을 수도 없지.
So can we really be sure that there is one
그래서 정말 신이 있다고 확신할 수 있을까?
and, you know, sometimes we can get really curious about God's existence
그리고 있잖아, 가끔은 신이 존재하는지 정말 궁금해질 때가 있어.
especially when it comes to thoughts about death
특히 죽음에 대해 생각할 때 말이야.
Like, if there's a God, and if there's a Heaven and Hell,
만약 신이 있고, 천국과 지옥이 있다면,
where would we go?
우리는 어디로 가게 될까?
Many of my students have asked me,
내 학생들 중 많은 애들이 나한테 물어봤어,
how do you know God is real?
신이 진짜 있다는 걸 어떻게 아느냐고?
And I normally respond with three thoughts
그래서 난 보통 세 가지 생각으로 대답해줘.
Thought number one, you don't need to see in order to believe
첫 번째는, 믿기 위해서 꼭 볼 필요는 없다는 거야.
Now, suppose we went to an art museum,
자, 우리가 미술관에 갔다고 생각해 봐,
and imagine us seeing a painting of a beautiful landscape
그리고 아름다운 풍경화를 보고 있다고 상상해 보자.
and you told me,
그러면 네가 내게 이렇게 말했어,
wow, that artist is good
와, 저 화가 정말 대단하다.
and I look to you and say, well, you can't be too sure there's an artist
그러면 내가 너한테 말했어, 음, 화가가 있다고 너무 확신하지는 마.
I mean, can you see the artist give me direct evidence that there was an artist?
내 말은, 화가를 봤거나 화가가 있었다는 직접적인 증거를 줄 수 있어?
And as you look to find the artist's name on the painting,
그리고 네가 그림에서 화가의 이름을 찾으려고 할 때,
you find that the artist is unknown
그 화가가 누군지 모른다는 걸 알게 됐어.
to which I'd say see you can't see the artist
그러면 내가 이렇게 말할 거야, 봐, 너는 화가를 볼 수 없잖아.
There's no proof that they actually existed
실제로 그들이 존재했다는 증거도 없고.
Therefore this painting doesn't have an artist
그러니까 이 그림에는 화가가 없다는 거지.
and this obviously is an illustration
그리고 이건 분명히 하나의 예시야.
You see from what I found
내가 알게 된 건 말이야,
People always believed in what they don't see
사람들은 항상 보이지 않는 것들을 믿어왔어.
yet Many people don't like to use that logic
근데 많은 사람들이 그런 논리는 쓰고 싶어하지 않아.
when it comes to the subject of God
신이라는 주제가 나오면 말이야.
We as people Must also have a Creator
우리 인간도 창조주가 있어야만 해.
due to how complicated our bodies are
우리 몸이 얼마나 복잡한지를 보면 말이야.
to further my point
내 의견을 좀 더 설명하자면,
Imagine if we were walking in a forest
우리가 숲을 걷고 있다고 상상해 봐.
and we see a laptop lying on the ground and I looked to you and say,
그리고 땅에 노트북이 놓여있는 걸 보고 내가 너한테 말했어,
do you know how this laptop got here?
이 노트북이 여기 어떻게 있게 됐는지 알아?
Well, this Forest had all the elements needed in order to create a laptop
음, 이 숲에는 노트북을 만드는 데 필요한 모든 요소가 다 있었어.
So after billions of years, full of lightning storms and the changing environment,
그래서 수십억 년 동안의 번개 폭풍과 환경 변화를 거치면서,
this laptop came into exist
이 노트북이 생겨난 거야.
And while this all sounds silly
이게 다 말도 안 되게 들리겠지만,
take out the laptop
노트북을 빼고
and insert the evolution of humans in there I mean is it possible that humans somehow
거기에 인간의 진화를 넣어봐. 내 말은, 인간이 어떻게든
could have evolved after billions of years?
수십억 년 후에 진화했을 수 있다고 생각해?
And might I add that if that scenario sounds unlikely with the laptop?
그리고 내가 덧붙이자면, 그 시나리오가 노트북에 대해서는 말이 안 된다고 생각한다면?
How can that make sense with people
그게 어떻게 사람한테는 말이 되겠어,
who are significantly more advanced?
훨씬 더 복잡한 존재인 사람한테 말이야?
