I have 2 cups that have some areas where I missed brushing glaze and I dont want to throw them out because they actually came out really nice. I’ve just bought my first kiln which is Skutt 818. Thanks for your details in using the kiln. Unfortunately, when I put the kiln wash on the shelf yesterday, I broke 2 of the half shelf accidentally by a sudden strong wind. Heartpain😢

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH. I just bought a used kiln and have done 2 firings, bisque and glaze. The bottom portion never turns out. Why? I just placed the shelf on the kiln floor. I never knew you had to raise it to haha. Lordy lordy. Let's see if this helps my next batch 😅
You are most welcome. Yes, The air has to flow under the bottom the shelf. What also helps is to fire to 5 cone and put a 20 hold at the end. This is equal to cone 6 except it equalizes the temperature in the kiln and helps to cure the glaze and helps to prevent pinholes. 😊

Thank you so much Marie for making videos for newbies. I’m in India and totally new to ceramics. Kilns arent that easy or that many to choose from either. But some Skutt models are indeed available. Your kiln videos are good primers for me to plan for acquiring and using a kiln. Just wish they werent shaped like a village well! Won’t square kilns with a full door be easier to use? Will be going through all your hand-building and general videos to educate myself somewhat.

I have an older little thing so no panel to worry about, but in the summer when we can get 100F or in winter where we get below freezing temps is it ok to run? It has its own legs so lots of air flow there, and the area it is in is a large garage that also has a built-in fan in the roof.
Very Good Question. Yes it is ok. It is best to start your kiln when the garage is above freezing. So you can warm up the area before starting your kiln. 👍😀

Marie, thank you so much for taking the time to make such an informative video! I have recently bought a kiln and waiting for an electrician to do rewiring magic so I can do the first firing! I have two questions.
1) I was so worried about fumes and not venting correctly (with baby home etc) I’ve decided to place my kiln in my back porch. It’s got a concrete flooring and roof. I’m going to cover it with tarp when not using it. Would you have any extra advice I should keep in mind?
2) I understand you can have pieces touch each other during bisque firing. Does this make the # of pieces you can glaze fire in a kiln compared to bisque fire?

Yes I end up with about half the amount for glazing. That is a good idea but just me carful not to get the kiln wet. They hate moisture.

Marie, I just rewatched this video. I’m a newbie handbuilder and I intend to make small pieces. I’ve recently acquired the smallest Skutt model KM714 and done my first bisque and glaze firing. Many lessons were learned from those exercises. Fitting in stuff was indeed like a jigsaw puzzle. I had made and used kiln-washed cookies after your informative video on them. My question is about the best way to place plates and flat tiles to prevent cracking. I used some grog under all my flat pieces but I was probably stingy with it as two tiles were still cracked slightly. Do make videos on this aspect sometime as also on the advised kiln furniture that can help use the kiln space more judiciously. I’m in India and may not find everything but getting educated on some best practices is also a good plan :-) thanks for your enthusiasm to teach and share through your videos. I’ll be reading through your blog more carefully too.
Hello, Jyoti from India. Congratulations on getting a Kiln. That is wonderful. If my plate is too big for one cookie I use 3 or 4 of them with a little space so the plate can move if need be. I haven't had a plate crack yet. Drying is also important. Thank you for the detailed video. A couple of questions. I throw at least 55-60 lbs a month and will likely increase, since I am still new to throwing, (since March). Will this kiln be big enough? Also, why do you use cookies for the bowls? At the studio where I belong we only use them for test tiles, if we don’t know whether glaze will run. For known clay and glazes we just wax the bottom and don’t use cookies. Thanks!
Hi. That is Great! For the amount that you throw and will grow. I would recommend getting a larger kiln. It is energy efficient. About $3 for bisque and $5 for glaze. 😊

Great explanation as usual. My kiln arrived today. Unfortunately i have two fractures in my wrist and elbow so no playing with clay for another month or so. I have a question you didn’t use cones in your glaze firing. Do we need to put them in every time on each shelf. Also you didn’t put any pots on the bottom shelf is that normal practice. Thanks once again.
That is great. Congratulations Jeanet! Sorry to hear about your fractures. I put small short things on the bottom shelf because of where the thermocouple is located. I never put anything on the bottom of the kiln without a shelf.
If it's a new kiln I would put cones in when you fire the first few times. After that, I would place a cone in every 3rd to 5th firing to ensure the temperature is correct. Hi Marie, Thank you for sharing your awesome talent with us. I have a skut glaze tech kiln. It’s square and small. I’m confused on what I hear about hold time. The user manual suggests 5 minutes. I think you are holding for 20 minutes. I wonder because my kiln is small and square it might be different from a kiln like yours. What do you think? Thank you again
Thank you. Yes, your kiln is so small all you need is a 5 minute hold to help cure the glaze. The hold keeps the kiln at the ending temperature. A 20 minute hold will be equal to another cone size. Hope this helps. 😊
You’re always so helpful. I have another question. I hope it okay. I fired some stuff. I used Sax glaze and painted over with Obsidian, and the other way around too. Black on red, red on black and they both have bumpy glaze. Other stuff turned out great. I tried to get some information from online, but they just listed 20 different things. It could be. Do you have any suggestions for me? Is the Sax Not so good? Maybe shouldn’t mix them? Long question. Sorry. thank you
Of course it's OK. That is an important question. You spend so much time making and glazing your pottery, you want it to turn out. Yes, you are right. The Sax and Amaco glazes sometimes don't marry very well together. The Amaco glazes are much more forgiving. It sounds like the bumps are from the gases not having the ability to escape from the glazes. 😊
Your videos are great! I just got my kiln also a Skutt 818 this week. I need to put it on the rolling stand and I'm wondering if it's necessary to remove the lid to do this? I'm worried about the handles not being strong enough to hold the entire kiln? Any thoughts? Thanks.
Congratulations Kristen.😍 So happy for you. No, I didn't remove the lid. The handles are strong enough because the kiln is not that big. It was actually lighter than I thought. Just make sure someone helps you. One on each side and it lifts right onto the stand. It is so convenient on wheels.

I wanted to ask you … I am making Christmas decorations and I will like to try to do a single firing what temperature should I go for I am using earthnware clay normally I do bisque setting at 1060 and then I do the glaze firing but I don’t know how to do a single firing
You are most welcome Adri. You can single fire to - Cone 06 - 1000 degrees Celsius. Make sure you slow fire allowing the gases to escape during the firing. 😊

Blick has been very good to me, also. If you get the 818 it's best to get the 3-inch brick because it is more fuel efficient and the kiln slows down slower. If you have any questions feel free to ask. 😍

Do you have a video that shows how you load plates for a bisque firing?
That is a good suggestion. I stack them but I only stack a few because you can put too much pressure on the bottom plates and risk warping them. 😊

Thank you. That plate was only 18cms wide. With the size of my kiln, I can go up to 25cms without touching the posts. If it's larger I place it on the top shelf and can make it up to 40cms. 😊
hi marie!! i have another question😬 ..... im going to do my first test fire and the instructions say to let the kiln wash dry overnight once I apply it. Do I have to do that every time I put kiln wash? and how often do I put kiln wash? thank you for being so helpful!🙏
I have never had kiln wash with instructions that say to wait overnight. I have always been told to wait until the kiln wash dries thoroughly. To be on the safe side if that's what the instructions say then I would wait overnight. It is smart to get all the information you can before proceeding forward. Great video. You say your kiln isn't vented, just the top peeper is left open. Is this necessary ? I also just bought a kiln, the same size, with no venting system. And if it 'is' necessary, do you keep it open during both bisque, and glaze firing? Thanks.
Thanks Kristopher, 😊Yes it is for both. Having the top peep open for the bisque fire allows the organic materials to escape otherwise it will settle on your elements and back on your pottery which in turn can affect your glazing. This is also true for the glaze fire. The peep allows a little oxygen to enter the kiln and releases the fumes. Did you see the kiln question video? venting your kiln is necessary for safety reasons. there are a variety of toxic materials and gases that are released during firing, which can build up in the kiln brick and in the area surrounding your kiln. see this link for more information: ehs.princeton.edu/health-safety-the-campus-community/art-theater-safety/art-safety/ceramics#k

Can you tell me how many inches up the thermocouple is in this Kiln? I just ordered a Skutt KM818 with 2.5" brick and now getting ready to order my furniture. At the moment I'm not making much that I would use 2" posts for so I need to know what size I'll need to clear the thermocouple. Based on your video I'm thinking a 1" for the bottom shelf, then I would need to use 6" posts for the second shelf to clear the thermocouple and go 2" past it.
Congratulations on your new kiln. It's so exciting. 😍 The thermocouple is 7 inches from the bottom. I love this kiln. The only thing I don't like about it is the location of the thermocouple. You need 1-inch posts on the bottom. Then keep in mind each shelf is 3 quarters of an inch thick. The height of posts would have to coincide with the size of pottery you plan on making. I put short things like plates on the bottom and use three shelves most of the time. I have only used one of my half shelves once, but that will depend on what you make. That is very smart of you to do some measuring before you buy your posts. Just make sure you have a clearance of 2 inches around your thermocouple. Enjoy your new kiln. @@PotteryCrafters thanks for getting back to me! I actually ordered the advancer shelves, so they will be a bit thinner. I didn't realize before watching this video that you needed a 2" clearance around the thermocouple, so I'm glad I saw this before ordering my posts. I'm actually going to see if they will allow me to switch the 818 to an 822 that way I get 4.5" more space, which gives me a whole 'nother shelf worth per load.

Do you use a kiln vent? If so, did you add vent holes to the lid as well as the floor?
Great question. 😊 No I do not. I always keep the top peeper out and the garage door open about a foot. It only smells for a few hours between around 500 and 1000 degrees when most of the organic material burns off. I also keep both cars out of the garage. No excess heat in the garage because it is a small kiln with 3-inch brick. Hope this helps 😃👍
@@PotteryCrafters do you find you have more fumes with the glaze firing? That's what I'm experiencing. I do have a down-draft vent since my kiln is in the basement, so I'm surprised by the fumes whenever I glaze fire.
That's a good question. It's funny I just noticed the other day that I have more fumes when I bisque fire. That's good that you have a vent 👍 The vent over the over head vents help with getting rid of fumes and extra heat. 😊
Marie, what do I do if I have half shelves along with full shelves? This makes it kind of impossible to line up the stilts directly over eachother. Is this a problem? I just noticed you didn't use any half shelves.
Very good question Heidi. You would mainly use half shelves for different heights. Place three posts under your half shelf, then 3 higher posts under the next half shelf to stagger the height 😊
