+trevor sewell Hi Trevor, good to hear from you and pleased you caught up with the programme. I'm fine and look forward hearing how you are. Cheers Hugh
I have a story I need help writing it do u guys know anyone that can help? My bro married someone who claimed she was one of the youth workers there my mum was from there an I was born a few streets away from where the riots were. I got away , my dad was known as scotch jock an lots of the folks of Shields knew him.
So many familiar faces, almost forgot what this place looked like before it got updated. God I used to love going to the old fish quay when I was little before it turned into a food festival.
+Hugh Kelly I am studying poverty and inclusion in North Shields schools. Thank you Hugh for creating and posting this important and very moving record.
Hi Tim, Thanks for your comments. Here's a few more relevant films. Poverty - It’s a Crime (30 mins 2001) is a video investigation by three young people from the Meadow Well Estate into the effects of poverty on young people and its relationship to crime. Tom Laws, Beverly Office and Wayne Ryder talk to young people in Scotswood & Byker, and contrast their experiences with those of people from Jesmond and North Shields. Despite the money spent on physical improvements very little has changed for people themselves. Young people give their views on poverty, school, crime, drugs, CCTV and policing on the estates. Themes of making choices and taking responsibility are presented within ideas of what type of youth and community provision would work best for young people. 1st few minutes ruclips.net/video/735uIzTK4f0/видео.html Tackling Poverty (10 minutes 2012) Young people discuss their experiences of poverty across Northumberland. They anticipate a future that is less certain than the life experiences of adults around them. University and further education are no longer seen as proven routes to productive employment. What do young people need from adults in local authority area like Northumberland? On You Tube ruclips.net/video/vmlqwInt8NE/видео.html Cheers Hugh
Hi Hugh, Wow - I never expected a reply! Thanks very much for taking the time, and for the links which will be very useful. I wonder if the schools today still show An English Estate, for students to discuss if they think things have changed? I have been on a short placement in a North Shields primary school - perhaps it would only be appropriate for Year 6 - but definitely for high school kids. Have you ever worked with the schools to show and discuss the film? Thanks so much again, Tim
17.30 classic "lads have gotta have the money for tac n that"👌miss the good old days bars of good tac, buckets all day this greens way too strong these days good vid m8
Thanks for sharing I remember this being on TV at the time. I recognise a fair few faces from this. 20 years later nothing has changed. There's still a lot of decent folk and those who still try to better themselves through various means, will anything ever change in the Ridges? - I don't think so. Sad times.
I have lived on this estate all my life and with my five children that are all in very good jobs i remember the riots as my youngest child was born in 1991 April
I do have links to that area. It is close to where I live I know the area well. I was only young when they took place but my grandfather lived right in the area it took place and was completely unaware of it. Very strange goings on.
i lived in north shields when this was happening. 5 mins away from the riots. we drove past a few times to have a wacth of it and see the fireman etc put out the mass of fires. place has changed a lot since then. my dads side of the family grew up there.
This is incredible. Truisms how hard they appear, but the truth no less. I love this place, proud.
Blimey haven't seen this for a long time hope all is good with you Hugh - Trev :)
