- Nott is prepared to sacrifice herself to protect her friends. Nott the brave indeed................
At this point I think it's more of a Sam Riegel trait.
Taken from Campaign 2, Episode 45 "The Stowaway" - Развлечения
Sam Riegel - "I don't know how to play Dungeons and Dragons"
Also Sam: Consistently makes the most clutch tactical plays.
Jester had her action to disengage with, though.
Hjernespreng dash action
@@nikhilbhavani981 I'm not sure they knew, none of them has ever done it as a class other than rogue/monk. It's probably the most often forgot action in 5e.
If you don't know this, Sam's is the smarter move since Jester is strong enough to pick up Nott on her turn and get out of there.
@@Hjernespreng the reason he didnt disengage is because jester had to get out and if he disengaged hester would have been attacked with that attack of opportunity.
@@ericvernick5740 Jester could have disengaged with her action. Everyone can disengage it's not a class feature.
Remember that Nott drew away a horde of goblins so her family could escape. It's like she's making the same decision here for her New family.
Look buddy, i dont need to be crying right now
Manticore too.
Who's cutting onions in here?
And she relived that fateful day when they were running through the jungle, away from the snake people.
Nott scouted ahead after they all had been running for hours. She then found and lead a hunting party of lizard folk away from her parties escape route, dashing solo into the jungle, taunting the hunters into chasing her instead of pincering the whole group.
After dodging their attacks and hopefully running headlong towards the beach, she burst through the underbrush of the shoreline to find her family safe.
A little out of breathe, but safe. :) It worked.
@@TenFires which episode is this? I know the general area, but I'd like to know.

Nott at 1 hit point:
"I'm okay"
*sips coffee*
It's fine
I immediately imagine her with a bleeding shoulder, struggling for breath and shaking, and she looks directly at Caleb and keeps muttering “I’m okay, I’m okay”
She's Nott okay
@@trial_with_an_error9687 "tis but a flesh wound " she mumbles as she begins to bleed out.
He did the same as scanlan its epic everytime
The fact that Sam was debating weather or not to stay and fight while having one hit point says so much about his character
A hero is a hero, no matter how small.
Here's to you Nott, the bravest of them all.
Add "of them all" to "Nott, the bravest"
Makes it rhyme and also incorporates the title of the video in.
@Kristopher Chavez It surely was. :D
@@Z0mb13g4m3r88 Excellent idea!
Nott could have halved the damage with uncanny dogde
but he wants to do more damage, rather then only escaping.
"go youve done enough YOU DID ENOUGH *DONT DO IT* " THE GROWING PANIC
Liam "Never Breaks Character" O'Brien over there
he broke character.
because that was his real emotion right there.
@@XpVersusVista caleb feels tho
@@XpVersusVista Sam is his best friend, and he was already upset because *Caleb* would have run away (which is exactly what he did) because he's a coward, but *Liam* wanted to stay and try to help all of his friends make it out alive. And IIRC, Liam helped Sam create Nott in the first place, so he would have about the same level of investment in Nott as Sam would.
@@gamester512 i don't think you understood what i meant. please re-read my comment without a negative attitude :)
My comment was exactly worded BECAUSE i know that Sam is his best friend and that they created their characters together. That's why i made the joke of "he broke character". Because that was 100% *LIAM* emotion. That was not played/acting, it was actually real. Which is what my comment tried to jokingly point at, but you seemed to miss that.
@@XpVersusVista I didn't have a negative attitude. Keep in mind, I don't have any "cues" about whether you had another meaning like I would if we spoke in person, like a facial expression or verbal emphasis. So I really had no way to tell if you were actually making a joke, or if you were being serious.
I apologize if my remark came across as rude or mean-spirited, that wasn't my intention at all.
2:22 Liam already losing his mind and then Sam shows him the tablet and poor Liam has a melt down
Sam is so good he can even break the other players. What chance do we poor spectators have.
I feel bad for liam
OMG
look at the emotion on Liam's face after he takes off his glasses and lowers his head, he knew what his friend had done and the reason behind it.
Nah, that's Liam feeling guilty because he ran basically straight for the exit while Nott and Jester almost died.
It's both his guilt about staying true to his own, cowardly character, his realization that either of his friends almost died at the table that day, and his pride in Sam Regal. Nott, 100%, would sacrifice herself for another if she needed to. She's a beautifully constructed character and Sam helped her truely shine in this moment. Even Sam hesitated, but Laura was his friend, Jester is NOTT's friend.... Nott has risked her life 3 times now for Jester. (Twice with Lorenzo, and now this) And I feel that this is the kind of bond Jester needs to help her grow.
@@ashleycook300 And now Jester has returned the favour via cupcake flavour.
man this is almost like the "You saved your wish for me?" from the last campaign
As soon as nott ran I knew what Sam was doing.. Still so heroic
forget that, look at liam when he doesnt use the disengage, or when he shows him the 1hp. that man was 0.1% away from crying
i cant deal with sam laura or liam this whole video. liam being pretty much in tears the whole time, laura quietly whispering "are you taking the reaction" and just going in for the softest hug, sam's absolute determination. he was actually ready to die just then and all three of them know it.
Man had the fucking DIE _IN HIS HAND_ ready to fire that crossbow, which, on a Nat 1, could have hit _him_
Watch Taliesin when Sam confirms that Nott moves away from the dragon without disengaging. He immediately understood why Sam did that.
He even asked him to make sure, but yeah, Taliesin has always been one of the quickest to pick up on what's going on.
Marisha also get it
Yeah Tal's got it. He always seems to get this kind thing Very fast
DarkHorseAsh when you’re 4000 years go you tend to get it
Liam knew too but he was more heartbroken than anything.
I love how Liam literally breaks when he sees Sam is on 1 hit point.
When I saw this live, I got chills when Sam immediately said "No" and took the hit.
I cried when Laura just threw her arms around Sam. (Damnit I'm crying again thinking about it!) It honestly brings me RIGHT back to Molly's death and Jesters rescue from Lernzo... When Nott throws her arms around a bound Jester, only this time, it is Jester embracing Nott...
“you’ve done enough…You did enough!…You did enough!!!…DON’T DO IT!!!!”
-Travis “Hype Man” Willingham
One of my favorite Liam things is when he throws away his glasses and buries his head from stress and anxiety. Or when his best friend tells him about how easy-go-lucky his childhood was.
Sam was willing to take the hit and die than leave and let his friend die... even at death's gate he's still deciding whether to fire another shot or flee... absolutely one of the best player in Dnd.
Nott wouldn't have died, though. Honestly, it was just a smart tactical move. Nott moves first, and she's the smallest - thus the easiest to carry. If the opportunity attack knocked her out, Jester would still be able to run over, grab Nott and get her out where she and Cad can immediately heal her. Nott wouldn't have died in that scenario since she moves first and thus can be saved.
Had Notte gone through without taking the attack, Jester would be left with Twiggy. Jester would probably go down, Twiggy might fail on a strenght or athletics check to save her - she might have a potion that could've healed Jester, but the potion probably wouldn't get Jester high enough to survive a new hit. Basically, Nott taking the hit was the smart choice.
It was a really clever move, but not one that would've cost Sam his character :3
@@Neko141212 it was a really dumb move because both Nott and Jester could take the disengage action, move and bonus action to leave the chamber. Neither would had taken hits
@@jorgenaranjo8029 True, but everything points to the group having forgotten that - everyone was freaking out and no one brought up that Jester could use her action to disengage. Laura had forgotten, so she'd make Jester run without disengaging - thinking that there's nothing she could do - and then get hit by the dragon. So it was still a good move of Sam - who probably had also forgotten that Laura could disengage, otherwise he more than likely would have reminded her
@@Neko141212 its a selfless and good intentioned move. Not a smart one. Two different things. I love that Sam was willing to sacrifice himself to save Jester, but that wasnt needed. Great gesture, good intention, still not a smart move.
@@jorgenaranjo8029 I'd say it was smart within the group's reactions. Yes, she could have disengaged, but no one remembered that - in that case what Sam did was smart.
But yes, obviously it would've been smarter to just remember that Jester had the disengage-action
God. Caleb/Liam. His guilt over running instead of breaking character. That hurts to look at.
The moment when everyone watching cried
This whole scene, everyone was terrfied, and on the verge of tears. They knew if they left her, Jester would've died, but most of their characters would not have risked their own lives for another the way Nott did. Nott, instantly became my favorite in this moment, and her friendship with Jester is by FAR my favorite bond. I know I will shed real tears if either of them die. Even thinking about it is getting me a little misty eyed.
Ashley Cook I already cried for Molly. I don’t want to cry for another friend.
In Caleb's defense he still has the notion in mind that he can someday attain time travel so...
True, but if Liam's thinking in character there he's thinking 'I am about to have someone close to me die, again, when I could be the reason they're alive.'
Sam the clutch fiend. When I watched this live I didn't catch that jester was also at 1 hp. Absolute madness this game.
theRISEundaunted yeah it is, I have a question, who is next for the them song
Pretty sure she had 15 health left. She was just reiterating that sam had 1 hit point left. You can see she was looking at his tablet when hugging him as matt read off the damage.
@@jcoonie2 at 2:34 taliesin says, "they both have 1." but maybe he was being over dramatic haha regardless, cool stuff
@@Madlaph ooohohohohoooo you'll see soon amigo;)
theRISEundaunted she wasn’t a 1 she looked at Sam then Matt and said it
This moment is merely minutes away from Twiggy taking down the dragon by herself. this whole episode was insane.
I was amazed they ended up running because between all the successful hiding and the elemental that dragon was *clearly* getting wrecked.
Aww Laura was so scared to say Jester was leaving for fear that Matt wold pull a trick from up his sleeve and Matt noticing and making the move for her
watching this over and over, you get to see everyone else's reactions and I think taliesin's is my favourite.. nothing but respect for sam on his face
Willingly taking an opportunity attack from a dragon at 18 hit points.
She earned that comma.
Sam may be a goofball but he's probably the most chess master level player on CR.
Reminds me of a comment about the last campaign I saw somewhere. "While everyone else was playing chess Scanlan lost his game of checkers." Sam is without a doubt the master of the long con.
The number of debuffs on that dragon it's like Molly's ears incarnate
I think one of my favourite parts of crit role is Sam doing something crazy and his response when called out on it just says "Yeah" as though it's just another day in the office
Liam after Sam shows him the iPad with one hit point. ;A;
he even takes a shot to see if he can kill the dragon so jessie gets out clean
Poor Liam looks stressed as hell.
Well, to be fair, by keeping in-character with how cowardly Caleb is by having him just "NOPE!" out of there, Liam likely believed that he'd just left his best friend's character to die....and possibly Laura's as well. That would stress out *anyone* let alone Liam who counts Sam as one of his absolute closest friends.
If I were in that same position, I'm not sure I could have even made myself do the same thing.
Though, granted, I tend to play characters who place more value on the lives of their friends and companions than on their own lives, so most of my characters would have been like "I will only leave here once I know the rest of you are safe, so get moving!" Especially concerning my Minotaur Barbarian/Fighter. Even against odds as badly stacked as an entire army chasing them down, if he believed it would ensure the survival of his friends, he would willingly pull a "You Shall Not Pass!" and try to fight literally an entire army *alone* just to buy his friends as much time to escape as possible. He would emphatically state that he would be "the first one into a fight, and the last one out".
Nott is a badass, scraping by with just enough health to get away and baiting the creature to attack while also debating standing and fighting with just 1 health. She is truly one of the saddest, most believable characters in the mighty nein, while also being the oldest (halfling). Best party mom who will protect her friends as best she can even while taking hits herself. Akin to "9th level counterspell".
Yep. Sam pulling a moment almost as great as their campaign's finale this early on (alongside the baby manticore killing to save fjord) makes you wonder what miracles Nott, the brave will achieve later on
I´m 100% sure that that 1HP Nott had left was Taliesin intervening with his Eldritch powers for the bravest thing she cold have done
Watch the range of emotions on Liam's face.
Nott took the dragon's reaction roll instead of Jester, which is why he didn't disengage. I would hug him too :,D
Watch how concerned Liam is for his husband.
Sam couldn't save Vax, but he saved Jester
Having to convince him/her that he/she's done enough in this condition speaks volumes.
Liam looks so incredibly stressed after Sam chooses to not(t) disengage
And Sam knew exactly how to break him further when he showed him his HP
This is one of those moments I hope we can see animated someday if C2 gets adapted as well, one of my faves
NOTT THE BRAVEST. NOTT'S OUR GIRL.

Laura hugging Sam made my heart melt
this whole episode was gold. tons of plot twists and ups and downs and great character moments. this moment was such a highlight too. i feel like it unconsciously shaped how i play my own rogue.

Nott earning her comma.
Ok I know the scene is clutch and all but Tal's outfit+makeup was on point that day like damn
Sam is f*ing awesome. A true friend.
Im crying. Twiggy's moment at the end was cute and all but Nott on full mom-mode is just something so blessed.❤️
Nott the Bravest? yeah right.... are we sure that Sam rolled a rogue and not a Paladin by accident?
Not enough war crimes to be a paladino's.
LIAM WHEN SAM SHOWS HIM HIS HIT POINTS
Nott didn't hear no fucking bell
I'm literally Liam during this god DAMN I love Nott
He’s earned that comma
someone needs to animate this scene pronto.
Nott the Bravest
Not only is this an epic sacrifice for a friend, it’s an epic tactical play. By taking the reaction hit, the only person in the room with healing spells can’t be knocked unconscious with only a tiny gnome to carry her out while trying to escape. Worse case scenario with Sam’s plan was Nott getting knocked unconscious by the reaction hit, jester healing her and carrying her out (or the other way around/ just getting out and letting Cad heal her). They were less than 15 feet from the pedestal, so even with half movement for carrying Nott, Jester would have been able to carry her out. Nott taking the hit saved both of them.
IIRC, at this point Jester's spells were completely exhausted, so she actually couldn't have healed Nott, only Caduceus could have done so, and he had already fled.
And then twiggy killed the dragon, but everyone's already left so nobody can know for sure.
Travis’ pure awe kills me
0:35 the entire room goes
Fjord: *oh shit...*
Marisha: W H A T
Caleb: *that's my goblin!*
Sam: *fuck the dragon*
Laura: *excuse me the fuck*
Taliesin: *happy supportive noises*
someone put thESE TEARS IN MY EYES
Pretty sure the title needs that comma in it...
Or at least a hyphen.
So sweet, still makes me tear up
This is absolutely one of the best combat moments of campaign 2, my jaw hit the fucking floor when Sam said no
Run?
I think Nott.
What a clutch move!
Thanks for the clips, saves me a lot of time :)
don't you love it when the overly technical people can't just appreciate a play that may have been fueled by tension leading to the players maybe forgetting stuff but still produced an awesome storytelling moment that made a character's personality truly shine and strengthened her bond with of her friends? because i sure don't
LetTheBodyFall yuuuuup
BUT THEY AREN'T PLAYING THE OPTIMAL WAY. THEIR CHARACTERS AREN'T ALL POWERFUL GODS USING PLAYER KNOWLEDGE TO CHEAT THE GAME AND BREEZE THROUGH IT WITH ZERO CHALLENGE. THEY'RE ACTUALLY PLAYING FOR...FUN
It was still optimal from my POV (having watched it a few times already, it really was optimal) because nott not disengaging and taking the AoP gave jester an extra action that she could use if it needs be. Even if nott falls, Jester will have an action to carry nott out. If jester needed it, she could even heal herself. So it really was optimal.
Well, I sure do like to point out small mistakes, but I do also hate people who do it in a rude manner. It is completely fine to point out mistakes as long as it is constructive and not hurtful.
A lot of people don't get that though. They like to rave on whenever somebody makes a mistake, usually towards a specific person, ignoring it whenever the rest mess up, because they all seem to have an agenda against their least favorite person. That gets super annoying, real fast.
I've been saying it to all that talks about this moment, their feelings are real, even if the tension is based on a misunderstanding. Let the emotions guide you, not whether they are based on accurate information. The same goes for how dangerous the dragon was in general. An easy kill if they stood and fought, but they don't know that, and it shows on their faces. That should be your focus, it certainly was mine, even with the knowledge that they could have easily escaped.
Edit: I want to add that before you point out mistakes, try to check if it has already been pointed out. The further I scroll down this comment section, the more comments about the disengage action I see. There are like five in a row right below this comment on my screen, and if they'd just bothered to scroll a bit, we'd only need one.
None of them are rude or hurtful, they are more curious, since they don't have the full context, so they are at least aware that they could have missed something, but it still adds to the stuff the cast has to see, and I'm pretty sure they only need to read one comment about it to get the message.
Like with bowlgate. We get it, you're upset, stop posting about it. They got the message about 600 comments ago. You are entitled to your opinion, but do they really deserve the pile on?
I've listened to all the eps on podcast, and watch more clips than I'd like to admit, and this is hands down the best. We're not worthy of Sam, a real gamer and even better friend.
Deborah got to witness one of the most selfless acts of the entire campaign while trying to do the same with her character, Twiggy.
Leave it to Nott to steal someone's thunder XD
The matron in the shadows...

#ThereisSOafuckingcomma!
watching this live was friggen edge of my seat. I was so scared for jester. such an awesome moment.
This is one of my most favourite episodes
this is one of my favorite moments of campaign two
*nott the brave*
Still my all time favorite moment
Sam is so consistently the MVP
I remember watching this and having no idea what Nott would not use bonus action disengage, it made no sense to me till it dawned on me why Nott did that
Someone needs to animate this whole fight with the dragon
i just love sam riegel playing d&d, its just such a joy to play...i specially love how he say's its nott's turn, it's not jester's turn
Pretty sure Sam could've used Uncanny Dodge to halve the 18 points of damage to survive regardless. Still, doesn't detract from the selflessness of the act.
The attack was from behind so she couldn't see it which means no Uncanny Dodge
@@locosnake4436 I always assumed being able to see the attack was referring to being in darkness or if the attacker was invisible.
Another interesting tidbit that I noticed: Blue Dragons deal an additional 1d10 lightning damage on a bite attack, which would have put Nott down. I think Matt was being a merciful god.
@@RatMortar Think that was actually based on how the blue dragon didn't have his lightning attack back yet? Or it being an attack of opportunity. He seemed as surprised as anyone else just how few hitpoints Nott had left.
Thank you, thought I was the only one who thought that
Pretty sure sam was saving his reaction since he handt decided if he was going to leave the room yet. He debated for an awful long amount of time whether to leave the room at the end.
As for matt not including the lightning damage mightve been foresight lost on him in the moment. He was just as surprised as everyone else at sams health so i dont think he was tracking their numbers at the time
I believe Jester would've made it even without Nott taking the hit. She could've disengaged with her action since touching the sphere was a bonus action. Still, this moment was one of the sweetest in the campaign so far and I can't stop rewatching it.
Close! Nott is a rogue, which let her use the orb as a bonus action. Jester would have had to use her action to use the orb, meaning she couldn't use it to disengage. She was almost certainly dead unless the dragon wiffed 3 attacks.
@@MrSmsch Uh, there's nothing about rogues that let them use items as bonus actions.
@@Hjernespreng On review I was thinking of the Thief subclass, which does get that ability. Guess OP was correct!
@@MrSmsch It most certainly only took a bonus action to touch the orb since it's just a quick movement. Especially since Matt allows players to chug potions with bonus actions, which are way more advanced movements. Twiggy used a bonus action for the orb moments later as well.
Circumstances might have changed. Jester was on fire and Nott did that to ensure Jester gets out. It is true that they are playing a bit suboptimally (Nott didnt yse uncanny dodge for the AoP), but it's all part of the game and tension.
Anyone here after ep 91 campaign 3 🥺🥺🥺
5 years later, rewatching the campaign.
Sam plays so much better than Taliesin. Taliesin died as Molly and now ANYTIME he is lower than half HP he panics and demands he be healed first (not so much as Cad, but definitely with Ashton) because god forbid his character dies again.
Then there's Sam. Who, even as Scanlan, was okay with dying. His characters didn't want to die, but didn't mind rolling the dice against fate to see what they could get away with. And this time? He rolled high and got out of there with his friend Jester.
its beautiful how awesome these gamers are
Dude, Sam is so fucking clutch. I just got done watching the final arc of campaign 1 and holy fucking moly he was the MVP easily.
"I cast Counterspell." - "At what level?" - "NEIN!"
Nott is consistently the bravest of the Mighty Nein
And it’s cuz nott does consider running since they are quite skittish but when it counts nott was will to sacrifice her life just to try and stop the dragon
Sam riegal, the guy who talks the moat shit to his friends, but cares for them arguably the most
Tehcnically Nott has uncanny dodge, so no way he would've died there, but I just like to think that surviving with only 1 hp is way cooler
I love this sequence sooo much but it kinda sucks when you remember that Jester could have just disengaged
Earning a comma be like:
Well laura could also have disengaged, but i don’t wanna take anything away from the best :D
@@gayghostprince she would have. Disengage is an action unless you're a rogue, and it was a bonus action to touch the orb (Sam mentioned being able to shoot again as a bonus action would remove the ability to touch the orb, hence why travis was freaking out)
@@Mephiston yeah I realized that and tried to delete my comment, but couldn't find it. thank you for being patient tho
@@gayghostprince No worries. Have a lovely week.
“Take a chance, till the dice”
True to the song he helped write 😂😂
You know I never understood why he did not use his reaction to uncanny dodge, I guess he just wanted to leave it at 1 hp for the amazing moment.
It was certainly a great moment, but a little undercut by the fact that jester could have taken her action to disengauge, and not taken a attack of opportunity, and still gotten ok out with a bonus action.
Okay, I know this scene is incredibly hype. But did not need to take the dragons reaction? Nott could have used an action to disengage and a bonus action to leave (or the other way around since rogue), then after that Jester could have used her action to disengage and bonus action to leave.
Is there something that I missed?
Hey I’m an idiot, can someone explain why Liam is having a panic attack about nott’s turn?
Because Sam was debating if he could attack one more time and kill the dragon versus leaving. If he did he was probably dead or Jester needed to carry her out as well. But they didn't know if the orb can teleport 2 creatures out at the same time so, he already took the dragon reaction so that Jester can just run to the orb and leave. Liam/Caleb was so close to losing Nott. When Sam showed him he had 1 hp left. Ohhh... Riegel hits hard.
Batu Soysal ohhhh shiittttt
I think he explained later that he felt guilty about staying true to his character. Liam wanted to stay and fight, but he knew Caleb is a coward and wanted to run for his life, so he did. Caleb just ran and left them there with basically no backup, and Liam felt really guilty, especially with how close both Jester and Nott came to dying.
