Epic Elvis! Can only imagine how mind blowing his performances must have been for folks back in 1956… it’s still mind blowing now, almost 70 years on! ❤
60 Million people watched this live on TV the night it aired. 80% of the viewing audience that night were watching Elvis. That means all those people were talking about it next day at work, school, etc. That was "viral" before viral was even a thing.
What a huge song this was. You have to remember this was 1956. Rock n Roll was still in it's infancy and many people at the time this was being broadcast live thought rock was a fleeting fad. No one outside of the neighborhood of 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool, England ever heard of a kid by the name of Paul McCartney and wouldn't for another 6-7 years. This really changed EVERYTHING!
Yes, and may I complement what you wrote. People dont realize that the 82.6% share this telecast garnered for CBS led, immediately, to the exponential increase in the cost of an ad, in prime time, from US$95,000 to a quarter of a million dollars a minute. The sale of radio transistors, radios, recorders, record players, televisions and obviously guitars and every single instrument under the sun was the subject of a doubling, tripling, and even tenfold increase in the number of units sold, in respect of what the sales had been in 1955. In those days, you had to wait until February to get the economic results from the year before, but to this day, the percentage in the increases from 1955 to 1956 have yet to be equaled. In Japan, a tiny company changed its mission to meet the new demands, It's called SONY. Barry Gordy created TAMLA, then MOTOWN to give African American artists the same chance to change the music world that Elvis had had at SUN. And in Mexico, RCA built the largest record plant in the world, all of it in 1957. Here is what Tim Wu said about this particular broadcast, as far as getting the attention of a nation, in his 2016 book" The Attention Merchants: The Epic Scramble to Get Inside Our Heads". And I quote " The peak of peak attention can be assigned an exact date: September 9, 1956, when Elvis Presley made his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, at CBS. Its 82.6 percent share of viewers, out of a population roughly half of today' s, has never been equaled or bettered, But it is the intro, the one that has had an afterlife, as Ministers of State, at the UN, and at the European Union keep referring to Elvis, in their official speeches, as the "great philosopher". LOL.
Before Michael Jackson, before Madonna, before Led Zeppelin, before the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, there was Elvis Presley. Elvis changed the world forever. He invented the artform of rock n' roll. He set the example of what "cool" looks and sounds like. He crossed racial lines at a time when segregation still existed. He is America's gift to the world. Ever and always The King
@K O Well, hundreds of millions of people disagree with you, as well as “Rolling Stone” magazine, which rated him as the number 3 musical act of all time, behind only The Beatles and Dylan.
So far from the truth. Great singer. But no offense. He was white during a severely racist time. All the black rock and roll artist never got the same love. You know. The people who made the genre? Little Richard is the King.
@@MFjaYWiLL He and Sun records owner Sam Phillips brought rhythm and blues/rock to the white masses, effectively integrating the two cultures musically. Without Elvis bridging the gap, who knows how long it would've taken for black music/ culture to be accepted into the mainstream. I agree, Little Richard and Chuck Berry are the Kings of Rock, but Elvis is the basically the most well known, diverse and dynamic singer of all time.
Danny D yeah because the world was racist and still is racist as fuck. No offense. Whites have NEVER given us credit for anything. Period. So much so that they try white washing our history. Elvis sung OUR music. Same with The Beatles. Lot of cover songs. Lenon admitted stealing songs and changing a few words here and there several times for songs. So to me Elvis can’t be a king. He is one of the greats. Great singer and showman. But not the greatest. Not when the other people of your time who were better. More creative couldn’t get the time or the shine simply cause of skin. Their is videos of The Tempts being called the Harlem Globetrotters on live tv. Like to be treated as a joke cause of color when you visibly see talent is better is just crazy.
Danny D and no he isn’t at all. The best, most diverse and dynamic singer by FAR and away. I would go with 3 as far as males are concerned. Freddie. Mj. And Ruffin. Ruffin is my all time favorite. He was the greatest vocalist I ever listened to in my life
Happy birthday to heaven Elvis, we love you very much and you will always be present in our hearts Thank you for everything you gave, you were and will continue to be the best artist of all time, so talented, charismatic, handsome, and with a big heart, I know that you are in a better place now, I love you forever dear Elvis 🤍
Elvis was the greatest. That being said it is kind of weird seeing people in their youthful prime on top of the world, knowing how their lives will end.
This is why he's the King of RR. Nothing before him sounded like this. Yes there was R&B, Jazz but no one delivered RR the way he did. Elvis had the energy, the look, the moves, the rebellion, the charisma, the shock. All of these are ingredients for rock n roll.
To be honest I don't fully understand Elvis title as the "King of Rock and Roll", I kind of veiw rock and Roll as a fusion of Blues and County, with the likes of Chuck Berry and Little Ritchard on the Rythim and Blue side of the spectrum and Carl Perkins and Elvis on the Rockabilly side . I think Buddy Holly would be an artist who walkes pretty Close down the middle. Another Issues I have is that Elvis had a couple of Rock and Roll songs, compared to the number of ballads he prefromed How ever there is no dout that he put his foot print right down the middle of Rock and Roll, and jis dancing is pretty cool too.
Awesome gorgeous Elvis should have stayed like this for ever. His voice handsome looks moves his band Scotty Moore guitar playing was first class. Wonderful memories. Xxxx
There are a lot of people who ask "where are the microphones?" At 0:07, where Elvis is looking up, you can see the reflection of the overhead microphone on his forehead. He's making sure he's directly below it.
June 25, 2022, in another apperance at Ed Sullivan show at the end of this same song he said "Until we meet again may God bless you as he bless me" when you think about this words today it just give me the Rock chills, I was 7 years old when he died but he was part of my growing up thanks to my parents who were such a huge fan of Elvis and his legendary songs❤ RIP The Only One KING😥

Elvis was the beginning of a social and cultural revolution that we're still in. He unleashed thru his appearance (hair, clothing etc;) and behavior essentially an alternate male model for contemporary society. Father Knows Best and Ozzie and Harriet were being mummified on that stage on the Ed Sullivan show that night in 1956. Little did they know that they're little kiddies were being spoon fed by some White boy with a guitar a new way to be. And they took that spoon and flew with it. And that plane has yet to land.

I have an idea which I think would be exciting for your viewers and help make this channel more popular. Instead of streaming one clip at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday nights, Ed Sullivan's original time slot, you should stream an entire episode live each Sunday. Viewers could talk about the acts while the show is being broadcast, in the live chat. I think that would be a lot of fun and help re-create the experience of watching Ed Sullivan each Sunday night. Also, I'm surprised it took this long to get around to the great Elvis!
It's three years later, and honestly, seems like there's no way they'd do this, but I wish they would because it's a seriously cool idea. I'm sure tons of people would "tune in" like they did back then. It's crazy, because even I remember when I was a kid in the 90s that since we didn't have cable, we only had like 5 channels. So, if I wanted to watch something - it was whatever was on those at the time: often it was things like reruns of Seinfeld or the Simpsons after school. Kids have an entire _universe_ to watch by comparison, for free, in HD, 24/7 now. It's insane the technological/societal change even I've witnessed in a little under 40 years.
