Ringing the back eight down at Chester Cathedral

  • Chester Cathedral's lovely back eight being lowered from outside the tower, where the bells sound fantastic! Easy to ring but with very challenging acoustics inside the tower which is a great shame. The tower was built in the early 70s after it was decided the central tower could no longer support a ringing peal. The 8th of the old ring of ten still hangs in its frame, weighing about 18cwt. It was cast in 1606 by Oldfield.

At least here the organ is in another building! It must be possible to get more sound into the ringing chamber. The bells are well worth hearing, I think they've a tremendous sound.

I quite like it actually. It's got a nice ground floor lobby area with loos and facilities and then a spiral staircase into the ringing room. It looks very odd with the traditional peal boards in a modern setting!

Well if they did it would probably collapse! They stabilised and strengthened it several times but in the end were forced to build something new. Better than no bells!

Yes, although on balance I think Liverpool's acoustics are actually clearer!

Lucky, when I went in July 2017 they left them up at backstroke

BrickyBoy they did on Saturday too! You can hear more inside the tower now although they're not exactly clear still.

SrWilson3s Would you rather they put the bells back in the central tower? If they did, the tower would collapse because it cannot support a ring of 12. Still, it would be good anyway if they were able to. I still like the Addleshaw Tower.

I like the Addleshaw Tower. I have built it on Minecraft.

The tower is not far off being able to support a ring, the external structure is certainly sound enough it's just the inner floors that needed to be repaired. It would have been far less expensive to carry out the repairs rather than build a new tower but you only have to look at the name of the tower to see who wanted it to be done.
