    Hi! Love your work and videos. When you say that you paint around the flowers with your white liner glaze, does that mean you fill in all the white areas with white glaze? Do you put a coat of clear over everything? TIA!

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 11 часов назад

      Hi Lisa! I am not a fan of the clear glaze...except perhaps the black and white vase. When you brush clear glaze over underglaze colors, it changes them. In my opinion, clear makes them more garrish, darkens some of them and makes some of them a bit streaky if there isnt enough coverage. I also like to do a little bit of watercolor on my own underglazed paintings. When clear is brushed over watered down underglaze it ruins the look I was going for in the first place. So instead of using clear, I brush white liner glaze around all my imagery. It takes longer and is not for everyone, but I love it and dont mind the extra work. thanks so much for asking and for watching. Happy painting to you. Ann

    Ann, this is simply the best underglaze pottery video, EVER! This is a design style I've always wanted to do as it reminds me of some blue and white colonial Williamsburg designs, which I love! Notes to myeself: On the Monochromatic, Amaco Electric Blue, and Baby Blue...work from center out from light to dark. So bisque fired to cone O4, and then glazed arond all of hte imagry with a white liner glaze and fired to cone 5 with a 6 minute hold. Ann I wonder if you could say what kind of clay you used? Thank you so, so much! Do you do classes on this technique? I would plan a trip to whereever you are to take it; I'm not kidding.

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 11 часов назад

      Hi Diane! You are so sweet! I am so flattered. As far as the kind of clay I use, I prefer to paint on a cool white colored clay that is very smooth, so my favorite is Standard brand English Porcelain #365. It is a bit expensive so I have been also trying their other smooth white porcelain #213. It isnt quite the color I want, but if I want to save money it is sold at the pottery supply close to me. If I were you, I would check out what brands are available nearest to you and then see if there is a porcelain or "porcelain-like" clay that fires to the color that you like. As far as in person workshops go, I have been so busy with these videos and my own work that I dont teach in person any longer. Sorry about that. I do have some painting tutorials that are a bit longer than these 15 minute videos if you are interested. check out show notes. Give this a go. Im excited for you. Ann

    Ann, thank you for such precise helpful videos. I so enjoy your teaching style. I have tried this technique before, and I get a splotchy color. How many coats of each color do you use and how do you stay consistent through each coat?

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 7 часов назад

      Hey Roberta. Great question. The answer depends on the particular underglaze you are using and being familiar with what it will do upon being fired. But to be safe if I am doing a technique like this where I want a solid color without streaks and splotches, I would make sure I have about 3 solid coats and really look to make sure you cant see the clay underneath at all. If you have appllied three layers and still see a bit of the clay underneath, the underglaze might be a little too watered down, so dont be afraid to add more layers. the other thing is that sometimes if you are someone who likes to brush a clear glaze over the paintings the clear glaze may have a tendency to cause colors to look streaky or garrish. That is one reason, I dont use clear glaze. Good luck and happy potting. Ann

    Ann why do you do a hold for 5 minutes on your firings? Also, when you add a white liner coat around your designs do you have any tips to not get the liner glass on the designs? thanks! I really enjoy your videos.

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 11 часов назад

      Hi Jan. Good questions. As far as the extra 5 minutes, it just seems to me that the extra 5 minutes I add to the load seems to give a little extra shine to my stiff white glaze. Without the 5 minutes, the glaze is a bit more matt. Nothing wrong with it, but I just like that little bit of shine better next to the unglazed matt illustrations . One other thing, if the unglazed matt illustrations are a bit rough to the touch I lightly sand them down with a fine automotive sand paper to make them smooth. As far as tips on brushing the glaze around the illustrations...I start by using a larger brush to get as much of the bigger areas covered first, then switch to smaller brushes to get the tighter areas. It is not hard, but takes a bit more time. Make sure you get enough glaze to the areas so it doesnt appear too thin upon firing.... It is very satisfying actually to me so I dont mind the extra work. I do have longer videos available on underglaze painting if you are interested. see the show notes. Give these a try and happy painting! Ann

      Hi Xythen. That is a good question that I get a lot. I am not a fan of the clear glaze...except perhaps the black and white vase. In my opinion, clear makes them more garrish, darkens some of them and makes some of them a bit streaky if there isnt enough coverage. So instead of using clear, I brush white liner glaze around all my imagery. It takes longer and is not for everyone, but I love it and dont mind the extra work. thanks so much for asking and for watching. Give it a go one with clear glaze over top and the other brushing a stiff white liner glaze around the imagery and see which one you like the best. One other thing, when you only apply glaze around the illustrations, you get a cool texture of a raised satin area where the glaze it and a bit rough flatter texture to the unglazed areas. I like the different heights and textures... (if there is any really rough areas, I lightly sand it with automotive sand paper to take that down so it is smooth. It doesnt hurt the underglazed areas.

      Hi John. Good question. I prefer a "cool white" colored smooth clay. The pottery supply near me sells Standard brand. Their English Porcelain #365 is my favorite but it is expensive so I have been experimenting with their cheaper white porcelain that fires to mid range. I like it but it isnt quite the color I want.

    Do you water-down your underglazes?

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 11 часов назад +1

      Hi Brown. For these projects, my goal was to have a glaze that flowed well but I only needed solid color coverage so I didnt do any extra watering down the colors for like a watercolor look. this video was more about solid color underglaze and adding character to it by layering other solid colors over top of them. I hope that answers your question. Happy potting to you. Ann
