For my money, this is the type of drumming vocabulary I like to hear. What a wonderful display of controlled dynamics, colorful phrasing and creative ideas! Nothing against all the great new drummers that have arrived on the scene since this video was recorded.
I miss Chick Corea one of my favorite musicians of all time. The best of the best. Beautiful music exceptional musicianship great songwriting... One of a kind. I was very fortunate to have seen him at Catalinas early 1990s Hollywood Ca
Chick Corea has worked and played with some of the greatest drummers of all time over the years, Steve Gadd, Lenny White, Jack Dejohnette, Jeff Ballard, Vinnie Colaiuta, Roy Haynes, Marcus Gilmore, Gary Novak, Antonio Sanchez to name a few but i would put Dave Weckl as perhaps the finest all round drummer he has ever worked with. Weckl's solos are always the highlights of the show and he has a distinct sound on the kit that when you hear it, you know straight away it's him, he can play any style of music and he always excels in any setting whether it's acoustic or electric. I consider him to be my absolute favourite drummer ever and quite possibly the best in the world, just watch his opening drum solo from 0:00 to 3:15, it doesn't get any better than this!
This was the first time I saw Weckl playing some +25 years ago, exactly this video. And it was mind blowing, I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Perfect drumming, perfect drum sound, brilliant in every way. I thought this must be god himself playing the drums :D
...I 1st heard part of the head of this on W.R.T.I 90.1{Temple Uni's Student Jazz Radio Station in Philly} back when I was in High School-College cassette taping signal off the radio, learning more about the music whatever caught my attention @ the time...Never got the title of the tune announced...Lol!!!
My dentist, here in Japan, plays jazz bass as a hobby. John Patitucci was so in hock over his daughter's education, that when he came to Japan for a gig, he had to borrow my dentist's instrument. It's a damn shame top jazz musicians aren't paid what they are worth.
I noticed that before I read these comments. I thought maybe they had inserted a different part of the video into the solo. A man at peace with his craft...
My guess is this is almost 30 years ago. Holy crap. Seems like yesterday they did a free concert at World Trade Center and signed VHS videos!! and CDs!! --all gracious as hell.
It's interesting comparing this version to when Vinnie played with Chick at the Blue Note Tokyo. Here, it's very much Dave holding back, sensitive, giving others room to express and being a supportive accompanist. Whereas Vinnie was very much more a rock player's touch, domineering, I guess because of the excitement the music was just pouring out of Vinnie and Vinnie (and Chick and John) knew Vinnie was taking it to another level and that was okay. But in the end I like both versions, they're both magical and next level for very different reasons. The only thing Dave wins hands down on is the big hair! :P
Wow! The acoustics in this place are so different than in the place where they recorded "Alive." It's very boomy. I prefer the solo that he plays before "Humpty Dumpty" on the "Alive" cd, but that's just me. It's not nearly as long and he hints at the melody throughout.
Love the acoustic band; don't like the electric band. Then again, I'm not a big fan of fusion in general. This trio of musicians were made for each other, but Chick was the alchemist.
This is my favorite era of weckl.
One of the finest percussion intros you will ever hear. THAT is an intro!
This is the best version of this tune on RUclips. Definition of effortlessness.

Dave Weckl is one of the most *musical* drummers to ever sit behind the drum-set. This is a beautiful and ultra- inspiring performance.
Dave Weckl here is just untouchable. No one paints with strokes of transitional phrasing like he does. Beautiful trio.
Lisa Bella Donna I completely agree.
This is inspiring...and makes me want to study harder and harder.
I feel the foot-to- high hat keeping time is the most underrated yet incredible feat in jazz
Dave Weckle, as always, absolutely brilliant! What an incredible God-given talent!

yup, he's absolutely the G.O.A.T
Weckl is a great if premeditated drummer. I'll take the Vinnie videos with Chick.
Three outstanding muscians, well else can you say
Dave was and still is a monster behind the kit! He just keeps getting better and better!
Pre Aged K ...........ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!!!!!!!!!
fess04 Bruno Mars magic in the air
fess04 Bruno magic 24 hour
got to see him in 1988 ...awesome
Monumentally Brilliant!!!
Definitely my favorite recording of this song
4:23 - 5:00, 9:45 - end, bass solo, drum solo... So much intensity and emotion behind this!
Love the way Weckl starts the track after his solo. And Chick is excellent here - so much music-maths.
REALLY AMAZING
ONE OF THE MOST EXITING PERFORMANCES IN THIS BASIC FORMATION OF PIANO, BASS & DRUMS
Wow. Great Weckl here. As always.
wow.. weckl.. amazing
this might be the best Weckl playing I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a bit.
Looking forward to Weckl fans telling us all how this is the best drumming/solo/time keeping/comping/ blah blah ever. Always a competition with them.

this should be register as one of the best TRIO in the history of contemp jazz ...and 3 most amazing musicians or better yet geniuses ..
let's talk about weckl use of the hi hat at 6:40 .. fellow drummers.
Well, better not :D
uber sweet, They all play at such a high virtuoso level that is very inspiring to hear!
a moment of delight.
BEST of the BEST!!!
This was such a great era for Weckl. I mean - he got better, but.... that's what he does. I really dig this pre-Gruber age too.
I don't even play drums, but Dave Weckl is simply amazing.

weckl so good
The world best..

that's a shame!!
Inspiring!
Love the latin drum felling on the double bass solo ...
Seems to be more spontaneous than the other live youtube version.
Great !
Forse è meglio dirlo. Questo che ascoltate è semplicemente sovrumano. Il meglio che può essere ascoltato. In questa esecuzione c'è molto paradiso.
I love how still Chick's head is throughout his solo :D
As relaxed as someone waiting for a bus. Truly in the zone

Ahh , Chick's best period - 1992-1996 , and the early works of corse :)
Dave Weckl at his best, I love it

Un fkn real
I don't know the characters who gave this 2 thumbs down but they need to get their hearing check and eyes too!
I think people do that just to be a dick. This is just incredible!
C L E A N
You can never have too much bass
Weckl is the Michael Jordan of drums... Or soloing at least..
What are you emplying here
ain on the ride gives it a washy kinda sastain to it, and if you have a ride tht has high overtones it will give it a rainy kinda feel
W.E.C.K.L
@frostizado thx :)
Noone will ever outchick Chick
effect snare?
btw, what's the chains on the ride for?
@bradley1107 but that's how they should play the song :D
3:11
@armystrong2727 thx :)
Great playing, but i love Vinnie Colaiuta on drums more in the trio :)
Agreed!
Full mullet Weckl is the best Weckl. His playing is amazingly fluid here.
Hahaha..
John
8:10 - 8:35 -> monster
before weckl used sabian aha
er...its mike portnoy, but yeah i agree
who's om the bass here?
+Kazuo Mahili John Patitucci
party-touche
I feel bad for both John and Dave sometimes. . . that was a nasty ass solo, Chick. Wtf...
Love the acoustic band; don't like the electric band. Then again, I'm not a big fan of fusion in general. This trio of musicians were made for each other, but Chick was the alchemist.
Weckl always sounded better on those K's
Yawn, have a listen to the version with colaiuta. This is sleepy stuff.
Both good versions, with very different feels. Why slam one to compliment the other? To characterize this as "sleepy"................hmm?
(Chuckle) Your obviously an idiot.
People who make comments like that are either retarded.Or they're just being sarcastic.I'll let you figure out which one.
