My heart goes out to these poor people who trusted a medical device and their medical "professionals", who irresponsibly used a device without checking on it's peer reviiewed(or lack thereof) studies.This reminds me of the transvaginal mesh crisis. The mesh injured thousands of women, pulled on their organs and cutting through them, while the polypropaline shredded off, requiring a surgeoun to use tweezers to pick out the shreds and caused horrific pain when it shrunk up inside of their bodies, not to mention the health /autoimmune issues many developed.Women even died from it and have had chronic pain ever since and because the lawsuit turned into a class action because there were so many injured, many settled for 2 grand or less. I hope that these people get more for their ongoing pain, suffering and disfigurement, because mesh sufferers sure did not get justice. It is not easy being a guinea pig.
I’m a dentist, and I let out an audible gasp when I saw her after photo. Absolutely tragic.
The inventor of the device should have his license revoked and never allowed to peddle this appliance again. Her dentist that placed the device should also be under review for malpractice.
I don’t normally talk crap about others’ work, but this was blatantly irresponsible on her end.

This is sad! The key is in the name: Anterior GROWTH Guidance Appliance. I knew the moment they said the name that it wouldn't work on an adult. I know because I wore a similar device when I was a kid. I had a horrific overbite. My lower jaw was so far back collapsed inward that I routinely cut the roof of my mouth with my lower teeth. When I was around 10 my parents started taking me to orthodontists to see what could be done. They all wanted to pull a bunch of teeth and break my upper jaw to make it fit with my lower jaw. Fortunately, we found a dentist (a DDS!) who did a little of everything and he was developing a new appliance he called a bionater. He wanted to start me when I was 10 or 11 but my parents couldn't afford it at that time. He was so desperate to try this appliance on me and was afraid we had already missed the best of my growth that he gave them a smoking deal on the fees. He wanted to fix not only the look of my teeth, but the occlusion to. He was 30 years ahead of his time. I was 14 when I got the device (1976), but I was still growing - and that is critical because it was designed to work on the growth points of the mouth (upper and lower jaws). The appliance filled my mouth but was not attached. Unconscious isometric muscle movements helped to widen things and move my lower jaw forward. It was only uncomfortable when I had to widen it each week, and then only for 24 hours. It was more socially uncomfortable because it flopped around in my mouth when I spoke. I. Did. Not. Care! I was desperate to stop the pain of cuts in my mouth and my jaws dislocating when I ate. He figured it would take 4 years of the bionater and 2 to 4 years of braces. But, because I wore the thing at all times (I took it out only to eat, to clean it and to sing in choir) I was in it for only 18 months. Then braces for another 18 months. Then retainers for another 2 years. I was the 4th person he tried this on and was the first success. He had boxes of molds and stacks of albums filled with photos and xrays showing the progress from start to finish. He presented my case at multiple dental conferences. I think I'm even written up in a couple of journals. God Bless Dr. Richard V. Gander of Arvada, Colorado for fixing me.

I cannot believe the dentists that implemented this device didn’t stop as soon as they noticed the complications. The dentist that insisted the huge gaps in her teeth was a part of the process is just as responsible.
Yes, I don't get that either. They can't feign ignorance. They're suppose to be checking on her progress. Xrays would've shown her jaw was not expanding and that her teeth were being dislodged!!

There's also people who had "Extraction/Retraction Orthodontics" (having Premolar teeth taken out for Braces) who say they have long-term issues from it. (E.g facial profile being adversely affected, and upper airway, and jaw joint issues made worse)

'Dr William "Bill" Hang' has talked about the negative effects of Extraction/Retraction in his videos, and says he himself pretty much stopped doing it around 30 years ago.

I feel terrible for these patients, especially the musician, as her job has been affected by this horrible experience. And that woman who said all she has now is pain and surgery and debt. My god, this is horrible. Sadly, nothing can restore them to what they were before this happened, but I hope they win their lawsuits and I hope they are able to get relief for their physical pain. All the medical "experts" involved in peddling this garbage need to be investigated and lose their licenses.
Thank you, that was me. I'm also the person mentioned at the end who couldn't smooch my man. I've been working as a professional singer for over a decade now and it's been really hard but at least so far I've been able to keep my teeth. But my insurance isn't covering the $40,000 needed to fix this.
I worked with lawyers for 2 years but they dropped my case at the statute of limitations saying it wasn't worth enough money. I had to start a Go Fund Me.

I’ve been through a few seriously medical traumas. There is no Justice
I once had some incredible tooth pain. I was poor and under state Medicaid coverage so I went to the one of two facilities available in a major US city. After weeks of waiting for an appointment I finally got in and met with the dentist who after a few minutes recommended pulling two teeth. I said I would think about it, went to another dentist, got a basic cleaning and have been fine 15 years later. Always get a second opinion before life changing procedures.
So where did the incredible tooth pain come from???

Are you sure it was tooth pain and not gum pain? I have gum pain when I need a cleaning; it's gum inflammation from plaque built up. It goes away a few days after cleaning for me.
When I went to an actual dentist they never gave me a solid answer. The tooth pain was unreal, I have never experienced anything like it, and I have had more than my share of injuries including having a catheter yanked from my you know where. I had to take multiple Tylenol when the wave first started or I would be curled up useless. It could very well be any of the things people are saying, but in any case, pulling teeth was not the answer.
Although I blame the inventor, wtf was that clarinetist’s dentist thinking? Seriously, all he did was force her front four or six teeth right out of her mouth! Just terrible. I’m so upset for her and any others who have suffered with that torture device!!!
She should probably sue the dentist as well. I bet they were getting kickbacks.
I also appear in the story and had a different agga dentist. My top front six teeth were removed completely from the bone. I'm the one mentioned at the end who was unable to kiss her boyfriend due to the sensitivity that caused. I couldn't bite into anything for over a year.

I hope none of the patients feel ashamed or blame themselves. They are not at fault in any way. We place all of our trust in our dentists to do what's best for our teeth. These patients were just incredibly unlucky to see unethical dentists chasing money. This is malpractice, and all of these dentists should get their licenses revoked.

I’m gonna be told I’m victim blaming but whatever. She should have done her research. Dentists are not orthodontists, first. You don’t go to a dentist for something like this. Orthodontists have years to decades of training, not attend one conference with no hands on practice. Really? You trust that? She should have done research especially as her career involved her mouth! No second opinion? No research to see scientific validity with peer review? She did nothing.. Did she even look up the creator? As the moment I heard him I knew he was a snake-oil salesman. This could have been easily avoided had she used common sense & don’t her due diligence. I’m he moment I heard “I went to a conference” I’d be out. & then to charge so much & hear the creator yelling like a pizza salesman about it being worth stuffing the dentists pockets as this was miraculous. All of that sounds questionable. Beyond questionable. People need to take accountability for their own negligence. We live in a society in which everyone is a victim & YES ultimately the creator & dentist are in the wrong but she has a part in this for sure.

The reporter asks "How would you describe what they were subjected to?". He says "Abuse." For me the word that comes to mind is mutilation. They have been pretty much slowly deformed not helped. Unbelievable:(

Dr Bill Hang Himself says he pretty much stopped doing Extraction/Retraction Orthodontics around 30 years ago, and says he's seen many people who were botched by it.
On the news video, it showed a pic of an upper dental arch, that had Extraction/Retraction, (E.g only has ONE bicuspid on either side, instead of TWO) some people who previously had this, ended up pursuing AGGA hoping it would Open spaces, and improve tongue space, and relieve issues that were caused, or exacerbated by Extraction/Retraction.
Dr. Mandelaris - his face tells you all you need to know about the atrocity that was inflicted on these patients. He looks like he saw the worst horror movies one right after the other. I feel really bad for the patients. I hope they are able to recover something for pain and suffering. The maker and dentists who steered their patients toward this treatment should be held accountable. AND the product has to be taken off the market.

I have been an RDA for 37 years and I had the same reaction as everyone else the moment I saw that appliance in the patient's mouth. I'm even more horrified that other dentists actually saw some logic in this. My point is, I'm just an assistant and even I knew that this device could not possibly do what it claims. That "dentist" sounded more like a salesman or con artist at his seminar. I wonder if his license is even valid or real? I'm thinking this guy is really not a dentist at all...if ever!!

You CAN NOT CURE TMJ with a device like this good lord. The fact there is anyone saying that an appliance can cure TMJ is such a red flag. I feel so much for this poor woman, I had double jaw surgery and it changed my life after trying so many other non-invasive treatments. I really hope she can get the treatment she needs after all of this.
May I ask how long did it take you to recover ?
Nothing truly cures TMJD once you have a severe case. Double jaw surgery is extremely expensive and plagued with its own complications.

@@pyromaniac709 Yes. I had to get braces for pre op and keep them on for a year post op. It isn't necessary but extremely recommended to make sure your bite is as aligned as it can be
Unfortunately that surgery is very expressive, and not many insurances cover it. It can also be pretty dangerous. I can see why people fall for these stupid gimmicks

The dentist knew exactly what was happening. Any halfway competent dentist would aslo take xrays to look at the bone, gums and teeth. I'm a nurse and I know for a fact you cannot grow an adults jaw bone. It is set just like all our other bones are once you reach adulthood. The only thing you're gonna do is lose bone because you're forcing teeth out of placement and bone reabsorbs when teeth are missing...which when the teeth kept loosening and loosening from the gums started happening. And if you had any doubt once you see it starting to happen you would immediately forgo this "treatment". Even if this worked, ehat did these patients think would be the fix for their actual teeth sans jaw growth??? Braces cannot help gum recession and bone loss from teeth being pulled out of placement.

My father is a dentist and I have seen the patients he works with since I was a kid. When I saw her mouth I was shocked and audibly gasped at the state of her mouth. I got a little emotional because teeth are like the entrance of a house. Is the first thing everyone sees when they meet you for the first time. I really hope she gets the help she needs and that "dentist" gets all what's coming for him

If a "professional" is saying you need major surgery to fix your bite, your jaws, or facial structure, always get an independent second (and, yes - third) opinion. True professionals don't mind. Take someone you trust with you to take notes. Ask "why", "how", and for literature that supports what you're being told. Ask for the notes from your exam, pictures, and radiographs as well. Do not take no for an answer.

Yes, sadly this can be a lesson for others not impacted by these unethical dentists' practices. Whenever you're spending $$$, get second opinions and do your due diligence.
Mary, speaking as a dentist, I agree with what you are saying. I love when patients ask me questions and give me the opportunity to educate them on the risks and benefits of one treatment over another. When I know I’m going to do a consult with a patient after their exam and their treatment will be complex and/or expensive I always suggest they bring a significant other to help ask questions and help remember what was discussed. The big problem that I think led to these tragic outcomes is price shopping healthcare. If one dentist tells you you need major and expensive jaw surgery and (real) orthodontics to fix your problem and another says they can fix it with a much cheaper and easier appliance, human nature is going to lead a lot of people to make a bad decision. Sometimes in health care cheaper can be better and less is sometime more, but so often you get what you pay for. So I plead with everyone to just stop and think - the dentist offering the more expensive treatment may be trying to save you thousands more in treatment in the long run, by doing it the right way the first time. I lost a patient a few years ago who’s mother wanted me to save her money by using the AGGA instead of the more traditional orthodontic treatment I proposed. She went somewhere else, I guess looking for someone to do what she wanted after I said it was BS and could never do what it claimed. Some people believe what they want to believe. It’s hard. We as professionals would love it if our patients knew what we knew when deciding on treatment. There’s just really no good way to truly impart 4 or more years of dental training and years of experience seeing the myriad ways for treatments to succeed and fail, to anyone in 15, 30 or even 60 minutes of consultation. How I wish we could so we could make sure our patients made the best decision every time.
@tridoc99 You make several good points. And, I agree that when issues are complex, price shopping is not what you want to be doing. I wish I'd taken my own advice several years ago when I broke a corner on #10. I needed some specialized cosmetic reconstruction on #'s 7, 8, 9, & and 10, but my dentist refused unless I got ortho. There was misalignment, but no over-lapping. I saw his preferred orthodontist who spent 20 minutes talking about the 50 ways my jaw, mouth, and teeth were a total wreck and how I needed lots of work in brackets and wires. I did shop other with another provider who said the first analysis was way wrong, and he could fix everything in 13 months with a leading aligner. So, I spent $7k "fixing" minor misaligned teeth. That ortho (at 13 months) said I was done but now my smile looked awful. Did I mention that he's Gold rated? My story ends after another orthodontist finished the front work: IRP between the front four, and 1 degree rotation of #7, taking several more months with some unique bottons. and a wizard of a prostodontist did the reconstruction. Additional cost $4.5k. My huge error - not walking away from a general dentist who was referring work to his friends - and shopping for the best reconstruction provider.

Americans put waaaaaaaay too much trust in medical professionals and too little trust in their own common sense. It seems the covid fiasco has corrected at least some of that thinking.

That guy giving the presentation sounded like such a charlatan. He sounds like someone writing the descriptions for dogs in shelters that have bitten 5 people and nearly killed someone and he calls them "friendly" and "needs growth".

TMJ treatment can be a never ending black hole of despair. There’s little regulation. Dental and medical insurance bounces it back and forth. It’s lonely and scary.

This is why my hubby goes to a dental surgeon for his implants, instead of a general dentist.
Always go to a professional. He is expensive, but worth it.

I’m a dentist, he should of known this was going to happen. The science against this exists. That “Dr” is horrendous. He looks like he doesn’t have his life together. This absolutely, is out of the standard of care. If he still has his license, I’m sure there are restrictions on it by now on what procedures he can practice
Finally dentists and medical professionals are calling out these types of things. I had a questionable procedure done that I'm in pain from but this looks gruesome.
I have several unnecessary fillings from unscrupulous dentists during my youth. I have thankfully been able to have fantastic dental care the last 10 years but the field in general has a lot of trust to regain every time someone does something like this

We rely on doctors to know what they are doing… I was a dental assistant and was confused as to how this would work, but as soon as I saw her teeth, I realized they were simply slowly ripping her teeth out. That’s all this thing did (well that, and caused bone resorption, which is just awful)

Had a quack orthodontist in 1992 remove my bicuspids (molars) for no reason, now my mouth is too small for my tongue. Don't let people remove your adult teeth or mess with your jaw, folks! It's not worth it.

How did this get approved by FDA in the first place?! How did the Dentists who used it not know that in order to expand bones in adults you need to break the bone and leave space first?
That is horrendous! This dentist claimed to improve people's looks. By all accounts he has worsened the looks of the folks highlighted in this story. Worst of all they have suffered pain and more issues than before!
You know it's bad if you found out about the procedure on Facebook.
But it was a group run by the dentists using it. They shared pictures of it on their patients and answered all our questions. They even had before and after pics on the websites for their dental practices. What we didn't realize that many of those "after" pics were after AGGA, but before braces and before treatment was finished.

Hard to believe professional, educated people fell for this. For the dentists, it was just greed. A well-known dentist in town recommended something for my TMJ but it didn't feel right and I never went back to his practice.
Yes, go with our guts! I had a TMJ ‘specialist’ try and sell me his ridiculously overpriced device. It was supposed to be a free consult too but they billed me for it. I was furious and called/wrote complaints but they persisted with threats of collection agency so I reluctantly paid the $90. He was an old guy so probably out of business now, to say the least. A$$HOLE.
Sad thing is that things like this can exist in the dental industry because it has little regulation compared to health care in America. There was a dentist who was using paper clips instead of dental devices in root canals. He saved a ton of money and patients could do nothing

I hope she sues her dentist for everything they have. She waited too long to refer her to a specialist. This is so sad.
I hope they get settlements that will cover the cost of implants. But even that is an ordeal and doesn't always work, especially if the aggra device has ruined the bone.

I picked up on that from the moment I first saw him and heard his speech. Horrible man and jealous of anyone who is of average appearance, much less attractive. You don't get any breaks by being attractive unless you're for sale. Good looks and a few dollars will get you a cup of coffee at McDonalds.
He should be made to wear his own device.

One look at that dentist “inventor” would have me questioning him and the dental device. He looks like he is or will soon be in a health crisis.

I had to have all the rest of my teeth in my upper jaw removed because the metal plate destroyed my teeth and my jaw bone. A fall on my face as a teenager cause a few of my teeth to break. Being patchup many times only made things worse and finally needed a partial since I refuse to get implants.
I was not asked to choose if I wanted metal (cobalt and chromium) or the acrylic. The dentist chose the metal for me. When I first saw it, I told him that I didn't want metal in my mouth, but he went against my wishes anyway. I paid and was given it after the adjustments were made. I should have left it with him, but instead, I left with it frustrated and with tears in my eyes.
Jesus. As someone with an underbite and familiar with the kind of surgery I would need, I was hoping this would’ve showed a different outcome. So sorry these people had to go through that! Jaw surgery is no joke and often isn’t covered by insurance. Personally, I would’ve had to pay between $30-$40k and knew I would’ve had more than a 2-year recovery period, jaw wired shut, etc. At some point you just have to accept what you’ve been given. Hopefully these people get something back from being scammed.
An underbite is caused by poor tongue posture. You weren't "given it," it was a habit you developed as a child. Headgear was probably needed but now ad an adult the only way to fix it is jaw surgery. 2 years is extreme but it is definitely a major surgery.
@@CrystalM1917 It’s not only caused by poor tongue posture, it can also be caused by genetics or injury. I have an underbite and did not have poor tongue posture or other bad habits in childhood. My underbite was fixed by braces when I was a teen, but my lower jaw still juts out a little, since mine wasn’t severe enough to warrant surgery.
Yep, when it comes to preventative anything - our society falls short - our 50 year experiment with the capitalist system is proving it.

Applying pressure to the teeth will have *no effect* on the facial and jaw bone! It will *only* affect the teeth! This is *INSANE!*
I'm completely fuddled by this case! Not me nor any of my colleagues would have believed for a second that this appliance could actually do what it promised to do. Tilting/Extrusion of the teeth, bone loss and resorption of the roots are the only possible outcomes - and that's orthodontics 101. Unbelievable... I feel really sorry for what those patients had to go through.
He should also be financially responsible for ruining her career. Imagine being a well established instrument player and having your lifes work ruined! I feel so bad and angry for her😫
i am so heartbroken for this woman- i am finally in the pre op process for jaw surgery in tennessee but it looks me YEARS to find a credible doctor who listened to my problems and referred me to vanderbilt. i paid out of pocket for so many treatments in that time and i'm thanking god i never came across this man... it's sickening that he's using patients' pain and desperation for his own financial gain. just terrible.
I couldn’t stand this treatment over 30 years ago when they tried to correct an overbite on my preteen mouth as a cheaper alternative than braces... that device started to spice open my tongue and did nothing to correct my cross bite ... so I begged my parents to take me to the university’s practice dentistry campus to remove them on the promise that I would pay for my own dental procedures when I grew up and had my own job with benefits... have not found a dentist to show me a proper plan other than braces for an over 40 yrs old adult ... horrified though-that people are still being tortured with this device 30 yrs later

Almost got this device but I saw a critical blog on jaw hacks that caused me to pause. He was kicked out of RUclips tmj groups for challenging this. I'm so sorry for these people...I ended up getting another kind of expander that worked really well. Still will be getting double jaw surgery.
My mandible and maxilla did not line up since I was a child, and I was told by an orthodontist that no appliance could fix the misalignment that caused it, that only surgery could mend my open bite. It was tedious and scary to do, but the maxillary osteotomy was easier to recover from than I expected, my surgeon was the best, and now ten years down the line, I'm so glad I found a way to take the time and money to have that procedure. My heart goes out to this young woman and anyone else who was taken in by the promise of a non-surgical intervention. Also, if someone needs this kind of surgery and can't afford it, they should look around for charitable organizations who may help lower income folks defray this expense - it is life changing in all the best possible ways.

That is wild. I mean did they not take routine x-rays to check progress? Check for bone loss and mobility with perio charting? I couldn't imagine seeing a patient like this as a hygienist and not discussed any of this...

Oh my goodness, my heart aches for her! I had my own issue with my jaw and upper palate. An $80,000 surgery fixed it. I am sure she would have paid more than that to avoid this nightmare.
I wonder if these issues can affect their heart later. This is just horrible. I can imagine the pain, but I can not imagine the emotional & mental toll.
It's definitely a possibility. Dental health, effects mental health as it is, Teeth and the brain are so close. Dental and healthcare should not be separated. Greedy humans are nauseating. Dentistry isn't an honest practice this day's.
