I don't care what anyone says the second method is the easiest way to go. I've been doing that method For years on 2 and 4 stroke motorcycle engines. This video just reaffirms that this method is one of many good ways to install a motorcycle cylinder. 👍👍👍👍

one tip I gave to my students was instead of using a screw driver to work the rings in to the cylinder I use plastic or bamboo chopsticks to prevent scratching the rings especially the cast rings. they work really and I also use tuning fork type rod and piston supports I either build them from 1/2 alluminium bar stock or blocks of hardwood
Time i have one tries to use a a unsharpened pencil but you will never know when a bloddy particle of that fell in the chamber of your crankcase- as wood is quite vulnerable to the pressure you use to compress those rings
I used method two as I'm on my own and inserted pistons from the top going down so could monitor rings and gaps as the moved in the cylinder on a bench at home....pre-fitted pistons in cylinders and marked the four spots for gaps all the way top to bottom vertically....babbaboom job done....cheers Shane.\m/

Ordered my sportster Hammer 1275 kit with pistons already installed in the cylinders. I’ve installed two sporty kits this way and it’s super easy. First time I pulled one piston a little too far down to get it on the connecting rod but was able to gently compress the rings with my fingers and put the piston back up. Love the channel guys!

I’m not a mechanic but have been a carpenter for 30 years and agree with the upside down solo method of installing piston into jugs. When I install doors ( heavy fire down to hollow core) I like be solo. Less hands on means less pinched fingers or things messed up. The best way to learn the easy way is by yourself alone. Thanks for the knowledge again. Great vids.

I love these videos, I taught powersports(small engine, snowmobile, atv, marine and some motorcycle) at Fairview college in northern alberta for 4 years, doing something like these for the theory classes or demo,s before we actually went to work in the shop.is a great idea because its really tough to show 25-28 students individually these techniques in the time allotted in the shop. really hard to get around to everyone and make sure they all understand the procedures. excellent way to teach. nice job. and it also shows there are always other ways to do the job properly and with skill and end up with a finished product you can be proud of
Great video, I'm really happy to see this on youtube. Excellent! Thank you for showing three different methods. I still prefer the first method though, use a ring compressor and lower the cylinder over it. Very easy this way and no fooling around with the circlip with a cylinder still in your hand. Anyway, it's so good to see each method of doing this job!

@@How2Wrench I've actually watched that video before. I'm working with the engine still on the bike by myself. This is the second time I've had to replace the jugs and I'm just curious between both methods which is better? I also don't have a small enough piston rings compressor. I used hose clamps last time but I really don't want to again if avoidable. Last time, after getting the bike together, I had no compression. I found that the rings were stuck in their grooves and didn't expand. I'm curious if that was due to the hose clamps? I don't see how, but I've seen a lot of weird things working as a heavy line tech for Dodge. I have ran a ring groove cleaner on the pistons again and did find a very small amount of carbon that was missed. I speculate that's why they stuck. I apologise for rambling. I'm just trying to cover all my bases before I move forward and spend another 80 bucks on gaskets.
@@AmericanDefender Have you seen how cheap the "right tool" is? I'll out a link below. amzn.to/2ZrYb3D or amzn.to/2NQgPN2 I did a quick check on your stock bore and it showed 64.8mm (www.google.com/search?q=79+gs1000+bore+size&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS718US718&oq=79+gs1000+bor&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j33l3.13783j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) I personally like to first one with the short clamp band width. Nice for getting in and around studs. I don't want to discredit clever ideas but when it comes to piston rings, I find the tool is much wider and correct for installation without damage. As to why the rings compressed and did not release I have an amazing video showing exactly. I am in the process of editing it for our new members/donation site.

Another reason you would want to do it like this is you may not have enough clearance to get a tool underneath the cylinder. I have installed many this way when there is no way possible to use a ring compressor tool on the cylinder.

The first time I saw method #2 used was in a very old machine shop in at least it's second generation, specializing in HD rebuilds.. I had no idea it was so controversial.
Since no one seems to no I'll ask here witch way does the mess exspander ring go in when its installed on the piston does it come together as a ( m ) or a ( w )

I use a combination of both methods. I install the piston into the cylinder on the bench with a compression tool. I install one circlip and partially install the wrist pin. Then I go install it on the bike. Not gonna lie, sometimes It's a pain to install the last circlip, while holding the jug. Would like to see someone come out with a circlip install tool. Maybe motionpro makes one?

I never had a problem just using my fingers to compress each ring as the cylinder drops, the piston has be up high enough to get your hands in there but not so high the jug won't catch the studs, tall cylinders you can get away with this, short cylinders would be more difficult
I can't stand working on Hoggley-Stevensons !!! : ) I've got a joke for you .... what is the difference between a Harley rider , and a Hoover Vaccum cleaner ??? The position of the dirt-bag !! : ) L.O.L. beg my pard !!
You didn’t tell the joke right. Skip the rider part, then “On the Hoover, the dirt bag sits on the inside.” Another one: If Harley-Davidson made an airplane, would you fly in it?? 😅 From a Harley rider in Southern California ~ Ride Forever! 🦅

one tip I gave to my students was instead of using a screw driver to work the rings in to the cylinder I use plastic or bamboo chopsticks to prevent scratching the rings especially the cast rings. they work really and I also use tuning fork type rod and piston supports I either build them from 1/2 alluminium bar stock or blocks of hardwood
+Tim Ryerson
Freakin Awesome
I've used the "screwdriver" method myself. I would prefer wood or plastic.
Time i have one tries to use a a unsharpened pencil but you will never know when a bloddy particle of that fell in the chamber of your crankcase- as wood is quite vulnerable to the pressure you use to compress those rings
Exactly! No metal tool for this rings compressing job.

The rings rotate in a running engine at various rates if the gap positions move a little during installation it won't matter

Great vids.

I love these videos, I taught powersports(small engine, snowmobile, atv, marine and some motorcycle) at Fairview college in northern alberta for 4 years, doing something like these for the theory classes or demo,s before we actually went to work in the shop.is a great idea because its really tough to show 25-28 students individually these techniques in the time allotted in the shop. really hard to get around to everyone and make sure they all understand the procedures. excellent way to teach. nice job. and it also shows there are always other ways to do the job properly and with skill and end up with a finished product you can be proud of
+Tim Ryerson Thank you and please share!

How good does the method 2 work on Harley in frame motor rebuild ?
Another reason you would want to do it like this is you may not have enough clearance to get a tool underneath the cylinder. I have installed many this way when there is no way possible to use a ring compressor tool on the cylinder.

Right? Some pretty bent people over this...😝
Make sure you got a rag or such to catch the circlip, so it can’t falls into the case.
This video is a big help. Thank you. For your vidos
Since no one seems to no I'll ask here witch way does the mess exspander ring go in when its installed on the piston does it come together as a ( m ) or a ( w )
Good question. I'd like to answer deeper than yes or no. Can you sub and I'll circle back? It really helps us creators grow. Appreciate you!
You can always give us a high 5 here: www.paypal.me/how2wrench
It comes together as a (w) is what Barton power sports told me n johnsburo ar

I use a combination of both methods. I install the piston into the cylinder on the bench with a compression tool. I install one circlip and partially install the wrist pin. Then I go install it on the bike. Not gonna lie, sometimes It's a pain to install the last circlip, while holding the jug. Would like to see someone come out with a circlip install tool. Maybe motionpro makes one?

They exist but are costly as they only fit each size wrist pin.
Method 2 great for chainsaw. Thanks.

Luber is always a good thing to use
used hose clamps as a ring compressors in a pinch once lol
mattmboa, that's a great idea
i have to install my pistons on a honda rebel engine, im so using the 2nd method tomorrow cause i had such a bad time trying to install them and not having any luck
The second method is exactly how I built my motor. Why does harley hate that so much?
I use a hose clamp for my ring compressor as I went from 88 to 97” and the piston pin is in ring gap
One of these times I will have to actually try it. I've had many folks mention it over the years. I've been fortunate to have the special tools.

damn i bet Thats a sweet class.
I never had a problem just using my fingers to compress each ring as the cylinder drops, the piston has be up high enough to get your hands in there but not so high the jug won't catch the studs, tall cylinders you can get away with this, short cylinders would be more difficult
Very helpful. Thank you
i love a piston bike so my cycle
I just squeeze the rings with my hands. I have long hands. Or the second way
I can't stand working on Hoggley-Stevensons !!! : ) I've got a joke for you .... what is the difference between a Harley rider , and a Hoover Vaccum cleaner ??? The position of the dirt-bag !! : ) L.O.L. beg my pard !!
+brad b Thank you and please share!
You didn’t tell the joke right. Skip the rider part, then “On the Hoover, the dirt bag sits on the inside.” Another one: If Harley-Davidson made an airplane, would you fly in it?? 😅

I like it

@@How2Wrench no problem, I liked it because I'm in the middle of an 07 Yamaha YZF R1 valve job. and on the 07's and 08's R 1' if you take the cylinder of the motor you have to due the same. However, as you know thr R1 is a inline 4 cylinder, making things a little bit hard.

@@How2Wrench Thank you dude, I've doing this kind of work for 45 years. I wanted to be a motorcycle mechanic when I was young but at the time there not a lot opportunities for it. so worked in the automotive industry for 22 year, graduated with a degree in Computer science and went to work in the automation industry.
