The history of humanity (world history or universal history) designates the synthetic account of humanity since the appearance of Homo Sapiens in prehistoric times until today.
There are five major periods of human history (for European historians in particular and French in particular, certain "civilizations" not using the same periods (chronological frieze or timeline).
- Prehistory :
from the appearance of humanity, around 3 to 5 million years ago, to the appearance of writing around 3500 BC;
- Antiquity:
from the appearance of writing to the "fall" of the Roman Empire in 476;
- the Middle Age :
from the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 to the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453 or the "discovery" of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492;
- modern times:
from 1453/1492 to the French Revolution in 1789;
- modern period :
from the French Revolution in 1789 to today ...
