      Some languages use multiple letters/characters for the same sound.
      Japanese used to have many kana for the same sounds, but the system was simplified to a 1:1 ratio. (Technically 2:1 because there are two kana systems).
      A modern example of multiple letters for the same sound is Thai, very interesting to look at.
      Maybe Inkling language works like the Thai language. Certain letters are used in certain words for some certain reason.
      We do this a little bit in English (like "cell" vs. "sell") but I think Inkling works like Thai.
      In Thai, the pitch you pronounce a word with affects the meaning, usually making it a completely different word.
      For example, ค้า (khah) is pronounced with a high pitch and means "to trade".
      Compare it to ขา (khah) which sounds the same but has a low-to-high rising pitch and means "leg".
      The first letter in these words is different but they have the same sound. The difference is the tone.
      Listening to inkling sound clips, you can hear that the pitch in their speech varies more than you would normally hear in a sentence, so it's very likely that the Inkling language is a tonal language like Thai.
      This may be the reason for the various letters!

    If inklings owning their weapons are actually not expensed in the upkeep of their weapons and especially if G earned from simple Turf Wars has actual spending power (which strongly appears to be the case according to Sheldon, who needs the G spent on his weapons to rent the space for his shops and research), it may very well be all run by the Jellyfish hive mind.
    It all kind of makes sense; if an overly successful Jellyfish hive mind were to keep Inklings around as more or less unthinking guard dogs for its booming city state, then sustaining the inkling population during times of peace by incentivizing non-lethal sports based around highly competitive objective-based combat would be an incredibly effective way to keep the inkling population placated and battle-hardened simultaneously.
    It could also very well explain why Agent 3 an Agent 4 can so easily mow through the Octarian army which does not have this same luxury at their disposal (and potentially an in-lore explanation why Agent 8's journey is significantly harder by comparison).

    • @nickh.4940
      @nickh.4940 2 года назад +37

      Here's the way my head-canon sees it.
      The Inkling civilization is likely a Socialist Democracy. Now, to clear up any potential confusion, the reason they are not communist is because, while the two systems sound similar on paper, communism creates an "equal society" through authoritarian methods, while socialism still has the values of a democracy. And of course, it's obvious the Inklings do not live under a dictatorship (that's the octarians), and there are rich people like Pearl, which would be essentially impossible in a communist government. So I'm going with the conclusion that they are most likely a Socialist Democracy.
      In America, there's a lot of controversy of what socialism actually is, but people in European countries will understand.
      As for who runs their government, since it's a democracy, I imagine it's most likely either a President or Prime Minister along with a Senate to keep the leader in check and represent the individual states like Splatsville, Inkopolis, Calimari County, etc.
      I also imagine the most likely have a two-party system as evident of the splatfest teams always having two sides. However, I doubt their system was ever corrupted by greedy politicians as bad as the human world. There would likely be far less greedy politicians because, again, wealth is not a big part of their status, so the politicians would have no reason to be greedy. It could also be that inklings have a stronger sense of community than humans, allowing them to care for one another more, and not straight up hate each other because of their political beliefs. As a result, they are not as divided, so there two party system works.
      And that's my take on the topic.

      LMFAO! Idk why this made me laugh so hard! Lol
      Funny thing is, It's possible Judd actually help out in creating the Inkling's system. Since Judd was put into a cryogenic state for 10,000 years by his previous owner. When he awoke, he practically became immortal, since he's still alive 2,000 years later (Splatoon takes place 12,000 years after Humanity's Extinction). So, maybe he somehow knew of the communist system, and warned the Inklings to never use that system.
      I mean, we don't know where Judd's previous owner came from. For all we know, his owner could have been a Russian scientist Personally, I don't think he was from the Western world (like the USA), since Splatoon most likely takes place in what was once Japan, so if he was in North America, the Inklings wouldn't likely find him until much later in their history. Evidence being that you can see Judd on a sarcophagus in Shellendorf Institute, suggesting that he's been around during the early years of Inkling civilization. So, I'm leaning towards the Russian idea.
      In case you're wondering about the cold being a barrier to his discovery, I think by this point in time (I mean come on, it's been 12,000 years), global warming made Russia's climate become warmer, allowing Inklings to go there in their primitive stage.

    Can you do a vid about ruins of ark Polaris? Supposedly it was created by humans before they all went extinct but nothing about it to me seems particularly old though, none of the metal is rusted including the rockets ship in the water. It’s all kinda leading me to theorize that the total extinction of humans may have been a much more recent event then we may have theorized. I just find it really strange when comparing this stage to the Eiffel Tower in Splatoon 3. Especially for things that have likely been submerged in water for a long time- you would think they would be much more rusted and damaged.

  • @nickh.4940
    @nickh.4940 3 года назад +7

    I like your interpretation of the Splatoon economy. It's kind of how I would imagine it, but I was never able to properly visualize it in my head until now. Here's some additional info that could be helpful for this head-canon:
    When it comes to the economic states of the Inklings and Octarians, I like to compare the Inklings as a first world country and the Octarians as a third world (duh).
    The Inklings are basically a combination of Japanese civilization (like Tokyo, Japan) and American street fashion. This is plausible since Inkopolis is located in what was once Japan or Eastern China. It is obvious that they are a first world country given their economic state. I'm sure the skate/punk theme is intentional by them, so I doubt poverty is that high at all. And for those who are in poverty, they have systems similar to European countries in which the poor would still get essential things like healthcare, education, shelter, and potential financial help if they can't afford it. Due to Inklings donating a lot of their money, this system could be funded relatively easily. I also I imagine their tax system is fairly balanced in which the richer you are, the more you pay in tax. There would be fewer loopholes to get around this compared to something like the American tax system. It wouldn't be like the United States in which the poor are essentially cast aside and ignored compared to the rest of the classes. I imagine people like Spike are still homeless because they choose not to get proper help because they're stubborn. Before I move on to the Octarians, I might as well also mention that it's most likely that the Inklings' government system is a Socialist Democracy. Now some Americans may see this as a bad thing, but many European countries will understand why this is a good thing. There's also the possibility that capitalism is not as rampant in their world since being rich is less of a priority in your status (evident by inklings donating their money so much).
    By the way, do NOT turn this into a political argument! If you hate socialism, whatever, keep it to yourself. This is just a little head-canon theory on how the Inkling World works. Anyway...
    As for the Octarians, I think it's clear that their financial state is that of a third world country, but they are also a militarized dictatorship. Now does it sound familiar to you? Oh yeah, this is basically North Korea. DJ Octavio is clearly a dictator even though he labeled himself a king (then again, a dictator is basically an oppressive king). Also, have you ever noticed that you never see male Octoling solders? I imagine this is because the women, that are likely biologically superior for combat (this info is from a Theory video I saw). This is the same for Inklings, but gender issues are non-existent for them, so males are treated just fine. Octoling women are drafted into military service while the males would work as factory workers and medical personnel. It's like the gender roles from our old wars like WWII with men being soldiers and women being nurses, but gender-reversed. So, the octarians have a strong military, but that's all DJ Octavio cares about since he's hell-bent on Revenge for losing the Great Turf War. As a result, he neglects things like good living conditions for his people, and only provides the bare minimum for them to become soldiers.
    Also, the Salmonids may have weaponry, but I doubt they have a functioning civilization, as they're essentially barbarians. Then again, we don't know enough about the Salmonids to tell for sure, as we've never seen what their leader looks like, if they have one at all. So for now, I imagine they are kind of like a civil anarchy.
    But yeah, that's what I got. What do you think?

    I think splatoon is a very privatized society. It seems that the government takes a very hands off approach, and the fact that they rely more on donations than taxes furthers this conclusion. The aesthetic of the game also really makes me think of the Reagan era. I think they are kinda alluding to the 80s, which was quite an iconic time for free market-ism in places such as America and the UK. You don’t really get much info about the government. There also seems to be a sense of nationalism and pride present, as long as an embrace of their past and more focus on the good sides from mainstream inkopolis culture, which implies a more right wing approach, though maybe in other countries that is not the case. As you stated, inkopolis definitely has a consumerist focus. Of course, I do not have the art books, so there is probably a lot of info I am missing out on. I also do not know as much about Japanese culture during the 80s as I do with America, and the reasoning behind this comment is rather america centric. There are probably a few flaws in my logic because of this, and I always love to learn more about different cultures.

      i like your thoughts!! i'm not extremely well versed in economics honestly, so i didnt wanna go too in-depth with the real-world comparisons in the video. I have always imagined inkopolis citizens are better off than us modern day americans economically speaking. If it helps, i can add that the 1980s, Japan was also going through a huge economic boom, 2nd largest after the US.
      i wouldnt say your missing stuff from artbooks, because we really know close to nothing about their government. i believe inkopolis is supposed to somewhat mirror modern day japan in terms of culture, and a slight right wing approach would line up with that. Inkopolis Inklings largely don't seem to be very politically involved, which is similar to many of the japanese youth of today (i dont wanna come across as disparaging, but that's what i gathered from living in japan). they didn't give a shit about the Zapfish going missing, they dont question the ethics of Grizzco, and there's some history erasure going on because theyre unaware of octolings.

    G is tokens that the local shops consider when selling to kids-teens. Or just turfers in general. Like fake money given by schools or games being used in other places. So a company that employees children giving G would for a job that resembles turf might be a co-sponsor to turf wars which could be the reason why they give G or offer kids jobs as part of a co-program with other investors of the turf war games.

    I think your theory for there being an alternate currency to G is very plausible. If you win a 100x battle and earn just 100 G (since 100 is written on thr check) then you really haven't earned anything in comparison to what you normally earn in turf war. If your theory is correct, I think that the bills in the off the hook illustration could be units of that other currency, since their units seem to have different values. The bills seem to be worth more since fewer bills can cover expenses that would cost more in G.

    I know I'm late but here are my personal thoughts on this, first of all I personally don't think they earn money from battles and if they do I feel like it's either them earning a bit of cash by giving other species like jellyfish entertainment but still it wouldn't be enough to live off of and if we're putting the manga into account any of the teams have ever fought in the manga have never earned any money from battles and it's also implied that multiple characters including Rider and emperor have or are working part-time jobs as for the money and I feel like the money is supposed to mimic yen in Japan, if we're assuming inkopolis is in Japan, and I feel like the other signs of money from the checks for the slapfest to the prices and mako Mart are just inconsistencies like the side Splatoon society rides on the freeway with cars because I don't feel like the developers really care much or think anyone will acknowledge the money they use as for the universal thing we are going to have to wait until Splatoon 3 if that's how it works

  • @pandasinspace3560

    My two cents here
    It could just be a simplified notation/version of the currency. The decimal system is used for real world prices intended for adult inklings and the simplified yen style notation is used for the younger inklings in the turf war zones.
    Also it makes more sense for gear meant for a teens/squid kid's hobby to cost 100s of dollars (10,000 g) not 10,000s of dollars

    I do want to point out that while the initial octarian energy crisis may be partially the inklings fault, we've progressed past that now and it's become clear that if Octavio wasn't so prideful, he probably could have asked for help. Nothing about Inkling culture portrays them as spiteful or cruel, and I'm sure if they were told about an entire species of people suffering an energy crisis, very few Inklings would be against helping them. Also, given how advanced Octarian tech is and the fact that they have enough eggs to power it, their energy crisis would be far less pressing if Octavio wasn't so hard focused on their military endeavors.

    It would be cool to live in the octo domes
    Also I feel like the octo domes in splatoon 2 and the octos are no longer going through the energy crises and I say this because in splatoon 2 the octodomes do seem much more better looking then splatoon 1 and like the octarians and the salmon trade and the octarians get power eggs from the salmon,and power eggs can be use for power so the octarians are problem using the power eggs to power there domes meaning they need to kidnap zapfish no more to power there domes. And the domes are problem not falling a part no more seeing as there citys in them which means there doing fine for the most part.

    • @rassicas
      @rassicas  3 года назад +3

      The salmonid/octarian trade has been going on since at least the first game, so the eggs probably dont provide enough power or the right kind of power to keep the domes running. also the kidnapping of the great zapfish also happened in splatoon 2, i still dont think things are fine and dandy down there.

    One thing I don't get is why Inklings don't use renewable energy sources like Solar, Tidal, Hydroelectric, Biofuel, Geothermal and Wind power? they seem to rely on the Zapfish and power eggs from the Salmonids. Which is weird, if Inkling society is supposed to mirror aspects of our own... Why don't they do this?

    • @rassicas

      they do have solar and wind power for sure. it might just be a similar case as our society: the tech is ready to go, it just hasnt been as widespread as it should because of greed. that or power egg fuel does something that other kinds of energy cant.

    You forgot I've currency! What about the Credits system the Deep Sea Metro uses? Now, it could be a closed system, like loading a bus pass with rides, but I feel like it could be a currency all of ours own! If Agent 8 ever ruined out of credits, Pearl says that since her family is rich she can loan you credits. Now, it's well established that the DSM is not only used by Mr. Evil Telephone, but also regular travelers. Now, why would Pearl, a well-off squid, have a ton of bus tokens laying around when she could easily charter a limo or a plane? That's why I think Credits are a different currency.

    • @semidecent4395
      @semidecent4395 2 года назад

      I think Pearl mentions an exchange rate when you first run out of credits, and tells you not to worry about the conversion fees. So she might not have literal tokens, but it could still be a currency. Plus, you can also trade Metro tickets for G and Tickets later ingame.
