    I'd say the ashes of war are so varied and so easy to swap, the game seems to want you to change your strat for a boss that's giving you trouble, rather than respec. Not to mention something people forget a lot are the perfumes, which are VERY powerful. Massively resisting the next blow is a very powerful buff. As for summons, they're an integral part of the game and something you can build for to synergize with, and not just use as distractions.

    Vigor is a contested thing in the community. The problem comes from a lack of communication between the game and the player in regards to what is expected. You may be new to Elden Ring and think to yourself when leveling up "I'm being two shot by this boss... but maybe that's normal?" Couple that with the fact that many players don't realize that the bonus to health scales as you increase your Vigor, and you end up with many players getting frustrated into late game, because their vigor is 25 and they don't understand why the game is so hard.
    You could argue it's the player's fault, but it's difficult to blame someone for something they just don't know. If a player wants to run a glass canon build, they may think 20 Vigor is good enough for that. Not realizing that in late game 35 Vigor is what you should have minimum really.

      I reached Malenia with a full-tank build with the goat armor (the heavyest one in the entire game), with the three-finger shield, all the defensive talismans and a giant hammer (and i was fat-rolling because of this, but since my defense was so high it was a fine trade by me). I struggled not only because of her stupid self-healing mechanic even if i blocked all of her attacks, but because when she used "that move" (when she jumps into the air) i still got one-shotted.
      Even with a build focused only on strenght and defensive stats i was not only unable to kill (for example) Malenia, but the other late game bosses as well. Since they do absurd amount of damage regardless of my armor and i can't dodge their moves well because i was fat-rolling.
      So all of this tells me that the game is balanced not around the armors, but around the dodge/roll mechanic. A game like this is not balanced at all. You can't struggle like hell doing something like 50 tryies on a boss only because you choose a build that the game was offering you, when on the other hand someone completely naked with fast roll does the bosses in 2-3 try. It's absurd.

      @@lordzeref8175 The entire game (as with all Fromsoft games before it) IS balanced around the roll tho, and I don't think anyone has ever tried to argue otherwise.

      @@albstare If the game has something like 20 options available, but you balance the whole game around a single one, then in my opinion is a bad balanced game.
      This should be an RPG game where the stats and your choices around the equipment matters, not a game where if you're completely naked you win so much easier. This is not how an RPG is supposed to be balanced at all.

    • @JBasilix
      @JBasilix 2 года назад +3

      @@lordzeref8175 Oh because in RPGs you never see bosses that demand specific equipment? Most RPGs require you to have some kind of status immunity or very specific tactics for those super hard secret bosses. Malenia is exactly that! A super hard secret boss. And she isn´t even unbeatable with a heavy build. I dunno what you did but I played a heavy roll strength build based around guard counters and I could even block her Waterfowl Dance except for the last part (I like to think it has 3 parts). I was somewhere around lvl 130 - 140 I think. Yes she heals a shitton from it but that was fine because I also hit her quite hard and could always get 2 hits in because of her low stagger.

      @xX-fd2qj 2 года назад +1

      If I may put my vigor frustrations onto text I agree with the 35 Vigor since that seems to be the benchmark to be "merely two shotted at worst" by adjusting your resistances accordingly. But after that point it feels like you need closer to 50 to get into the "three shot" territory which just feels awful when putting in attributes.
      Every point of vigor feels amazing with greatshields but not so much with literally anything else.

  • @turtlepope2249
    @turtlepope2249 2 года назад +13

    The thing is, even if you make a strength build you can use normal weight weapons that scale on strength. At worst the bosses will make you switch weapons but not respec your stats. Unless you have no vigor in which case that's player error. If you want more HP, you're free to respec to have more HP. I personally was fine with 30 vigor and a decent armor but if you want 60 vigor you absolutely have the option

    • @danielkiran8174
      @danielkiran8174 2 года назад +1

      I had 50 vigor and a lot of bosses still 2-hit me. And regarding strength - I feel like ER is one of the worst games for giant weapons. I was very comfortable beating DS 1 and 3 with a giant weapon, but in Elden Ring I felt like a turtle, always being slower than my enemies, not being able to stunlock them or even stop their attack, not being able to take advantage of their openings, etc.
      This game is heavily prioritizing either speed or range, while powerful melee hits are just not worth it. All of the OP melee weapons in this game are either bleed builds or magic builds. It kinda sucks, you have no motivation to use a big weapon.
      As an example - when I encountered Morgott for the last battle with him, I easily beat him with Radan giant swords, cause they are a dual weapon and they have a pretty good DPS. But when I tried to beat him with a giant hammer, I couldn't kill him even in 30 tries, despite getting really comfortable with rolling his attacks. The weapon was actively holding me back.
      And when I fought him with a magic build, I killed him in like 20 seconds. I like magic, but the difference between builds shouldn't be SO big.

  • @RynKen

    I really lucked out by going for a jack of all trades. By the late game, I had access to a lot of options and there was always an answer to a problem; as long I wasn't too prideful to use it; it's also nice to check out a lot more weapons and spells in a single playthrough.
    The downside being that many of the solutions involved a thrusting weapon behind a greatshield so I'm not dodging ten attacks to land one hit against a boss.
    Mogh & Malenia were a nice change of pace simply because they're some of the few humanoid bosses that I actually *had* to engage with while fighting.

  • @Mkronox
    @Mkronox 2 года назад +5

    I dont feel like if the boss needs respec isnt a mistake, for example I ran into a bull boss that was extremely resistant to daggers, and I was a dagger user, I didnt exactly respec, but I was forced to use weapons I wasnt used to and had not leveled up at all, in order to actually do damage and kill it. I think its fine since it makes sense that they are rock monsters resistant to cuts, so I was perfectly fine with it, and I had a rough time but I ended up beating.

  • @KumaNicol
    @KumaNicol 2 года назад +3

    I kinda agree with Dunkey though tbh. I fucking LOVE this gamer but people gotta stop pretending it's a perfect / flawless game. Quite a few bosses lean more towards "Hard" then "difficult" and I am never a big fan of that. Still a 9/10 for certain and one of my top games of all time.
    Also, to be blint, to your posed question of "If you are forced to respec, are you wrong, or the game". And unless it's an absurd outlier like 125 vigor and 10 all other stats or something.. that is absolutely on the game balancing team. They have tons of colossal weapons that are insanely cool and fun, but if they're too slow to effectively work against a multitude of bosses, that is 1000000% on the game. The dev's job is to balance the game so all offered weapons can feasibly clear content, and I kinda find it silly to put it on the player like "how dare you play with that weapon type ypu enjoy, go respec and know it is all your fault!"
    Colossal's are always how I like to play, big meaty 2 handers, and some bosses I got through with pure grit and hatred, and it did not feel fair, nor fun, not even satisfying. I just felt relieved I could go back to hopefully more interesting boss designs.
    Final note, massive agree on normal enemies being a much MUCH bigger issue to me then bosses, spoiler for optional endgame area ahead, but I am currently in Haligtree again and god.. I despise the Guy guarding the statue with the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, I after many deaths, finally killed him, got to the boss with like, 2 flasks left and easily killed it, not using even one flask. Which feels a bit anti climactic IMO, but it is what it is.

      Yes, yes, finally someone gets it.
      This game just isn't balanced for different builds.

      @@Burningdark I agree. Literally the only attack that came close to oneshotting me at 60 VIG + medium armor and the +3 physical talisman was Melenia's grab, and even then that was more like 70%. I could even survive 2 bursts of her Waterfowl dance in a row, which is more than enough because I learned how to dodge the second and third burst every time even when she'd started it right next to me.
      People are bad and/or dumb, nothing new. "I'm getting oneshot by late game stuff no matter what armor I wear" says people with like 40 VIG wearing light armor and no defensive talismans, often while using at least 1 talisman that actively nerfs their defenses.

    about the last point of the video it got me thinking as well. and just for a reminder I like Elden Ring more than any souls game fromsoftware put out. not saying its objectively better but its my personal thought.
    the game….and i admit this. has weird…balancing issues that i dont really know…whats the solution.
    - after numerous nerfs mimic tear is still just an overall great summon
    - bleed is still so powerful,compared to raw dexterity physical build
    - magic is just overall unballanced mess. yes its a better magic system than any of other soulsbourne game but…the builds you can do with magic is so braindead
    i hate comparing this masterpiece of a game with lies of p but i think that game (beside all it’s issues) does build balance so damn well. you can beat the game with starting weapons if you choose to do so (tried this twice both in NG and NG+).
    so changing build is just about playstyle and not really a decission that can fuck you up and forces you to re-spec. you can say building heavy weapon in lies of p isnt really as favorable than fast weapon sure. but the difference isnt like the comparisson of magic build vs melee build in elden ring. and i havent even touch on why the f bow is in the game when magic is an option. 1% player use the build and most bow builds require too much investment anyway.
    what i hope for fromsoft’s future game is adjust these balancing stuff. but thats just my opinion😊

      "How can someone say that the game bosses are not balanced , if you can beat every single one of them without getting hit once???"
      That doesn't mean absolutely anything. Developers can give every boss 900k health and oneshot attacks and someone will still defeat them.
      Sure, no matter how hard the challenge is, you can always find some speedrunner that can beat it no damage with fists only. But games are not made just for speedrunners.
      Average players don't have weeks to learn every fucking move. There is a level of difficulty, that stops being fun and becomes frustrating.

  • @manvslife271
    @manvslife271 2 года назад +1

    I think Joseph Anderson explained the late game difficulty spike better with "This is the only fromsoft game where I felt like i was playing the *wrong* way" so the entire "oh you have to switch your build" or "you have to git gud" is kind of irrelevant, the problem is that it shouldn't make feel like you are playing wrong in the first place. The lategame boses are so overtuned that it feels like you have to respec or obtain overpowered gear to beat them, which shouldn't be something in a game where "everything's viable". In Dark Souls 3, with 40 vig(the softcap) the endgame bosses need 3-4(maybe 5) hits to kill you, compared to elden ring, where you still get two shotted(or one shot because the first hit stuns you into taking the second hit 100% of the time) even with 60 vigor.
