I'm excited and confused at the same time. On the one hand, his sound is of course unique, he is probably the only living pianist who can produce this magical sound in all voices. And in some moments his phrasing is fantastically beautiful. On the other hand, what a slow tempo that it's actually no longer a waltz. Rubati that almost come to a standstill and at times seem a bit, sorry, tasteless, as well as some of his added notes. One is torn between Pletnev as an artist and the work of Chopin, the work that Novaes, for example, played so convincingly. Pletnev's playing simply lacks the harmonic balance between freedom and strictness here, in my opinion, a balance which was essential in Chopin's own playing and which is so difficult to achieve. Pletnev sounds like he is playing around with this Waltz but not taking it seriously. I almost wonder if he was bored with the work, even though there should be no reason for it because to play Chopin's music really well is incredibly difficult, and he himself must know that.
Thank you Marjan Ivanovski for this video of the GENIUS of our age; Maestro Mikhail; Pletnev. It is always a gift to hear him.
