I Met Gary in the early '90s at a tournament in Livingston, TX. Gary was on the "backside" having the Mercury crew install a new lower unit - (lots of BIG stumps in Lake Livingston). Anyways, I stopped, introduced myself, and talked with Gary for several minutes. He is as nice of a professional fisherman as I've ever met. Rick Clunn won the event on several types of shallow diving cranks. As an afterthought- I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet Bryan Kerchal. Talked w/him for a while. As we all know Bryan Kerchal was killed in a plane crash only months later.
I had a cousin pass from covid last year and I inherited his jig making kit and wow its cool. 10 do it molds, lead pot, the powder coating gadget made from pvc an aquarium pump and coffee filters. Every color of powder coat paint under the sun. 6 colors of living rubber and 5 plano boxes of silicone, a jig tying vice. 50 lbs of lead ingets… I haven’t started tying them with wire or braid. I have a tool that will open a jig rubber and I can get silicone and living rubber too. I really like the flashaboo tensil that are in a lot of jigs now. I found 15 different colors of that stuff on a fly tying site. I didn’t like it when I bought it but its so random it makes jigs more natural in my opinion. Not to mention it really puts off flash on sunny days. I love a skirt i make I named Crown Royal. Purple silicone with gold flake and dark green living rubber. I think it’s called mardi gras.
Been doing this for 20 years. Where did I learn it? From you Mr. Klein. Good stuff. I pretty much learned how to jig fish from you good sir. Thank you!
When you see a seasoned pro with a bunch of 3700 Thins lined up with tabs all organized and it reminds you of your EXACT SETUP....you know you must be doing something right! By the way, I even have that exact vise! 🤣
Even though he has a giant jig line out with Berkley. Anyone can go to tackle warehouse and buy really good naked jigs from boss in a lot of styles and they are not expensive. Silicone tabs are all over eBay. They have kits that include rubber bands for jigs the plastic tool Gary was using and 15 or 20 different colored tabs. Like 20 tabs for each color. I don’t know if you watch Randy Blaukat. The intuitive angler is his channel. He has a line of what he calls old school jigs he charges $10 a piece for that i can make from scratch for $2.50 a jig.
Gary Klein we love u in Louisiana , I remember when locals said Gary ran down camp canal wide open in Venice , Louisiana and one of there guys that owned a camp there shot a gun up in the air during his BASS tournament here , this is just what I heard not sure , too try to stop him , it’s an idle zone
Where is the best place to purchase that type of jig vise? I see the fly fishing vice at Cabellas at a reasonable price but I dont think they will handle the larger size hooks.
