Steve - 100% agree with your analysis here. And consider - Lybuskin down in Dallas, former leaf D, 30 yrs, Right shot, $3.25 per. Benoit ($1.35), Myers ($0.850) and Timmins ($1.1)... COMBINED... $3.3.... same cap hit, you got 3 depth pieces and 4/5 years per player younger. Thats some good work by the Leafs
Happy for Phil. That 2019-20 season he was an awesome second pair dman with Sanheim and earned that 3 year bridge deal. Many of us Flyers fans thought he and Provorov would be our top pair for a decade (lol). At some point halfway through the bubble, teams just started dumping it in his corner every chance they got and forechecking him hard and he started turning the puck over like crazy. I think the turnovers got in his head. That carried over into the next season and he struggled MIGHTILY, especially on the penalty kill m. His confidence was visibly shot and then was traded that offseason. Agree with you Steve, as a Leafs outsider but still a Phil fan I’m very intrigued if he can get back to the player he was. The offensive talent is there along with size and snarl.
They need to send bombs from the blue line. It never appears that they're shooting to score. There's value in just sending the puck towards the net, for sure. But a hint of a scoring threat on the blue line might open up the forwards a little bit more.
I miss the days of 3 skilled forwards setting up a triangle near the net and two defensemen ripping bombs from the point. No idea why the Leafs don't do something like that. It worked well for decades.
@@neonwired4978 I wonder if this is "the chicken or the egg" conversation. Are teams collapsing their defensive structure because the Leafs aren't a threat from up high? Or are the Leafs a non-threat from up high because defensive structure collapses down low? Why keep defenders on top of the d-men if they're just going to swing it to the winger on the half boards?
In the playoff's especially, you need to manage your lineup like baseball--all about the matchups--the key is to have the pieces ie--an offensive guy for 3rd pair in 1 situation and a tough shutdown guy in another situation, In a cap world this can only happen with moves like this one.
With guys like timmins and Myers in the system, I'd love it if just once the leafs could be the team that finds one of these reclamation projects and they turn into a real player. Like forsling for the panthers. Mcmann has been pretty good in that regard, but a big RHD in the top 4 changes this team in a big way.
I still watched yesterday and found myself asking, "who the hell is 51? Well he turned it over so I'm gonna call him Gardiner." Well turns out it's Myers, and yup that's a living breathing person that plays defense.
Not a 'daily' upload schedule, per se. But, there's always an LFR following each Leafs game, plus these types of videos when there's an interesting signing or contract extension
I like the contract, and maybe it's like you said he needs to get in more games, and get some confidence, and start to Gel better with Reilly. Right now at times I've noticed he looks a little lost out there. By no means am I saying he's bad. Just the scenario he's been put in doesn't make him look that good. Kinda get Sandin vibes from Myers. He's gonna make awesome plays, but then do some head scratching plays. Look and Sandin now tho, and if Myers ends up like that, then I'm pretty happy. Just hope Myers develops quick so we can go on a long cup run come playoffs.
8:41 *_"He scored a goal on the Leafs on a breakaway!"_* But of course he did. Please tell me you're not surprised? Any time you need to bump-a-slump, be it team-wise, or individual player-wise, just play the Leafs. 🔵 Your PP hasn't scored in 25 games? Just play the Leafs! 🔵 Your team hasn't been able to score more than 1 goal per game in 2 months? Just play the Leafs! 🔵 Haven't won a game in 10 games? Just play the Leafs! And the list goes on and on and... Although, I must admit, that hasn't been the case as much this season, but it's still an issue with the Leafs (heck, just look at prior to Christmas). At least this season, when the Leafs have a 3 (or 5) goal lead with 10 min left in the 3rd, I'm not expecting that lead to evaporate in a heartbeat or in an absolute panic when the other team scores a goal. Goal tending has improved greatly, as has player defense (although, there's still a few players that really frustrate me defensively! Will **COUGH** E. **COUGH** Styles **COUGH**).
Toronto has done a historically terrible job of getting players out of the QMJHL - I’m not sure if it is bad scouting or a bias against Quebec, but every year the Leafs bypass players who go on to make an impact in the NHL in favour of lesser prospects. Montreal compensates in the opposite direction by trying to stockpile Francophone players to appeal to their fan base. When people ask why these two historic franchisees are no longer dominant, I think that how they view the Q is a significant factor because it how they develop young players.
Amazingly, Steve was the voice of reason in his latest LFR. He did not overreact to the Leafs 2-1 win over the Islanders, as a team that is vying for first place in its division beat a team that is scraping the bottom of its division. Not only that, he was a voice of reason in recapping Team Canada's unexpected early exit from World Juniors. I didn't get to watch LFR until this afternoon, and what struck me was the contrast between his take, and an SN review of Canada's elimination, where four individuals who profess to know hockey argued that a knee-on-knee hit should not have been called a penalty. Then I continued my intake of hockey info by watching Steve excitedly proclaim "Philippe Myers Is A Leaf!" One of these days, I fully expect Steve to post a video where he proclaims in excitement "Joe Broni Is A Leaf!" But I get it. It is red meat for Leafs Nation. And good luck to Canada in its upcoming war with the United States. It can be a five-nation army against the Orange Teletubby: Canada, Mexico, Panama, Greenland and Denmark vs. the U.S. Hopefully, at the end of it, Steve can come on and excitedly say "New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now part of Leaf Nation!"
I did love it! Most impressive thing about Brad Treliving is his success signing good contributors for next to nothing. Navigating around the mess Dubis left behind must be annoying.
I find this a wild and exciting prospect to add another former Captain to play with Papi so Adam can win trivia next year. Toronto is the reclamation project city and we do have good Indian food.
Do you fail to remember the past 4 years people have said this about Rielly and than come playoffs he’s one of there best defenceman? As long as he steps up when it matter who gives a f
There has been a consistent decline in his play in my opinion not sure how you replace him but realistically if you really are going to win the cup Reilly needs to be on the 3rd line pairing imo
Another bum in the system and someone trying to sell him as the next big thing. Add him to the garbage pile with kempf/holmberg/reeves/jarnkrok/dewer... All players taking up money who don't produce points. Can't wait to go out first round dude to lack of scoring.
Steve, my good man, I'm convinced that you could just rant and rave incoherently and leaf fans would drool over your video. Try it for a minute on a video. You don't even need real words.
Steve, we need a 20 minute video for the Leafs reclaiming Dakota Mermis off of waivers next...
Let’s make it happen people keep liking this comment!
Why would you shorten it like that?

probably one of the greatest videos of the year steve! thanks
This is the dangle every next video is the best video
McMann signed a 2 year deal, not 3. It’s easy to mix up since Benoit signed a 3 year deal at the exact same cap hit (1.35m).
Brad loves his big tough old grizzled defense men
Darn you with your facts and logic. I thought it was two years, heard Steve say 3, got excited, and then you ruin it!

Myers has a cannon for a shot...no wonder Berube wants him to shoot more...
teams are collapsing back so its hard to get shots through
I totally agree..There are precious few quality shots coming from the defense at the line. Why is this?

Do you do these EVERY day?

Could be looking for longterm for at the trade deadline
I’ve seen this guy before! Tree loves his depth
What does Reilly do again?
Not only that but the Merman is back. Leafs Legend Dakota Mermis
Mo is a 7.5 defence??? Hello!!! Does anyone see a problem with that?
So if the leafs ever trade Myers does it have to be for a Ryan🤔😂

Steve, can you please make a video about the Leafs reclaiming Dakota Mermis off waivers? I think it would be hilarious
I wonder if this means hakanpas (sp) is done
He’ll be back for the playoffs
Wish Jay's would do something like this with their young talent. Different sport but still...
Who gets a $75,000 raise in one year? Philip Myers and Canada Post workers if it were up to their Union. Myers works weekends though.
Really? Which Canada Post workers?

Was always surprised at the fall of Myers he was so good early on.
How is this video 11 minutes? 😂
You should watch it.
It’s not…it’s 11 minutes and 10 seconds 😂
Next season, Myers will win Norris for sure 😁
Either a scratch or on the top pair? Is he the next Keith Aulie?
Shame on you. Tanev/McCabe is the top pair. Rielly is just the most expensive.
Why am I having an emotional response to knowing this player was on the Flyers that nearly made the ECF in the COVID playoffs... I feel sick 😂
This makes him waiver proof, 2 million for an 8th maybe 7th defender huge pass
I’m just glad that this likely gets him to 200 NHL games and a full league pension
My wife (who looks like Steve) doesn't like this deal. I'm on the fence on whether this is a good signing or not.
So, it sounds like you"re sayin, Reilly is a 3rd pair Dman.
Nice contract
Love this deal!!!

I got a cameo off this guy ...recommendee ... ...
He was already a Leaf, but I love this extension and for a cheap price tag!

Leafs trade Philip Myers to the Nashville Predators for Ryan O'Reilly and Luke Shenn. It will work there's a "Ryan" in the deal....
Do the playoffs start this weekend…
To this is a fake raise as with the cap going its prob pretty close to league min still
I could tell you said something about Latvia after the cut.
Jonathan Toews to the Leafs?
I find this a wild and exciting prospect to add another former Captain to play with Papi so Adam can win trivia next year. Toronto is the reclamation project city and we do have good Indian food.
and it will be Myers fault as Rielly continues to falter

Non news.
Wow the saving grace….. guys a bum
A bum that makes more money than you..
Great input 👏👏👏
Morgan rielly is what's not to like about this team
