A Message From President Shafik

- President Minouche Shafik delivered a message from Columbia’s Morningside campus to students on Friday, May 3.
“Every one of us has a role to play in bringing back the values of truth and civil discourse that polarization has severely damaged,” she said. “Here at Columbia, parallel realities and parallel conversations have walled us off from other perspectives. … Working together, I know we can break down these barriers.
The issues that are challenging us-the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, antisemitism, and anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bias-have existed for a long time. And Columbia, despite being a remarkable institution, cannot solve them singlehandedly. What we can do is be an exemplar of a better world where people who disagree do so civilly, recognize each other’s humanity, and show empathy and compassion for one another.
We have a lot to do, but I am committed to working at it, every day and with each of you, to rebuild community on our campus.”
The trust you have broken with your students will never be repaired.
what is the current situation with the protests ?
Which students? The ones harassing or the ones being harassed
as an Egyptian
shame on you Minouche
you are a disgrace to academia.
go to Palestine and fight
she talks like hypocrite
She's not genuine.
@@Crystallis6222 Agreed!
well she has a lot of woke nazis jew haters as students to deal with
A lying hypocrite.
She sounds grounded
She seriously hasn't resigned yet? She will end up being asked out by whoever might have lobbied her in initially anyway
Seriously, when you call the police for the students before, were they occupying Hamilton hall??!
Yeah lol
I like to name it Hind's Hall.
Did that disrupt your stupid protest?
RESIGN SHAFIK
you can talk normally, but why does she have to resign? She just said the right thing.
Step down madam
Grand ma
she even cancels the commencement without informing the students 😩
How sad, with the role that you are blessed with, can respond with such little insight. Your statement, written no doubt by someone else, are full of platitudes. This is a complex situation and your empty words fail to recognize that complexity. A nice smile and a surplus of hand gestures won't solve the situation you need to address with intelligence not empty statements. From listening to you, and listening to my daughter, a student at Columbia, I now understand you are not up to this. Do yourself, Columbia and it's brave students, a favor and step down. Today.
Resign now.

she's definitely gonna look at this comment.
Boycott Columbia!
Get out of this country...
why a boycott? She said it was supposed to be a the place of community it's not supposed to be a place of violent things like what would you like this to happen, do you want this at your house because it will not be fun
@@fanta3702 too late. For someone like you who doesn't know the history of Columbia. This is the second time this happened by the uni in the last 50 years. Of course you live in a free world to do as you please.and to do as I please......is that a problem? Do you have a problem with that? Well if so, it's your problem. And if you believe one word she said. You're naive. Have a lovely day.
@@nobo764 maybe because I live in America maybe makes a little different maybe because colleges are investing into arms. but I want to just one thing if you want a boycott one School you have to boycott all of them. I can't do one. but also if you boycott it, it could lead to economical damage.
The embodiment of 'shame'
An alum here. History will judge you harshly and forever.
This woman singlehandedly ignited the worldwide college protests.
sold out her students, sold out her staff to make investors happy. awful spineless person
This address was written by the Israel Public Relations Bureau
You called the police on your students 10 days before they occupied the hall
They set up tents on private property and threatened and harrassed other students.
She should have reacted quicker.
Obviously I made the right choice Not going to Columbia Law School. Absolutely Shameful President Shafik!!
what do you want her to do? She said the right thing and that's the rule to the college. every other college has the same type of rules so if you have something about that, go to every single other college and shame every other person
Resign first bcoz u didnt take any action
Sending the policy to beat students?!?
you're not beating the students or not assaulting them it put other students in their faculty people people in other lives. also, it's a rule of every other college. so if you want it like put this in a comment, you have to do research.
Shameless woman
She is Hamas sympathizer.
And she peacefully arrested the emcamping students!!
I'm surprised she didn't try to have them killed e.g. Kent state
She didn't protect students. She wanted to protect her position. School's priority should be ' Students safety'. She should have tried to talk with them first not using brutal police crackdown. She is not qualified to work at school.
Unless She resignS She has NOTHING TO SAY..
She should’ve been fired yesterday
why should she be fired? She didn't really do nothing bad put yourself in her feet. What would you feel like?
Huh. Who got hurt before the police showed up?
1968 Columbia University protests reborn!
Wrong. Get a refund for your grade school diploma.
no one asked the Palestinian students how they are supposed to "feel safe" and "welcomed" at a University that invests in and profits off of the muder of their relatives. this is shameful.
I seriously don’t understand since when the president of a 2:08 prestigious university in US could have so little research experiences and credentials. Since when! One and only one 3:05 widely cited paper and almost just a copy of another paper?!
Ok got it,
It means we have to do more,
Fire her!
There are those that protest against a genocide and then everyone else. The Columbia students are on the right side of history and I wish you would risk whatever privileged position you think you have by supporting them.
They are supporting Hamas. You know, the ones who _actually_ called for genocide against Israel.
They’re not speaking _against_ genocide_ but in favour of one.
Step down

Higher education is officially a fn joke 😅
What a mouthful.
Who would have thought that equity, diversion and inclusion would turn into uniformity/conformity.
" you the students paid a high price " yeah almost 100k a year.
Do Not Step Down...
STAND STRONG 💪🏻
Howard Stern was caught in rain.
I wrote to Minouche onJanuary 25, 2024 to urge dismissal of Columbia students who used the chemical weapon 'skunk' against peaceful protestors.I never got an answer and understand nothing was done. Columbia failed to lead, failed to provide a structure for protest. It instead outlawed peaceful groups and failed to adequately denounce a criminal act. This dull and overall egregious approach at the very beginning led to student unrest that could have been prevented as it was at other schools, for instance, Brown. I include the relevant text of my letter below.
Minouche also fails in this vid to address the valid and central students' call for university divesting from supporting the Israeli/US war machine. I participated in anti-apartheid protests as an undergrad; our school divested and apartheid ended. These students (or shall I say 'customers') of Columbia deserve an answer on divestment, not just silence. Kudos to student protesters and shame on the 'grownups' who appear more concerned about their own enrichment and bloated endowment than free speech and the ideals of humanism.
Here is the text of my Jan 25, 2024 letter:
As a SIPA alum with strong Jewish ties, I was shocked to read (in The New York Times) about the treatment of peaceful protestors calling for Columbia to divest from investments in Israeli companies etc until an end to what South Africa, human rights organizations and the international community at large are identifying as a 'genocide' against the people of Gaza.
I urge full investigation, dismissal and prosecution of those who employed 'skunk' -- a chemical weapon with potential long-term health impacts -- against fellow students on the steps of Low Library this past week. This act crossed a very real line and must be strongly denounced by the entire university community.
I urge you to allow such protests and forego this 'banning' of mainstream groups including Jewish Voices for Peace - a peaceful group that represents the views of a growing number of American Jews who do not identify or ally with the state of Israel. I believe Columbia banning such groups and denying normal support for such 'free speech' student-led actions led to this egregious situation where a chemical weapon was used against peaceful protestors.
I further urge Columbia, as occurred under South Africa's apartheid, to join with other universities to divest of Israeli investments until a peaceful solution brokered by an international, hopefully UN-led coalition, is agreed to by both 'sides'.
I acknowledge Israel's right to exist just as I acknowledge the need for a Palestinian state. The current leaders' of both should be thrown out as they are responsible for feeding an unnecessary and larger regional conflict. The US and Europe created this festering wound and must take the lead to start a healing once and for all. The role of Columbia and other universities is to lead by example -- facilitating civil debate through structured dialog and diplomacy despite high passions all around. This is the way of peace.

From the river to the sea, not one dime of tax payer money to Columbia or its students.
nono no I’m a 63 Yr old woman from MT get over your egos!
So you listened enough before calling NYPD on your own students? Step down. NOW.

As Columbia alumni, I ask you and all your trustees to resign……..

Columbia University should allow students their 1st Amendment Rights
Old lady
When people started cosplaying Hamas you should have taken a firmer hand as the administration. Instead you sissy footed it to the point the cops needed to be called. This started with the safe rooms from trigger words. Im not saying bring back the rulers either. If a micro aggression sets you off, please talk to someone. Meantal health is important.
Ppl have a first amendment right to cosplay whoever TF THEY WANT. If you can’t handle free speech go somewhere else.
Sacrifice the flower of the nation on the altar of greed and you will have no fruit in the future.
President Shafik, you are put in a hard place to protect free speech AND fight hate speech, to allow students to voice their opinions AND protect the wellbeing of your campus. I feel for your tough position where (in this case) middle ground means you cannot win from either side.
Its hard to ignore the haters, but know they are not the ones who support your integrity or your responsibility as President. May your inner strength grow from all this.
I don’t think she was prepared for such a huge complex issue -
100% agreed

President Shafik should be fired immediately. I am surprised how she got into this position.

Resign now
It's not Hamilton Hall anymore, use the new name
She made up charges against innocent students then had them violently arrested, made the homeless. She is such a disgrace. What university president does that to their own students? She is not competent to be in her role.
To step down would be her most noble act and would be damage control for her dignity.
You broke the students' hearts, shame on you

What did the student president do to quel the start of the protest. Nothing. Sending fear into Israel students.
GET HER OUT
I find it really hard to believe her
The Islamophobic hatered is so obvious in the comments
"Every one of us has a role".....starting with not calling the police on our students -- much better to try to be on the right side of history!
Educational Spaces are for learning. These CANNOT become political hotspots which does not take time in becoming infernos, tornadoes, volcanoes.....all of that which destroys the purpose of the Educational Space, for which parents sacrifice their savings to send their children to learn in an environment which promotes discipline and not mindlessness in the name of freedom. Education is costly, and therefore it's a Business, and it is the duty of this Business, this Institution (or any Institution) to NOT allow it's Teachers and Students, respectively, to engage in activities that are not meeting the objectives of the Institution, within the premise and a radius of the Institution. Students with Teachers are free to have conversations across various topics, but the Educational Space CANNOT be allowed to be taken over by a Protest Culture and impose itself on the other Students and most importantly, the Institution itself.
In such situations, for Institutions to rely upon the 'sweetness of tolerance' and for it to 'plead and urge' protestors to stop the protest, is not only playing blind, but exhibits disrespect towards the Institution. Those managing the Institution CANNOT be seen vacillating and being indecisive in taking action to bring back the order and decorum in it's working. The Institution must WANT to take the required action against miscreants and not be seen as being lenient against such acts of bullying. The Institution MUST NOT feel shy to exhibit it's authority in such situations, and not uselessly engage with such elements which are vitiating the atmosphere of an Educational Space.
Whatever has happened in Columbia University and all other American universities, is a complete failure of the Institutional Authority to take decisive action in evicting these protestors from the campus. This shows that the Institutional Authorities are themselves involved or are incompetent to take action or were under pressure to not take action. All of which just shows that American Universities are in a state of mess and have lost their Educational Values by allowing themselves to be taken over by a pack of protestors. In brief, American Universities are UNSAFE which promotes bullies and bullying.

She did absolutely nothing wrong.
