Talk about perfect timing, just finishing up a wall sconce candle holder at the local blacksmith guild. Now you show Rosettes, I think that would be just the thing to dress up the mounting screws. Thank you John.

My wife and I were having our morning coffee when I got the notification that you had put up this video. We settled in for a Black Bear Forge morning chill our. OBTW, my wife thinks we are soul mates or something because we both dress similarly, right down to the holes burn in the belly region. Love the rosettes. Thank you for showing us.

Love the look of handmade products with off centered holes uneven lines and mushroomed sides ,gives me a sense of pride that I made it.

The one with the four deep square depressions would make an awesome drawer pull. Very nice work all around.
When you use the treadle hammer; it gives a good reason to get one. I think I'm speaking for myself and a few others.

Ps nice Winter wonderland we have no snow in the Harz mountains its 12 °C outside
The snow covered shop looked a post card. Here in my area its been between 90 and 107 F for the last few weeks. We don't see much snow. In your usual way the video was informative and really a great use of material. Thanks for the insight.

An interesting project. I would suggest welding a piece of square stock bent 90 degrees to square tube fitted into your hardie hole. That would corral the work on 2 sides whilst you work on it.
Interesting concept that I could see as soon as I read it.

I'm about to forge up some light fixtures for our log home and I think the rosettes would be nice embellishments. Nicely Done and thanks for sharing your expertise and superb skill.

John I now know for sure that my retirement shop will have a treadle hammer.
Given the choice between a power hammer, hydraulic press or a treadle hammer right now I would pick the treadle hammer I think. Not that I would mind all three of course.
On the second rosette you made, I would cut out the thin part so it is just a stepped cross instead of a misshapen square. To hold the parts you could use a pair of tongs held between your legs then you won't have to chase it around your anvil.

Thankyou. This gelled an idea for how I can forge a crude positive lock angle adjuster for a long reach gutter cleaning tool currently fabricating - ie a 6 or 8 step radial flat gear pair without the need for a terrible amount of shaper work. It kind of had me stumped but no longer. Beucoup gratitude.

I have to say, that for the next year, you should start working more with machines on these videos. And if you say that you can do all on the anvil, everyone should know that you could do it a bit slower and that if they don't have the machines, should try it out anyway... :D

The little flatter is generally just called a set or hand set. A set hammer would have a handle, like the one I used under the treadle hammer

When it is cold in the shop, do you ever heat your anvil up? This was a great video!
Yes, I heat large pieces in the forge and set them on the anvil.
On the colder days, is it better to worm your anvil before you work?
I do when wits very cold
Just looking at the first one you forged and thinking you could use a small ball punch to put an indent in the triangles between the centre and the set down areas......? Not sure if that would just be to much detail? I love the last one you made 👍
The variations are endless. Give it a try.

Hi John, any tips on keeping a propane tank warm in the winter? My tank keeps locking up on me even though it's a 40lb tank
The best advise is simply a larger tank. The 100 pounders do much better
I have a stupid question. When you say “striker” do you mean a second human standing next to you swinging a sledge hammer? Or is a striker a special tool?
The former. Basically a friend that can swing a hammer well.
It seems to me you should have made a flat plate hardy with a pintle to keep the rosette from sliding around.
So when did you get the drone?
About 2 weeks ago its a lot of fun.
What's the advantage of the "flair" on the set tool? Just for reaching in nooks?
Larger working surface mostly. I have others that are smaller sizes.

Nice organic look! A question! Is the tradel hammer blow stronger than the power hammer blow? It looks like, to me! ^^
I think the power hammer hit harder. But the treadle hammer does have a good punch
In other words punch the center first.
