This seriously is one of the sounds of my childhood. I loved watching the filter flo action. I would sit there with the lid up and just watch the wash.
@packardnut That's no lie. We had one of these old GE's when I was a kid, I think ours was a 1981 or 1982 model. It had the mini basket and filter-flo. It was an awesome washing machine and I loved it. I agree with you, the new washers of today aren't half the machines the old ones were, and they don't interest me like the old ones do. Why they can't make appliances like this today, I don't understand. I say bring back the chrome, style and quality!
This washer brings back so many memories of my childhood. My grandmother had one almost exactly like this. i used to love watching it run. I remember though that the little holes in the filter-flo basket became clogged from her putting the detergent in it at the start of the cycle. During agitation, the water would flow up and over the filter-flo basket instead of being dispersed in the tiny holes at the bottom of the basket.
One gallon of white vinegar, on largest water level, and no clothes in the washer, and Hot, water setting, with warm rinse and on Normal cycle at the very beginning, would have helped to Unclog the holes, and repeated once every month.
One gallon of white vinegar, on largest water level, and no clothes in the washer, and Hot, water setting, with warm rinse and on Normal cycle at the very beginning, would have helped to Unclog the holes, and repeated once every month.
@peeweecee If I could go back in time, I'd buy up all of the older GE washers, too. I don't know why they discontinued these. I loved the filter flo GE washers, my mom had one as a kid and I was fascinated by it.
One of the best washers GE ever made.... dont make them like this anymore... the lint filter was one of the best options to remove excess lint from the washtub ensuring that lint wasnt distributed on clothing ... also less accumulation of lint in the lint trap in the dryer.... One of the best washers ever...!!!
We had a filterflow as the second washer I remember. I remember being very disappointed that with the filter in place, you couldn't see much washing action, and the little balls of lint that collected in the filter reminded me of a cat's hairball, and thereby grossed me out. (They still do...ironically enough, 35 years later).
Just observing how quick the agitation is in this washer . These are considered classics but people call the DD Kenmore /Whirlpool washers "shredders". Go figure . I never had anything damaged in the two DD washers I owned . These GE machines are classic nonetheless. Saw my share of these growing up in the 70's and early 80's
@Gaygarious I'm with you, I wish they would bring these back, also. I loved the older GE washing machines like this one in the video. They had quality and style and were built to last. A lot of this new stuff they make today isn't worth hauling home.
Innovation race was one of the best things happened to home devices, until 1980's. Then, they figured out the way to make the things disposable, instead of being well made. In cars, in appliances, in tools, in toys.
I miss my mom's 1980s GE filter folw waher I grew up watching that wahser be used it never needed repair at all. I remember being very noisy specially when it comes to a stop I will buy one used filter flo washer I own a whirpool from the 80s
That is the Jet-Swirl fabric softener dispenser. Notice when the spinning stops no softener deposits onto the clothes. It is rinsed gradually into the water when the filter flo water splashes up against it. Pretty cool idea.
that machine is in exceptional mechanical order! most of those had a lot of transmission and motor bearing noise in them.. esp during high speed spin.. we had the same machine as a kid only in a 2 speed model... only difference I remember is when ours was set for high speed agitate.. it would first start in slow then after a few seconds shift to high speed.. also seemed to jump up to full spin speed a little faster than yours.. but then i was a little kid and our machine was almost new
I agree with PWC except for one thing: these machines "ate socks" and clogged the pump so often I wouldnt be a bit suprised if thats where the expression came from. From my experience the most reliable GE automatic washers ever made were the ones with the one speed clutch and two port pump. I'll bet there are still a bunch of em out there in service
For update for fellow did video are been for years now i found a 1968-69 one at a refurbs. place sales fellow redid paint new motor clutch n runs like new as was bought.....very nice he sales them for 300 dollars...
Tuthill, I will do a video of the 3 different speeds once I get a part to repair the transmission with. Right now I only have medium and normal. I want to do it with all 3 if possible
its not reversing, the pattern catches the lights in the room which are flashing 60 times a second and then the patterns seem to change direction at higher speeds

Utterly Useless Undergarments for Cattle. I like the sound of that . Undergarments that keep the utters warm so the milk doesn't freeze .... I think we are on to something here
I had the exact same model in the early 70's that included the mini basket and jet swirl the color is avacado thanks for posting.
This seriously is one of the sounds of my childhood. I loved watching the filter flo action. I would sit there with the lid up and just watch the wash.

I have a GE washing machine from ~1993 with all of these same features. One of the last ones made.

Old washers are a lot cooler than the new ones
@johnr556 Why they did away with these older design GE washers is beyond me. I loved them, too. I was fascinated by my mom's old GE filter flo washer.
That washer really washes the clothes. I want one.
I love the sound of vintage GE washers when they kick on!
Wow what a fantastic washing machine
my 84 makes that noise, genuine GE alright
Great washing machine, I love it.

Why can't we have lint filters again?
5610winston Dryers have lint filters. Back in the day there was no dryer lint filters
MAN those old GE spin cycles were powerful!!!!

What are the accessories installed in the agitator and how they work?

Is that a light on the top of the washing machine?
Yes @Sethbower11 In Those Days Washers &Dryers Were Classy.
Curious to know if this washer is still going strong today, and if you had any maintenance work done on it and/or any parts replaced?
ge was the best brand back then :)
I plan on doing an edited video with all speeds once I get it working. Obviously, yes, you will ruin a clutch switching it during a cycle. :-)
That would be the filter. On top of that later in the video is the fabric softener dispenser.
For update for fellow did video are been for years now i found a 1968-69 one at a refurbs. place sales fellow redid paint new motor clutch n runs like new as was bought.....very nice he sales them for 300 dollars...
used to have that in our cottage :D
Hey, what's the spin RPM on this machine? Looks pretty fast, faster than a Whirlpool/Kenmore, but can't really tell by how much.
What is the thing on top of the filter flo, and what does it do?
nice video thanks!
Oh how I’d love to find one of these as opposed to the garbage we have to get now!
Do you still have this washer?
it seems like the water level wasn't as high on the rinse cycle as it was on the wash cycle.
Why don't the manufacturers re-evaluate some of the "old" mechanisms and bring them back?
Tuthill, I will do a video of the 3 different speeds once I get a part to repair the transmission with. Right now I only have medium and normal. I want to do it with all 3 if possible
Where's the softener dispenser?
What dosthat top pan do?
If you look at the spin long enough, it seems to spin one direction, then the next, then reverse again.
its not reversing, the pattern catches the lights in the room which are flashing 60 times a second and then the patterns seem to change direction at higher speeds
I would like to see the motor and all
uhh the fabric softener dispenser
