  • Come fly fishing with me for a couple hours in in Plumas County's Lost Sierra! This video is about the Middle Fork of the Feather River, just outside the towns of Graeagle and Portola in Northern California, which are about an hour north of the Truckee/Lake Tahoe area. This fishery is often overlooked, and is certainly underappreciated, as an option for when the Truckee and Little Truckee get busy, for those times when you want a bit of a change, and just in general as a great place to fish. As you can see, the river is full of rainbow trout who will happily take a fly, and many of them are in the 12" range (though there are bigger fish in there for sure, as well as a healthy population of smaller fish). And, as a bonus, the river is easy to access from the road. I hope you enjoy it and thank you as always for watching.

Seems like everyone was out in the rain on Saturday, including me. It was nice that the rain seemed to dissuade other less adventurous anglers.

I'm always amazed how many people won't fish in the rain. Sometimes bad weather makes the best fishing. Not always, but sometimes--the trick is you gotta get out there and see what it's going to be. There's so much good gear out there now (and it's so well make that you can get really high quality used stuff in great shape at steep discounts) that a spot of rain really shouldn't put anyone off. I mean, harden up people!

Rain, shine, or hail, that's some great fishing.

For sure. It would have been wise to put my raincoat in my ruck, but wisdom has never been my strong suit. You'd think I'd learn, but the next time it rains I'm guessing I'll be wet and my raincoat will be all nice and cozy in the back of my car. Thanks so much for watching!

As a Plumas county native I can attest, trout opportunities abound. If a stream runs year round, it will have wild trout in it.

Those streams and rivers are really under-rated!

Thanks for this and all of your vids. You're not giving away any secrets, any interested fly fisher knows about the Middle Feather, probably tried it but got lured away by the glamor of the Truckee. I tried the Middle Feather once and had minimal luck so haven't been back. Videos that inform and teach are a huge value and have kept me fishing. Looking forward to part 2.

Thanks! I try to help people find options, but I also don't want to do aaaalll the work for folks. I have Part 2 in the hopper but some other stuff will come out first (that's how my ADHD mind works).

That's one of my worst habits too! My two biggest fish today, I put it to em a little much and popped them off.

But it's SO HARD to balance the excitement and desire to land them with needing to be patient. I always feel like I was patient enough in just hooking it I don't want to delay my gratification any longer. I guess that's why we never stop moving through the learning curve.

I lived there for 2 years and never caught a single fish on that river 😢

It feels to like this, so please know it's an emotional support like. Get back out there! I think it really fluctuates with weather, as it tends to heat up pretty fast and then the fish all skedaddle. Cooler days is key.

Let's keep these spots underappreciated. We dont need attention drawn to our lesser known and fished rivers especially rivers with only wild trout populations. RUclips has a way of ruining fisheries over time

Typical selfish fisherman. What makes you think you should be able to enjoy these public places and nobody else should? I say tell everyone every spot you know. There’s plenty of places…funny you think this place is some secret too😂

    • @bssaassin1900

@@guaporeturns9472 it's not selfish its wise. I never excluded anyone from the river anyone's allowed to enjoy it I'm just saying it doesn't need extra attention drawn to it let people find it themselves. I've watched good spots get trashed with beer cans, graffiti on trees and a reduction in fish productivity because too many people and reckless people come and overcrowd the same spot. Like it or not fishing and hunting is one of those things that the less people know about a particular area the better it is. Now if enjoy scenes like the lower American by the dam with snaggers lined up shoulder to shoulder or lake pardee where people are casting lines over each other or people snagging spawning trout and steelhead be my guest.
