From growing up in South London to the multiple unsuccessful trials and plans to give up playing, I signed my first professional contract with Crystal Palace a few months before my 22nd birthday. In 1991 I signed for Arsenal Football Club where I scored 185 goals in 288 appearances. I went on to play 581 league games, scoring 387 goals for seven clubs in England and Scotland, earning 33 caps for the English national team.
I am now fortunate enough to have a football broadcast career working for the BBC & ITV.
    Some Career Achievements:
185 goals in 288 appearances for Arsenal (2nd all time leading goal scorer)
117 goals in 253 starts for Crystal Palace (leading post war goal scorer)
33 caps for England Men’s National Team
    Premier League Winner (Arsenal): 97/98
Premier League Golden Boot (Arsenal): 91/92
    FA Cup (Arsenal) : 92/93, 97/98
    European Cup Winners' Cup (Arsenal): 93/94 #IanWright #Football #Arsenal

An inspiration to young people, never quit. I am listening to these amazingly detailed recounts and I am welling up emotionally in your pain and then smiling in your reward. When people used to say Wrighty is a bighead or a show off that is because they didn't know what you went through to get to where you are. Top man Ian, you earned everything you have and you are worthy of the term Legend 👏👏👏

I’m 50 next week but It’s your passion for the game that has me even to this day picking my boots up and going out to play footy. When people talk about the beautiful game I think of you and how you are the epitome of our game, the passion, the love and pure joy (and heartache) that we all watch you go through when you’re a pundit on TV for the England games, it’s like you’ve always been one our mates down the pub. 👍. You’re also a true gent, you used to come into Parcelforce depot sometimes at Mitcham to pick up your parcels, always smiling. Bless you man. 🤘

It was when they started to play Supporters who were racist baited them but even then fans around them took them on and the minority were slapped down !!

Think this highlights everything that was wrong with my club at the time. Credit Steve Foster for displaying the behaviours which made him such a great professional and club captain. Thanks for sharing that, Wrighty. And thanks to Steve Foster for what he did too. Also for Palace for having the faith in you to offer you a 4th trial after you turning them down three times. All of those experiences helped to shape your legend.
As a London kid growing up in the 80's and 90's, from a Sunday League background, who also LOVED his Diadora boots, knowing of your journey to Palace and then to Arsenal and England, were always my inspiration whenever I kicked a football.

To top it all Gary Lineker was there too and his face when i spoke about it will always stay with me!

From my experiences, most things start working out the moment you feel like giving up, that's when you get the unexpected phone call but this is from my personal experiences. Constant rejection will have an affect on anyone's motivation to succeed. Some people keep pursuing even when their motivation is gone and they eventually get a foot in the door even if it's not in their desired position. Others get lucky first time but have short careers by messing up due to bad attitude. The harsh reality is there are people who are qualified and extremely talented but will always be rejected or go unnoticed because they don't fit a company's brand image and the person with no qualification or talent will be chosen because of how they look. This happens a lot in the music industry and shows like X-Factor encourage this.
