- An epic story of love and war, intrigue, and betrayal. When Helen and Paris fall in love, they trigger a chain of events that threatens their families and the city of Troy.
The actors were great, but some historical facts are incorrect. I also don't like the "white-facing" of white roles with black people! The Greeks and their gods were white. Nobody would think of filming f.i. Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X or voodoo gods with white actors, but you can do that with Europeans!?
The clothing back then was by no means as colorful and there were no saddles for horses. Women had no rights and were forced into marriage; the Amazons were temporary and a myth. The director sets Troy in the Iliad region of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) to the year 2000 BC. Troy/Troya was destroyed and renamed several times during these centuries and then eventually abandoned, what remained were oral legends. On the side of the violently migrating Sea Peoples from the Black Sea and the northeastern steppes from around the 13th century BC, five Greek tribes arrived in several migration waves in Asia Minor and the Peloponnese (Hellas, today Greece). Including Archaians who either built Mycenae there or destroyed and took over it. Numerous advanced civilizations back then, all the way down to Palestine and Egypt or Creta (Minoans), were completely destroyed by the Sea Peoples. Homer 8th-7th century BC adopted elements of the legends about Troy and the immigration of the Greek tribes and used them to form the epics "Iliad" and "Odyssey", adapting them to the Greeks. But there are no "Greeks" by Homer either, the people of Hellas sieging Troy were called "Archaians", "Danaians" and "Argives" in the epic (after some tribes that took over regions in the Peloponnese). At least the story sticks exactly to Homer, only with a few minor quirks, correctly down to the language style. And so far none of the film adaptations have done that. That's why 👍
In the epic, Paris abducted rather than seduced the beautiful Helena; the reception in Troy/Troya was not that warm, and Cassandra was a seer (who was not believed), not a madwoman. Aeneas escapes to Italy with refugees and founds Rome, Julius Caesar traces his imaginary ancestors back to Aeneas and the goddess Aphrodite/Venus. Menelaus is murdered at home by his wife Clythaimnestra because of the sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenia, who is therefore murdered by her son Orestes. It takes Odysseus twenty years of wanderings to come home as an old man (see Odyssey). I don't remember the murder of a baby at the end of the Iliad, but that was typical for the time. Also the abandonment of unwanted, cursed or deformed newborns by the father. At that historical time there were countless other legends and epics told surrounding the Iliad and the Odyssey.
