    It’s interesting how the commentary community changed so much in just a few years. Commentary used to be making fun of kids on the internet, it came from a right wing perspective and the audiences were dominated by young men. And yet now, it tends to focus on content mills and mega RUclipsrs, it comes from a clearly very progressive place, it’s much more politically engaged and its audience is now slightly more female than male.
    The only thing that really stayed consistent was that the RUclipsrs themselves remained predominantly men.

    Honestly, I think we're getting to a point where it's like anything is possible for women now. Like I don't see the problems of starting a commentary youtube channel for women. I know there's plenty of women doing commentary on video games, movies, tc shows, social issues, celebrities, and more. The dominance thing isn't the issue. It's the mysoginistic comments that people make that prevent women from exploring different interests. I watch mainly male commentary because I just like the male commentators that I liked. Nothing about gender. But I will never stand behind someone that doesn't watch a woman doing commentary just because they are woman.

    • @Twink6629-lg3te
      @Twink6629-lg3te 19 дней назад +35

      Dominance is 100% part of the issue. It’s much harder for women to climb the ranks, whether it’s streaming, or making RUclips videos. Most largely successful female streamers are up there because they are attractive or sexualized to a male audience (not all but a lot) and especially around the 2016ish times on RUclips as well. Things are getting better and changing now tho, but for the longest time, if you were an unattractive girl, good luck getting numbers. Even if you are funny as shit a huge swath of people will hate on you and tell you that you aren’t just cuz you are a woman. Success in general is male dominated. Men are most millionaires and billionaires, most CEOs, most positions of power in many industries. If you are a woman and you don’t cater to the male gaze in your appearance it’s going to affect your career. That’s just the world we live in right now unfortunately.

      @@Twink6629-lg3te success in general is male dominated and you only have women to blame for that if you’re really upset about it. Men are more aggressive in their careers, they’re usually more ambitious too. They enter more big fields than women do, like STEM. As for the sexualisation thing, the only reason that’s what a big percentage of successful female streamers/RUclipsrs have is because they lean so far into it. They realized that instead of climbing the ladder like everyone else they can do some sex appeal and gain a boost in viewership. I know of multiple female content creators who are just as big or bigger than many of the commonly sexualized ones, and they don’t lean into the sexualisation or even have an audience that gives a shit about that. You can’t really say society is making it so only sexualized women are popular when it’s actively women setting that precedent.
      As for the being pretty thing, that’s basically been the case for all famous people since the beginning of time. Do you seriously think that popular male creators or celebrities aren’t considered hot by the majority of the online community, let alone their audience? Attractive people are more appealing to look at. Pretty privilege has been benefiting people regardless of whether their genitals are an innie or outie.

    i think in general commentary videos appeal to more women than men simply because women like talking (in general) more than men. i started watching commentary because i was lonely and missed having my brother, sister, and friends to talk to and make jokes with. for me it was like the youtuber was a friend telling me about something interesting/funny-it made adjusting to college a lot easier. and it’s comfy watching as well, like a warm chocolate chip cookie or something

      @@mattz459well your original comment is actually valid bc different demographics of people have different viewpoints. i’ve watched multiple videos relating to the same topic but they all have slightly different viewpoints bc of their backgrounds. a white woman may talk about her experience with idk like buying a car just from a gendered standpoint and a black man may talk about it from a racial standpoint and then a black woman would talk about it from a racial and gendered standpoint that takes intersectionality of two different oppressed/marginalized groups into consideration. your background really matters

    • @ItsBecauseImBored
      @ItsBecauseImBored 29 дней назад +10

      @@mattz459On top of the things already described, one additional reason could be that it's important to expose yourself to different cultures and ethnicities. Where I live is not very diverse and this can lead to my brain going "how unusual" for a split second whenever I see someone who looks vastly different than me. I don't want to think about people that are different to me as other so I think it's beneficial to normalize it by seeing it more. And one easy way to do it is to seek out creators that are e.g. black - which sometimes can actually be hard because the algorithm has stuck you in a mostly white bubble. The first black creators I had to actively seek out and only later did they then also get recommended to me.

    • @mattz459

      @@ItsBecauseImBored Let me pose a question: What’s the difference between a Black person and a White person or anything other person, for that matter?
      Aside from superficial differences and self-imposed ideologies, there is no difference.
      Your scenario was odd to me. I have to assume you don’t live in the United States.
      Regardless, I find your reasoning to be a bit hypocritical. “I don’t want to think of other people as weird so lets divide ourselves by how we look so I can focus on one particular group instead of the other.”
