    Idea to test wear resistance of soles beyond hardness!
    Use the bar-drop-set-up and a precise scale. + belt sander with new belt.
    -Weigh the shoe.
    -Let the bar rest inside a shoe, pushing the heal against a small belt-sander.
    -Run the belt sander for a fixed amount of time.
    -Compare the weight of the shoe after test to original weight to determine how much rubber has worn off.
    I suspect some softer soles will wear less than some hard ones and I am curious to know!

    I've had a pair of the Bruins for the last 8 months. They took two or three weeks to break in, and the first week was really bad. Out of the box they're not comfortable. That being said, after a month or so they got to be so comfortable that I didn't even notice them on my feet. And worked great during the winter, too. The only thing I'm not sure I like about them is the absolute lack of ground feel compared to normal barefoot shoes - though that's to be expected for a boot

    Awesome review. In my experience the softer outsoles tend to have better performance on ice and slick rocks, even if overall durability is less. For me the increased traction on slick surfaces has forced me to choose slightly less durable outsoles for the increased traction, because falling off a mountain seems like it would kind of suck.

      There is zero break in with soft star shoes...its a trade off of durability for flexibility. The MegaGrip/Zegama sole they use is very flexible but still provides a good ground feel. I have the shoes made with the same sole and suede midsole. I think the only bad thing about soft star is you might want extra support...
      I did a 6 mile hiking with a 25LB pack...it was nice but zero ankle support, however no blisters, no hot spots...soft star out of the box is what you get, no break in.

    I walk about 15-20 miles a day on blacktop. Ive liked the barefoot shoes (whitin canvas) so far better than work boots. It took a while to get used to. It my back feels much better. Same with my knees and hips. My ankles still get sore, and so do the balls of my feet, but that’s getting better. I was an infantryman in the Marines. I’ve always worn boots. I never would have thought that barefoot style would be so much better for my body. I have a pair of the Jim green boots ordered. I can’t wait to try them. These Bearfoot ones look interesting. Same with the Vivos. I might buy them both and and see how long they last. Tim Pros with the anti fatigue soles were my go to.

      I have been using barefoot shoes for quite a while. First Vibram Five Fingers for running and the gym. Then other brands gradually replaced my other shoes.
      I don’t walk nearly as much as you, but I’ve found most of these brands to last very well. The soles are surprisingly durable. Partly because they encourage you to walk more gently. They won’t last as long as Tim’s but they hold up well compared to a squishy running shoe.
      The Vivo’s in particular hold up very well, though I find their prices really high.

    • @Heretowatchstuff
      @Heretowatchstuff 29 дней назад +1

      @@popuppete I don’t run anymore. lol. My body has been through to much for that to be fun anymore. I was interested in the 5 fingers, but then the lawsuit happened and I stayed away. These Witins have been ok so far. They are wearing at the ball of my foot and a little at the heel. I definitely walk softer. And I now realize how hard my heels would strong the ground. But that was trained into me. Takes a while to get out.

    • @Heretowatchstuff
      @Heretowatchstuff 29 дней назад

      @@popuppete I did put in an insole. The balls of my feet were really sore the first week. I’d wear them the first couple hours then go back to my Brookes running shoes. Total opposite end of the spectrum. lol. But I have about 300 miles in them now. I will probably go without the insole on my next set of shoes. But I can definitely feel my foot reshaping.

    • @popuppete
      @popuppete 28 дней назад +1

      @@Heretowatchstuff easing into those shoes is the smart way to do it. That was pretty much the end conclusion of that lawsuit stuff (along with big companies shouldn’t many unsupported claims)
      Easing in helps reduce injuries as you strengthen parts of your body. There’s times you need to have support or protection, certainly lots of jobs that require it. But for most activities, I prefer to feel the ground beneath me and walk more naturally.
      Retraining your walking habits takes a little while. I’d say it took me 2 solid months. And if I am exhausted I still heal strike at times.
      I don’t really run. Just a mile with the kids or playing softball or something. I’m not a performance athlete. For that kind of casual exercise the Vibrams are great.

    Probably the least comparable with the others, the vivo. it's like a sneaker, a tech-shoe. not a leather boot like them others. different categories within the barefoots. and none of them are hiking boots, really. The bruins for me, looks like they lack some fitting. it's bulky on the forefoot, just look at your footage. I'd bet my right arm the softies will fall apart first. They look so appealing to put on, because of the wool and the craft, but when you see what they have chosen to do with the leather on the toe and around that area, this will open up quite quickly if you don't take really really good care of them. Glad to be able to see inside all of these. Really helpful. Vivo will always be tech-driven. They are always pushing out new designs, but they have already made their best pair of shoes and boots, so I'm not sure why they for example have chosen to wait until now with a proper tall shaft on their boot, when it's on the wrong pair :p The last thing I would mention, is that many of the brands have started working with rubber professionals. What that does is making the rubber sole appear what we know the brands can do, NOT what they have chosen to do with the soles for the shoes. The outer sole WILL wear out, it will not last for decades, even if they CAN make rubber that lasts that long. It doesn't matter if it's Vibram or Michelin, they don't tell us what they have chosen to do with the outer sole for the shoe, which means it can wear down after 1Y or 5Y.

    After all your sawing and evaluation of what makes a quality boot..... what is it that made the barefoot design so attractive to you?
    It seems like the polar opposite of the quality you've praised in PNW boots like Nick's etc.

    I wonder if there's been some bad blood occuring in Rose Anvils barefoot colab with Jim Green for him to specifically make a barefoot boot video and not mention Jim Greens seems suspiciously political omitting Jim Greens when they're widely regarded as one of the best, if not THE best barefoot boot options for consumers at the moment.

    • @bobabo

      I'd bet on him trying to be fair to the field by giving other barefoot boots a spotlight. He's mentioned that it isn't his intention to attempt to corner the market. And I highly doubt he's trying to censor a collab boot he's made multiple videos on already and clearly loves.

    A very minimum of 5,000 years using leather for footwear and I hope we've come to the conclusion that it's the best material for boots. Even conceptually, wearing a bigger tougher animal's skin to protect our soft skin makes perfect sense.

    I like the barefoot shoes because there's not a chunk of shit hanging off the bottom of the foot. But I don't like how they almost always come down to a point at the toe. Looks dumb.
    I'd second the altima maritime shoes for a dissection soon. I do like mine, have had the same pair for a few years now and they're still going.
