    🏡 Episode 4: The 200 square ft Micro Cabin shell tour - inside and out!
    Welcome to our 30 day off-grid build for October of 2023! We’re assembling sustainable, affordable, off-grid systems to provide for the 5 basic physiological needs for 2-4 humans: Creative shelter, fresh water, green sanitation, clean energy, and local food are things that make the world truly better and more enjoyable. Beyond having fun building all of this and sharing it with you, one big goal for this project is to clearly illustrate how creative & sustainable solutions can solve our housing affordability crisis and free young people to avoid working paycheck to paycheck to survive in our modern economy. We need a fresh vision for living well! Many people are seeking a closer connection to nature, a slower pace of life, an affordable lifestyle, a sustainable lifestyle, and freedom from being indentured to our modern economic system. Mostly though, we just love building off-grid systems!
    In episode 4 the micro cabin (shed shell) is delivered, we're touring the micro cabin shell, moving the IBC rain tanks, adding a small deck, and reviewing the future system plans.

    Had the idea of an outdoor plexiglass hallway, lined with with flowers, leading to an outhouse. It was meant for a composting setup, with the added plus of stargazing, especially in the desert.

    a cheaper alternative to a raiser or murphy bed would be to use a bed mat like they do in Japan, during the day you roll it up and tuck it away and for bedtime just roll it back out again. believe marketers like calling it a Japanese futon. of course, you can always go with things like a cot that folds up but cots aren't as comfortable for a lot of people and are often built for camping grade and thus don't have as long of a constant use life to them (though still something you might want for a guest). Another sleeping option is to hang up a hammock, this can also be stashed away easily during the day and is an interesting option not many have tried but some people really enjoy. The Batchlers couch sleep method can be done as well if you plan to fit in a couch.

    • @LandLabs

    Im confused on cabin position. If the front double doors are facing south how are the water tanks on the north side in full sunlight? Wouldnt you want minimum light to avoid algea and other organic growth?

    • @LandLabs
      @LandLabs 10 месяцев назад

      We’ll install covers for the IBC tanks. The cabin is facing south, but it’s aimed at the lake too which is a bit south east - it’s not dead south. The small profile of the cabin allows a lot of sunlight around it

    Its good but you could have simply built a cob cabin at the half of the cost + further modifications and extensions is fluid when it comes to cob home. More over when you are on a self sustainable journey purchasing a cabin made by someone else make no sense.

    • @acornlandlabs
      @acornlandlabs  10 месяцев назад +3

      Hey! Good questions.
      So cob cabins are not portable. We wanted ours to be.
      Buying a prefab cabin is far more doable and seemingly possible for most individuals. This series is meant to show the steps someone can take to live a more affordable lifestyle. Naturally there’s always a few things that could be done even more affordably, but then you start making it harder which turns many people away.
      Financing a shed to convert into a micro cabin is a great first step. Down the road with more experience people can get more comfortable with making more creative shelters by hand.
      Your point is correct! We are just all about making the first steps to living this way as approachable as possible for newcomers.
