    Conquering the land.
From 820, western Europe experienced insecurity recalling the era of the Great Invasions.
The Vikings attack the coasts of the English Channel and the Atlantic.
They failed in their landing attempts in Flanders and in the Bay of Seine, and attacked the Aquitaine coast as well as the island of Noirmoutier.
Around 830, larger groups regularly ascend the rivers and penetrate deeper and further inland, devastating and plundering mainly churches and monasteries.
The Scandinavians have many anchor points, and numerous islands which serve as their rear bases, which explains the repeated expeditions on all the coasts of the North and Atlantic Seas and raids on the rivers of the ancient empire of Charlemagne.
This empire which will be dislocated from the death of the emperor, but especially after the partition of the empire in 843 with the treaty of Verdun.
We know very little about the events, because the sources are few, and often after the facts related, such as the Danish gesture written around the year 1200, the annals of Bertin whose date we do not know precisely, or the Icelandic sagas dating from the 13th century.
This little video, which tries to follow as well as possible the "gesture" of the Vikings, and to make the share of things between the legend and what the historians tell us, takes you into this story ...
