    The reason why I refuse to call somebody like Shad an „artist“ is because he clearly has no eye or even interest in the soul and personality of an artwork. He thinks his AI looks „better“ than his hand drawn stuff and doesn‘t even seem to REALIZE that the AI-characters lack all the personality of his originals. All he sees is how many colors and shades the new artwork has. It looks more detailed, therefore it‘s „better“. It‘s the same soulless, disengaged attitude towards art that makes people day the CGI „Lion King“ movie looks strictly „better“ than the original, because it looks more „realistic“.
    If you have even a passing interest in art, you do NOT look at art THAT simplistic.
    Shad has a basic knowledge of how to draw. There is a fundation there to build on. But he doesn‘t care enough for the craft to develop it. Which makes him NOT an artist.

    • @noagolden

      While I agree with your overall point, I believe everything you pointed out just doesn't make Shad a *curious* artist. that is a tired and withered form artists can take IMO, but it's still valid.

  • @eda230bbs2

    One point my friend and shad seems to also be making is, that when you have sufficient skill, you can just generate an image and "just fix it". Which i dont see why that would work, since to develop these skills, you still have to work and the best way to train is to actually draw. And if you go through the effort of learning how to draw, wouldnt it be just easier to draw it yourself? With your own style, having control over the thing you're drawing, instead of using an AI slot-machine-like system of rolling for good enough image, to just start fixing it? I would argue the fixing would take more effort than doing it yourself

    • @liljatupsu

      Image editing is a whole different skill set from drawing/painting, and lacks all the most fun parts of the art making process. Plus matching the weirdly smooth texture of AI imagery with manual editing seems like a hard task

    • @liljatupsu
      @liljatupsu 9 месяцев назад +5

      Also I've seen a ton of people claim AI "finally allowed them to express the vision in their heads". How vague was their vision that an AI could replicate it when I have a hard time getting the colors and composition to match my mental image even when I have full control over the image?

  • @BrandonPilcher

    IMO, if Shad really had an artistic drive, he would continue producing drawings like his old ones instead of relying on AI. His old drawings may not be flawless, but they have more character than the AI generations.

    • @CharlieNoodles
      @CharlieNoodles 9 месяцев назад +7

      I strongly suspect with Shad that he got to a point with his art where to get better was harder and required more effort than he was willing to put in. Combined with that is his inflated ego, where he believes he’s brilliant at everything he does. So to solve the incongruity between his actual artistic abilities and his perception of his artistic abilities, he convinced himself that he “doesn’t enjoy drawing” and gave up. Then AI came along, a low skill, low effort application that makes him feel like a pro because it produces results superficially look really good. So it strokes his ego in that he can fool himself into believing he “created” the image without requiring actual effort or ability that he lacks.

    Ai art generators seem like they could have really interesting potential down the road in certain applications. They also seem like they could be greatly abused in a market where it can already be really hard to make a living.
    The Shad thing, to me, feels profoundly stupid (for the record, i think he is reasonably intelligent) is that he has all the info to know and acknowledge what this tool is and what it means for the wider artist ecosystem. His brother (jazza) IS by any metric, a bona-fide artist, regardless of what anyone thinks of his (Shad) credentials.
    All it would take on his part is to properly recognize the issues and the limitations and to actually be honest about the skill involved, and most of the controversy around this would just evaporate.
    Instead of doubling down and thru his very own video about it, show us that, at best, it's the equivalent of fine tuning a Google search. With basic Photoshop skills thrown in.
    As presented, he is an AI art director, not an AI artist. Though he put work into it, the image is not truly his work and can never be.
    To me, this all boils down to this; he found a cool toy that he enjoys messing around with and is annoyed that some have rained on his parade for using it. It likely doesn't help that his brother is a wildly successful artist with multiple channels and a whole studio of people working for him while he is the medieval enthusiast with a plywood castle in his back yard. (Tbf, he seems successful in his own right, with a thriving channel and a novel.. or 2? Under his belt. It's just not on the same level)
    And now he's dug his heels in as some sort of FU to his detractors

      From what ive gathered. Plenty of artists would've been happy to contribute to the training models. But only if the people supporting it didn't start off by saying they'll replace artists and stealing their work.
      Imagine how much better the current models would be if artists were to help give new data for the program. Even if artists were commissioned to create specific things. Shad goes on about "creativity" "artistic eye" "knowledge" "illustration ability" "process" yet has shown none. There's no roughs, there's no sketches, there's no inking, there's no coloring. The anatomy and proportions are seemingly trying to keep up with that weirdness. For someone who claims that his skills in anatomy and character art are "without a doubt" on a "professional level", this is just embarrassing.

    Shad keyed in what he wanted Ai to find for him...the Super Girl photos etc. However, Shad did NOT draw those images. He didn't draw the pose, the flowing hair, the ripples in her red skirt and cape, the Superman insignia...NOTHING. When I use to make Tekken fanart wallpapers, I never claimed the Tekken characters as my own. It was fun to graphic design, but all I added were effects from brushes in various photoshop apps, blurs, filters etc. Editing and playing with filters isn't the same as illustrations.

    As a total non artist myself, it's funny seeing the purity spiral resulting in removing the artist "title" from people using AI tools.
    I think a lot of people are angry because since the tool is much better, it's harder for people like me, who don't know better, to aknowledge how much better they are compared to the mediocre user of AI tools... add to that the fact that demand for digital art will diminish a lot, and you will see a lot of people getting culled from the market.
    I fear that outside of the art ecosphere, most people don't reallly weigh up the pros and cons the same, and they hold more general esteem for "manual" art compared to digital art anyway.

    There's no reason anyone should limit the use of such AI tools or act like they're bad, they add yet another enhancement to modern digital art, that can be used, or not. It's up to the artist.
