  • The Penguin translation of Matsuo Basho's travelogues, including "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" (ISBN 9780140441857), said to be his masterpiece. Basho, writing in the 17th century, is considered the foremost haiku poet. He liked to include the haiku poems he composed on his journeys in his travelogues.

    Haiku are lovely,
    Reading them eases my mind,
    Writing them does too!

If I had to choose between reading the works of Shakespeare or Basho for the rest of my life I pick Basho every time. Old ponds, travel-worn satchels and horse piss far more compelling than Hamlet and the old boy uses 90% less words to gravitate the weight of them. Thank you for digging deep on this.

Let's hope things don't come to that, though!

Really useful thanks. I've been deep diving Basho this year. Also renku and found Steven Carter's work invaluable.
