Sad to learn today of the passing of this marvellous man. I met him once only briefly after the Monument show at Newcastle City Hall in 1983.

@@marcusoroberts It was a slightly bizarre thing. During 'The Voice' when Chris is left as the last person playing before taking up sticks to play Simmons pads with the rest of the band, as soon as he'd taken off his bass he threw it from stage right to offstage left, perhaps expecting a roadie to catch it. Which, no roadie being that daft, no-one did. I asked him why; he just shrugged and said it was on the spur of the moment.

@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx Brilliant story, thanks for sharing. I vaguely remember this happening, and in fact I believe he chucked his grey Ibanez bass offstage on more than one occasion. Great stuff!

RIP Chris you were the sanity that kept the band together and able to produce that classic Ultravox sound.

Yes I totally understand that. He was such an amazingly cool guy. Inspirational and influenced me very much. Still in shock and disbelief.

We’ve lost so many great people in our lifetimes, family and friends, sports and tv personalities, movie stars, and then music legends, so very many, some far too young like Freddie and George. For some time I was relieved that we’d lost nobody from my top ten bands and artists. All of Ultravox and John Foxx, Stevie, Robin, were all still with us. Depeche Mode. The Blue Nile. talk talk. Kraftwerk. OMD. Numan. Sylvian and Japan. The Cure…..then one by one, bad news. Mark Hollis. Florian Schneider. Almost lost Malcolm from OMD but thankfully saved but had to retire. Mick Karn. Andrew Fletcher. But then, the unthinkable happened, already deeply saddened by the aforementioned losses, and many many more of course, I was devastated by the loss of Chris Allen aka Cross. He was like a favourite uncle. All Ultravox fans and many more family and friends shocked. Knowing Chris’ personality, I just know he would want us to pick ourselves up and crack on, and we will do. For him. But such a very sad loss. 😢

Saw them at Painter's Mill in Maryland, 1983. Chris gave me his pick on the way off stage, still have it to this day, a Fender "Classic Celluloid" medium.

A band I played in during the late 70's did a couple tunes from 'Ha Ha Ha'. This is an interesting glimpse of Mr. Cross Is he using a flanger?
