Hello friends! I hope you like this instructional video and it helps you out. If you are waiting for my video on toiles, please be patient. I didnt quite have it ready for today and as I had this I made a while ago I thought I would share this one with you while you're waiting. Let me know down below, do you have to do a bicep adjustment? PS please like comment and subscribe :-) thanking you very kindly! xx
OMG! I have never ever adjusted a sewing pattern before but you made it look so simple so I gave it a try. I now have an amazing sleeve! Thanks a million
Thank you so much. My mum has very swollen arms with lymphedema post cancer and really struggles to get clothes now to fit especially her upper arm. I have started to make her tops to help so this is marvellous!
This reminds me of a store-bought top I had in high school. I loved the print, the style, but couldn't wait to get home to change it, the arms were so tight😕 I didn't have the skill or knowledge to alter it. Thank you for all you do!
Thank you Claire ❤️ I understood that so much better than some of these other designer explanations. 👎 You make it sound simple and attainable. 👏👏👏🥰❤️😘🇦🇺
One of the reasons I'm learning to sew is that I have a difficult time finding sleeves that I like in rtw clothing, so I'm sure I'll be referring back to this video when I begin garment sewing in the not too distant future.
I have always had ill-fitting sleeves. I once thought that's just the way sleeves are. Now that I know that every issue with the fit and comfort of garments has a solution, it's a relief. Do you know how much I want to throw away 90% of my tops and jackets and start over with only stuff I make with comfortable sleeves? The temptation is real.
This solves one of my problems, thank you Claire! Just a tiny bit of a remark: I think it would be even better if you'd slow down a bit the video. Specially at the end I had to replay the clip to understand it. But I'll replay it of course again the next time I need the hack :-))
Trilliana, Did you know that you can click on the settings icon below the video and change the playback speed? I follow a RUclips channel where the presenter talks so fast that I have to slow it down to 75% every single time I watch him. Give it a try.
@@kateyare4708 Not everyone has the option to view videos on a large desktop computer monitor or tablet/ipad. Most instructions are difficult and impossible to see on a small phone. If I want to view RUclips videos, I always cast the video to a TV. Unfortunately, this doesn't allow for slowing down or speeding up the video. I don't know if this is just an Android limitation. (I tried different phones.) My solution is just to find other videos because trying to watch specific times of something small over and over causes eyestrain and migraines. When I used to have a computer, I thought all these videos were great. But it's easier on eyes to watch from my TV. Kind of at the mercy of RUclips and whatever they decide to fix, upgrade, disable for people who are disabled or on fixed incomes and don't have access to all tech resources and latest gadgets. Sometimes, all I have to do with some videos is take a break or return to it another day and it makes more sense. Many videos of techniques I watch multiple times at the time of need. I do remember the days I used to slow down videos regularly. I don't even watch those channels any more.
Lol you do make me giggle 😄. I'm just beginning so haven't run into such problems yet so I'm starting out with the advantage of your information! Forewarned is fore armed 😂😂😂. Tfs and have a great week
If you would increase the size of the sleeve, would you have to increase the size of the armhole the same amount? I bought a bunch of shirts that ended up way too small on my biceps 💪🏽 so I’m thinking of inserting lace in the gap
Not necessarily. When you increase the sleeve you are increasing the fabric around the arm. The only way you’d need to alter the armhole is if you changed the shape/length of the top (cap) of sleeve piece.
Thank you for this. It was easy to follow but I struggled at the end. The top curve of the original piece. Do you add that back to the new piece only if doing additional adjustment? I also felt that the last bit for the armhole was a little fast and didn't quite get it but will watch back and try again. Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for your feedback. Regarding the curve at the top. This is when you have enlarged the pattern more than one inch as spreading the sleeve flattens out the top too much. So you basically just add the height back in by tracing from the original pattern. Regarding the end part. You need the top curve (after altering the pattern) to be the same length as the armhole. If the curve is one inch longer than the armhole you can add half an each outwards or lower the armhole by half an inch. Or you could alter both by quarter of an inch. This will make the new sleeve head fit in your armhole.
@@Penguinandpear thanks for taking the time to explain further. I'm going to give it a go as I'm planning to make a dress soon. My first attempt was a fail but your recent videos are helping me Soo much as I learn more :)
Thank you! Is there a way to enlarge an armscye once it’s cut out and sewn? I know I’d need to rip out the sleeve but is it possible? I made a woven tunic last year but one armhole seems too short in the armpit. Any help is appreciated..
You could cut some fabric away from your armscye to make it lower but you may need the curve of the sleeve head to be longer. This shouldn’t be an issue if you have gathers or pleats in the sleeve head or if you have a good amount of seam allowance.
@@Penguinandpear ok thank you. If I have to go buy more fabric for new sleeves I will. I wasn’t sure if I could cut the existing armscye. After seeing this video I may need to do the bicep adjustment too. Love your videos. Thanks for answering me so quickly.
@@Nonna_Tina no problem. Sometimes a bicep adjustment can help the garment sit at the shoulders better so you may find all you need as a bicep adjustment. I’d test it with a toile to be sure. Good luck!

I've been pattern cutting for 55yrs and this is the simplest and easiest explanation I've ever seen. Congratulations 🎉
This is my primary pattern conundrum. Thanks a million!
One of the main reasons I want to make my own clothes is just because of this reason!
you just solved a problem that i (ambitious beginner) had with a toile months ago! time to get that project back on track...
This is excellent! I was wracking my brain trying to remember how to add to the bicep but not the lower sleeve. Thank you!
Thank you for helping me on this issue! I am in a sewing class and the teacher couldn't even get me this far! Well done!
thank you that you are giving us the easiest way from your experience
Best explanation ever! Thank you so much. Today new sleeve patterns for me ❤
This video was very helpful to me. Thank you so much for sharing.

I, too, have lymphedema in one arm. I have just begun to make adjustments.
Wow! Thank you for the tutorial. Perfect.
Thank you for including that last part! Every other tutorial stops at the original adjustment, but never explains the cap adjustment or the armscye!!
Happy it helped!
Thank you so much! Perfectly explained and demonstrated. My problem is solved.
I liked this one. Short and informant.
Thanks Claire, for another brilliant tip.
Thanks a million I will try it straight away.
thank you for this, it is the best adjustment info I have ever seen. I will be using this video
Thank you for this, it was really clear and I’m sure I will be referring to it often.

Excellent video. Just what I need . Thank you ❤
Thank you. This is one of my problem areas. Very clear instructions.
Thank you so much! I have chonky arms and this is so helpful ❤
I always have to do a 3+" bicep adjustment. I draw my own sleeve pieces i have a quick & dirty method 😁
That’s probably best for a 3 inch increase. We do what works best for us! Quick and dirty lol 😂
Thank you so very much!!!! Quite helpful and saves me a lot of frustration!!!! 👏👏👏👏
Absolutamente genial! muchas gracias
Many thanks, much needed info!
THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL
Best explanation! Thank you!
Thank you so much. This was THE MOST helpful video on RUclips. Your instructions are clear and I love your personality online. Great video!👍🏻
Yaaaaasssss this is what I'm looking for
Brilliant explanation! ❤

Honestly, you are fab! Thanks for this. Love your energy :)
Thanks so much for the video, very helpful
Thank you for this. This helps.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!! Thanks for sharing. New subbie!!!
Thank you so much. That will help me greatly. Now if I can figure out how to do collars, I'll be perfect.

Lol funny!
What about taking a shirt (T or other) cutting it up, side seams then sleeve, wouldn’t that work for material? Just use old shirt fir pattern.
you clever thing!!😍
Hello will this work for a drop shoulder sleeve? The bicep area is too tight
I do not understand why you can’t grade out on the sides of the sleeves. Can you explain?

When I was not plus size. I had the same problem. In fact all the thin problems I had I have as thic.
You needed more sleeve girth when you were thin?
