    The outsiders who were killed, weren't killed because they did something wrong. They were always meant to be sacrifices, they were brought by Pelle and the guy who brought the English couple specifically for this purpose. Them doing something wrong (Mark and Josh) or trying to leave (the Brits) was only a catalyst. Dani was brought to join the community.

      So they override their basic *individual* rights for life; ...and that's pretty self-consistent, from what I've heard about this comment elsewhere in the comment section, where the cult puts the *collective* over the *individual* ...
      ...and all have a unified positive outlook concerning death that works *for people like Dani* that prefer it, and other "open-minded" people that want to interact with the community *without necessarily getting smth back in return* ...
      ...as per what collectivism implies, if not some sort of selfish priority over what *your community* , as opposed to *yourself* this time, wants over what "the Other" would want or needs from you (gratitude, ressources, knowledge, leadership)...
      ...if all that doesn't sound too uninformed or stupid ; p

      That's the reason the film makes no sense. If they were all brought there to be sacrificed, why did it matter that they stole their secret text and pissed on their ancestor tree? We were told to care about that but if they were always going to be murdered then who cares? Also, they were an incredibly stupid cult for luring people who would be immediately traced back to the "secret" community. Not only were they Pelle's friends, there would be flight records, CCTV footage leading straight to their door. If they just wanted people to sacrifice, why not snatch homeless people off the streets of Stockholm and keep them drugged. The twist ending took the power out of the movie.

    my interpretation of why josh snuck in to the building to take pictures of the scripture was that its a critique of anthropologists, who are often stereotyped to be more concerned with publication and making a name for themselves than with the well-being of the community they're studying, AND it could also have been motivated by Christian's new interest in the community as a subject for his thesis, like he knew Christian didn't get access to the scripture like he did, so it was his way of one-upping him.

    • @hayblade
      @hayblade 5 лет назад +71

      I think you're touching on something here that is important to the themes of the film that aren't mentioned in this review. On a larger thematic scale than the breakup, the film is exploring the differences between western culture/religion and the emphasis that is placed upon the individual over the community. If you look at a macro scale of your anthropologist critique, what you're fundamentally saying is that these characters place more value on the individual than the community. I think a lot of these critiques that Taylor has or doesn't relate to about the film can be answered with this concept. Christian is clearly named Christian for a reason.

      But I also think the movie is warning against the dangers of losing your individuality into a community that alienates you from the world. Where your sense of belonging suddenly blinds your individual moral needs, which is why in the end, Dani is capable of witnessing her past relationships being burnt, just like the community was when witnessing two people take their lives by jumping off a mountain.

    He was wearing marks face when he killed josh bc they had “skinned the fool” and wanted to make an example of josh too.
    Mark was oafish and ignored traditions and stomped on their culture, he consistently started eating before the group “said grace”, he literally pissed on their religious artifacts, and he refused to take any of their tradition seriously, making a “fool” of himself in the Hargan’s eyes. his corpse is wearing a jesters hat in the final scene to firmly establish that he was the fool.

    Honestly, I loved how the murder suicide wasn't the center of the horror plot. It was a realistic take on how one becomes abducted into this cult. It looked at murder suicide like an every day event, tragic as it may be, but it made such a horrific act look almost more rational and relatable than joining a cult that commits human sacrifice and ritual suicide. And it also plays on how in reality, tragedy in one's life can be used as a tool by a predator to manipulate you in to believing something entirely unbelievable, much how like Pelle used Dani's tragedy and her boyfriends emotional abandonment to influence her into joining their cult.

    I think the initial shroom trip was a primer. It was meant to ease them into things and make it seem fun and engaging. Remember Pelle is there to seduce them, he has brought them there as an offering. In order to lure them in, he has to make them feel comfortable. If they take the drugs he offers them once and it’s fun and nothing bad happens, he’s established some trust. So when he offers them some weird tea or they are coaxed into participating in some increasingly escalating weirdness, it’s like the proverbial boiling frog. The shrooms are the water just starting to warm up and foster that false sense of security.

      for real something about this movie was very intriguing and interesting to me. its one of those movies that you don't go to to be purely entertained (franchise movies like avengers) but a movie that you go to, to experience the movie. this movie has had me thinking about it for over a week after seeing it. having taken psychedelics, i feel that the movie does an amazing job at making the audience feel like what the characters in the movie are feeling. i felt like i was there with them. the psychedelic visuals weren't just a cool thing to do to be trippy, but to convey what the actual characters were going through. it felt like i was having a bad trip there with them. i felt lost, confused, and scared, and also able to see and understand where the cult was coming from in a weird way, showing how influenced the characters could be, especially from all the drugs they were taking. and thats just one of the aspects on why i think this movie is a good watch.

    • @sogloomy3392

      also i felt that the movie left out a lot of the "why" or the reasoning behind the rituals, ceremonies, and true detailed meaning for the things the cult did. it definitely explained things, but only giving enough information to still leave the audience questioning, or a little confused. again continuing to convey the same feeling the characters felt. and yes i believe this was done intentionally

    I like that you mentioned the juxtaposition between the visuals and the exposure, it conveyed a sort of clarity. I felt from Dani’s perspective things kept getting brighter, from the beginning of the movie where everything is dimly lit to the very end where she’s smiling and there’s lens glares. I felt the shots were perfectly framed, and were all very intentional. I liked the play on geometric shapes from the buildings to the way things were framed, like the mirror shots in which they have conversations. I felt that those shots especially were strong because they represented an already established disconnect between the parties speaking to each other, but then Dani speaks to pele and it becomes a close shot. Overall, I thought MidSommar was the better movie to Hereditary, but I also feel like more work and purpose went into midsommar.

    • @TaylorTano98
      @TaylorTano98 5 лет назад +5

      YES. Havent seen many others talking about the reflection shots. The first shot from the bathroom mirror as Dani talks to Christian on the phone really struck me, and then similar shots followed all throughout the movie where we would first see the shot reflected in a mirror or water before moving back into the real world
      I think this serves a couple of purposes. For one, like you said, it creates a sort of disconnect between the normal world and the culture the characters are now inhabiting (through the looking glass style), but I think it has thematic relevance too. Through the whole movie, Dani has no real social outlet for her grief. Christian is essentially only maintaining a mostly apathetic relationship with Dani so he doesn't have to feel guilt for leaving her when she's already going through so much. None of his friends particularly care for her, and she has no one else to talk to about what she's feeling. The only person who even makes a dent is Pelle who's essentially just reflecting what she already feels with his own story of parental death. And that reflecting and mirroring becomes the whole reason Dani becomes so entrenched in the culture and comes to consider the people there her new family. Because instead of dismissing her emotions or even just trying to tell her that they're valid, they simply mirror everything she does and feels, right down to her breathing and wails of pain after she discovers Christian's infidelity. The real horror at the end is that Dani's revenge (essentially her breakup with Christian) is an emotional release in all the wrong ways. She's free of him (and all her ties to the initial trauma) but she's also now surrounded by people who will never challenge her to grow and cope in healthy ways, but will simply mirror and reflect whatever she's currently feeling. She's traded in one toxic relationship dynamic for another...

    • @drartemisa21
      @drartemisa21 4 года назад +2

      @@TaylorTano98 Taylor Tano I agree with most of what you said up until the parts about trading one toxic relationship for another. The Harga being a secret cult that lures in outsiders to be sacrificed every 90 years aside, I think another reason Dani finds them so compelling and finds their way of life a fresh change is because they allow her to express her emotions outwardly, instead of having to always hide it by gulping in horrible cries in bathrooms. It's not a mirroring that won't let her cope. Instead, it's allowing her to let out her emotions and by the deep show of empathy, serves as a validation to her feelings.
      I can't tell the amount of times it felt good to have someone laugh with me, or cry with me, as opposed to standing awkwardly aside and lending a half hearted "its gonna be okay."
      Reciprocity is a big part of the Harga culture, and it connects them deeper than even a normal family, because it creates a bond in them.

    I actually thought it was better than Hereditary, if only a little. Solid 10/10 for me. I found the camerawork to be some of the best I've ever seen, and the subtle use of special effects puts most movies to shame. The story was predictable but it seemed to really wear that on its sleeve and tell the audience "even if you kinda know where this is going, we'll still surprise the hell out of you."
    A little better than Climax. Currently best film of the year.

      I too enjoyed it as an visual experience. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen. However, the writing is too mediocre and there doesn't seem to be any big ideas that managed to violate Aster's aesthetic (allegory is dull if not done masterfully), unlike Hereditary. Aster is great at visual storytelling as any director worth a damn should be...but I can't say he's works with any original thinking.

    The key to understanding the surface narrative of this film is to understand the belief system of the characters like Pelle.
    So, Pelle is on a holy quest to retrieve a May Queen candidate and ritual sacrifices. This is his entire goal and reason for being in the United States, and why he has ingratiated himself with the 'future tour group'.
    He NEEDS to bring a woman, who is born in May. Guess who has a birthday in May, and her birthday is referenced several times in the movie? Dani.
    Ideally Pelle would've have entered the romantic relationship right away and then easily convince her to go along, but unfortunately she was already in a long-term relationship with Christian. Pelle's brother Igmar actually attempts this strategy himself, but it doesn't work out.
    In Igmar's case we actually learn he went on a date with his May Queen canidate, but it didn't work out and they decided to remain friends. Igmar then befriend's the boyfriend as well to help insure that she will still be able to go (and he gets a sacrifice to bring as well)!
    Because Dani is romantically unavailable he instead focuses on befriending Christian. If he can get Christian to go on the trip he can likely get Dani to come as well. The problem is that Christian doesn't tell Dani about the trip and he discovers that he now only has two weeks to someone figure out how to get Dani to come. Worse, Pelle would know from talking to Christian and hearing him complain that it is likely that he is actually, finally, going to break up with Dani. This will make it almost impossible unless he somehow forces Christian and Dani back together.
    So, Pelle decides to murder Dani's entire family.
    If he kills them Dani will have nobody except Christian. Christian will not be able to break up with her because of the guilt and will remain in the relationship. And what better way to get some emotional space and healing than going to an idyllic new country and get lost in a new culture? It'd be too perfect to resist.
    So you wanna know how he did it? Alright....
    Pelle isn't close with Dani before the trip, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been listening. He would know from Christian's complaining alone about the constant suicide scares Dani goes through with her sister. He would know her sister lives with her parents. He'd have a multitude of ways, as Christian's friend, to figure out Dani's parent's address. Dani's sister is the perfect patsy. He likely had this contingency planned for a long time.
    So he chooses to break into their house at a very early hour in the morning and murder Dani's sister and her parents. After they are dead he uses Sister's computer to send Dani the most generic suicide message possible. A message Dani later describes as something like 'nothing she's ever written before'.
    Dani reads this note and gets distressed and messages her sister back. In fact, on the sister's computer you can see that there are 4 unread messages from Dani. This means Pelle sent the first message and left.
    There are indeterminate, yet likely lengthy, stretches in-between these four messages. Dani then calls her parents, but thinks they are asleep. After the call Dani stops contacting and likely goes to sleep. Hours and hours of time will have passed since the murder and nobody has any idea what happened. This gives Pelle enough time to go back to where he lives and pretend like he wasn't involved. Nobody will suspect him either, since he 'doesn't really know' Dani and has no obvious motive.
    So, that's what actually happened to Dani's family. They were murdered by a cult member on a holy quest to retrieve a bride and sacrifices. Pelle wanted this to happen so that he could be a 'May King' and not have to be sacrificed like his brother was.

      My thinking behind is their beliefs about nature and balance. You can see examples of it early on when Dani see grass sprouting from her hand. And then when the two older people die, the woman talks about a kind of “recycling” and becoming one with nature. Josh’s leg is feeding their vegetation, giving life to the plants that give them life, almost like cannibalistic tribes that believe eating the flesh of an enemy gives them that enemies strength and spirit.

    Super happy I found a new movie critic to watch! Personally, the gore in Midsommar took me out of the film. I think the actual narrative was interesting (spoilers: Danny's sister taking her own life and her parents versus the elders offering their own lives) but I didn't need minutes of shredded cabbage face to appreciate it. Maybe seeing the gore was supposed to emphasize Danny's perspective shifting and parallel how difficult it was for her to see death and her bf differently?
    Also I had a similar gripe with Josh's suddenly deciding to violate the trust of his hosts. I'm pretty sure he violated some ethics guidelines doing that.

  • @linaaviles430
    @linaaviles430 5 лет назад +3

    You understand how Dani choosing Christian at the end as the sacrifice is basically a metaphor for her breaking up with him, taking control over the relationship. Well, even tho Christian was drugged it’s basically a metaphor for him doing the one thing he had left to be the ultimate shitty boyfriend without violence: cheating.
    That’s the great thing about this film, you can watch it two ways: literally, in the way that shows the cult and sacrifices and shit. And metaphorical where you can see the relationship coming to an end and everything that is happening is a symbolism of how it feels.

    I agree with the "messiness" of the execution. I didn't know if Aster was trying to say something about mental illness again, like is implied in Hereditary as a separate horror, or just as something irredeemably tragic. I also felt that there was a lack of restraint in the gore, like the guy getting his head bashed three to four times even though he is clearly dead, and consistent flashbacks to it. I prefer a sort of restraint or suspense in that regard but that is more an opinion than anything. The more I think about it, the more I like it, but for the first few days after viewing I couldn't really figure out my feelings.

    thank you for making this video, it seems that so many youtubers completely misunderstood the movie and are out there expressing how "bad" it is, especially because they use hereditary as a comparison piece. i absolutely loved this movie and it hurts me that i see people commenting things like "damn i was looking forward to seeing this one" on other reviews on this, because there should be more people seeing this in theatres. it's honestly baffling that so many people can't think for themselves, leading to them relying on personas from the Internet to develop their opinions for them. just see what you want!! develop your opinions based on YOUR experience!

    Simon - AIR (kept in the air with lungs released)
    Connie - WATER (being drowned)
    Josh - EARTH (buried towards the earth, legs up)
    Christian - FIRE
    4 newcomers are sacrificed for the elements to be supportive of the village.
    Mark - JESTER
    Stuffed like a puppet with a jester's cap symbolizing him acting without any reflection. Because he doesn't have any sense of consequences (pissing on the tree), so he can be used as a puppet - so they wear his skin, his image.

    Aster stated in several interviews that there are funny scenes in these movies on purpose. I agree that sometimes the audience laughs while there is nothing to laugh really, but there are also scenes that are jokes on purpose, especially in Midsommar.

    We wouldn't have had a movie without the murder/suicide of Dani's sister and parents. Without this tragedy, Dani wouldn't have gone to Sweden with Christian and the gang.

      imagine if there was a movie just about the Christian and his mates in Sweeden.

    The shrooms scene is to properly disorient the characters before they get to the town proper.

    Regarding the scene where Josh asks Christian to look at the paragraph, I was actually glad the movie didn't show us the sidebar. It's obvious that they will be having an uncomfortable conversation about taking Dani on the trip. I love it when movies treat their audiences as intellegent enough to not spoonfeed every bit of information. Brilliant use of show don't tell without even showing the conversation!

    The horror is the girl slowly being absorbed into a cult. That's why you feel dread but aren't sure why. It's horror only if you think cults are bad. I'm no historian, but it's the only POV absorption into a cult film I know of. That's why people don't know what to make of it. It's pretty new ground, as far as I know. It's easy to miss the forest looking at the trees
