  • Canadian musician Jacob Hoggard was sentenced to five years behind bars on Thursday in the sexual assault of an Ottawa woman, an offence the presiding judge called a “particularly degrading rape.”
In delivering her sentence in a downtown Toronto courtroom, Ontario Superior Court Justice Gillian Roberts said Hoggard’s offence involved “gratuitous degradation” and “gratuitous violence.”
“It is no exaggeration to say that (the woman) is no longer the same person she was before the attack. She was physically hurt … far more significant was the psychological hurt,” Roberts said.
The 2016 sexual assault took place in a Toronto hotel room and the Ottawa woman told Hoggard’s sentencing hearing that what happened will haunt her for the rest of her life.
Catherine McDonald has more on the sentencing and what comes next.

My niece dated him before he was going to court for this. At the time he was playing the woman that is now his wife, my niece and another girl. He had drugs such as meth and ghb at his house most of the time. I believe he is guilty af!!!!

An adventurous 23 year old keen to experience life? What a weird choice of words for someone agreeing to fly somewhere to have sex with a man she met on line. He obviously needs to go to jail for his behaviour and this young lady needs to heal from her experience and look at why she would put herself at risk in the first place. She is fortunate that it wasn't someone who could have killed her.

I had a chance to work with and train Jacob in the early 2000s at a restaurant in Burnaby, BC before he auditioned for Can Idol. I knew him personally and have had numerous war battles with him in the kitchen. He would always try to one-up on other servers singing birthday songs for customers/guests if they came in on their bday, he was loud and definitely not shy using his voice. Way too many immature stories to share, some not PG…
He picked on me more than anyone else in the kitchen, and I would retaliate back to get even. He was eventually fired. He has always pushed the envelope just to crave attention and get a laugh, like a class clown. Once you get a taste of attention from extremely young girls from his Can Idol appearances, you want more and more of it. Some artists have the exact opposite affect and just want to sing and put out good albums. But many teens/preteens girls love the crazy, wacky, attention-starved, juvenile, bad boy antics, until they grow out of it, which I have no doubt got him through the show up until third place and had a huge following thereafter.
He was there the very last week the restaurant closed down permanently in early June 2012, we spoke a bit and asked him how the food was. We also trained his sister as a GM in Surrey, BC.
He is quite the character for sure, a wild man persona… Hopefully, he can change his ways and come out of this with a better, brand new attitude and treat people, not just women/girls, with respect and be a little more humble and mature. He will definitely have a hard life in prison for sure and will have a huge target on his back no matter where he goes once he gets released. I wish his family all the best in this trying times.

Met him in a bar once, he was very captivating but- I got scared for some reason. Glad I followed my instincts to stay away after that. Met him a few more times and noticed some other red flags too. Only good things to say about the other members of his band though.

Crazy, I met Jacob when I was a teenager. I watched him throughout his Canadian Idol and his first show in London. I was visiting my GP at the walk in clinic and sat down in the waiting room right infront of him. Thinking wow he looks like Jacob, it was him. He had hurt the bottom of his tongue and was seeking medical help before his show. I got his autograph and my doctor didnt know who he was lol. He was charming but I was a shy teenager, when he asked if id be visiting him at the show I said no. He said that was a shame but if i changed my mind there was a meeting after. Im glad I didnt go. But i spent years wishing I had.
