I’m so happy to see the tip about not over modernizing an older home to the point that the original character is lost. I have a 1931 craftsman with the original woodwork and my friends we surprised when I restored what I could (woodwork, floors, plaster) and kept any renovations within the “spirit” of the home’s original style. The most modern space is my kitchen, which is mostly neutral. Everyone expected me to rip everything out to make it “new”. lol, I bought a craftsman house bc it’s a craftsman!
I agree re your “craftsman”. I have done serial renovations in Sydney, with homes spanning many genres. In general I worked on clarifying the original form, removing rubbishy additions of various kinds and revealing beauty. It meant doing what the original would have wished. Also made homes light and airy and full of love. This has meant having windows and doors copied in one home to clarify a previous badly done extension. I never ever went into festering victoriana with frightening cupboards converted into bathroom vanities.
Thank you so much for saying that about “modernizing” homes. I’m tired of seeing people destroy beautiful old homes and sterilize them into having no personality or warmth to them whatsoever.
3:17 I actually think the one on the right makes perfect sense. The intent is very clearly to create an implied furniture shape out of those shelves, and I think it succeeds. The fact that it has more to look at than just the arch itself makes it fairly successful.
I agree with almost everything in this video, except-I have a Stiffel chandelier with hand cut crystals. I use incandescent chandelier bulbs, BUT always on a dimmer to make the light a soft yellow glow that bounces off the crystals brilliantly! For everything else, I really detest the bare bulbs with the blindingly harsh light.
Hi Reynard. I have really been inspired by your videos as I'm doing lots of work on a 105 year old timber boarding house here in Australia. I refuse to put downlights in the tongue and groove ceiling. All the old 6 inch hardwood wall lining I've pulled out are being reused to line the new kitchen. It's an injustice to "modernise" these old homes.
Reynard, you are so awesome explaining alternatives to common design trends/mistakes. I will continue watching you ash am in the process of re-building my small lake house inTexas.
For years I didn't buy lamps because it seemed wasteful when we had so many can lights, but I started adding lamps in the last few years and it really makes a huge difference in creating mood and energy in our living space. Glad you touched on this topic
Fantastic tips! I've often wondered how the designers make LED strips look so seamless and elegant instead of garish. Also I've been guilty of the "everything in the same neutral" - I'm learning so much!! PS love your beige jumper -- looks beautifully polished on camera! Xo from Canada ❤️
I have an empty wall in my entry hall. I've decided to go with an atrium vibe wallpaper mural. It's a bit scarey (and pricey) to go that route, but the wall is simply too empty without something on it, and there is zero room for any other sort of wall art, as guests will sit on an entry hall bench in front of it.
Edison bulbs just refers to the type of connector, it's the screw in type. You also get bayonet styled which is the one with the contacts on the bottom and the two notches. Otherwise found your videos quite informative :-)
You answered a question just by the simple phrase of, “You should only be displaying what is functional, sentimental or beautiful to you”. I recently replaced an ottoman with a coffee table. Everything I have is where I want it and I have been debating on whether I should get something to decorate it but deep down wanted it just with nothing. Same with my new end table. 😊😊.. Now I know that unless something with that criteria comes into my life, that is how they remain. ❤❤. Also, there is nothing neutral about my home. I need color. ❤ I have been a subscriber for about a month or so and I just love your channel.
I used to not get fun stuff for my house for fear of it going out of fashion too but y'know what... Was boring. So I stopped doing that. Now I'm more happy. Do what you want with your house.
I love your video but don’t understand the disdain for mass produced art. Not many of us have the budget or the inclination to DIY art. I’ve gotten a lot of art from Target and Home Goods. They look pretty good. There are a few I regret. I’ve also gotten art off Etsy. I think if a piece of art work makes you happy, go for it!
I dont think he hate "mass produced art" cuz it cheap, he hate it cuz every house/apartment got the same stuff. And supporting your local artist is better than buying soul less stuff that corpo churning out for pure profit.
Well I buyed some Displate artworks as well, but they do not really look like from Displate - they don't have much colors and have such a Japanese minimalism style, which does work for my living room really great. One Artwork I do have I found on Etsy (Japanese caligraphy). One big collage I did is from my favourite band. They do have such trading cards - yes, that was expensive. One Art is Pixelhobby I did myself of the Game of Thrones characters. Now I got a signed poster of a band I love. So I want to get that on my walls - so I buyed a frame for it. Waiting for its arrival XD And then I do have a calendar of my favourite figure skater. And there are photos of my cats. Was it expensive all toghether? For sure, but I did not buy that over one night. This was done over couple of years. I'm now since a year in my own appartment and do not like the emptiness of my walls in my office room. So there I will put some work into it in the next few months and some years. I love how my living room/kitchen and bedroom looks like, but the office is not quite there yet.
I really appreciate your distinction between the trend itself, and how badly/well it's executed. It changes the thought process from "I like this, but X picture makes it look tacky" to "I like this; how can I use it in a well-planned way?"
Some good helpful tips 👍 n handsome sweater choice today I definitely need to work on the wall art behind my living room couch-but hv zero art skills. So guess I can look around local artists
I’m staying short term with my parents as they’re a little older and need support. The Knick knacks part triggered me. In the same room there’s items from Africa, India, Japan, China and it’s too much… I am so triggered 😂
I like a good accent wall that's cohesive with the rest of the room & not a jarring contrast. I'm planning on a light to mid-toned (unlike the typical, dark, deep colors) tiki wall for my aquariums & plants that will frame everything together & not stick out like a sore thumb in my otherwise Boho-Japandi house. Framing it with gently carved, mid-toned, wood molding should do it justice & help it match the built-in book cases & provide balance.
Hahaha! I peek my previous home in your cover photo. I’m the guilty party of painting over my door frame. To be fair, it was lockdown and I lost my job. So I was having a bit of fun. Would love to be credited for the photo even if it was poor design haha! Thanks for your input. Definitely learning.
@@reynardlowellhot dang! 😅 poor toenail door doesn’t bring in as many views anymore. The internet and I nicknamed it this bc of a hilarious comment that said it looked like an overpainted pinky toe. 😂 ps: genuinely loved this video. You’re so kind even in your critiques!
I love what you do! Thanks for sharing! :) I see that many items can be bought on Temple and webster. I live in Denmark (europe), do you know if they ship to Europe?
You can make it longer and have two magnetic attachment points on the long sleeve and at the bottom of the sleeve have a little bars that stick out and actually block the tripod mount from spinning mechanically instead of just squeeze fit
While I agree on your last point about modernizing homes, a better location is certainly not an "exception" considering there's a whole "location location location" phrase.
Agree 100% with the LEDs. They already look tacky and childish to begin with but thatns to online personalities every sheep out there wants to jump on the trend and put LEDs everywhere...
I beg your pardon. Not all people use them because they're trending. Some of us plant parents use them for their plants that would burn to a crisp if put too closely to a window or window areas that don't get enough sunlight. I actually don't give 2 toots what anyone "thinks" about it because at the end of the day, I'm the one living there.
I have a question for you ......why you point out the same design aspects which are dated, not pleasing to the eye, poor quality etc etc. You as an ID should tried not to do what others have done 7 months prior. Being original, daring and unique is a great part of ID.

All lights should be dimmed. We have exposed style led kitchen pendants. They work really well dimmed and provide sufficient lighting for most tasks

Great advice we switching from pocket lights to can lights.
