Hi Colin! Fab vlog! Nice to see you showcasing one of the less publicised sports on the island. Did have a go on a friends bodyboard, many moons ago, at Newquay. Was freeeezing!! Needed something warmer than a swimsuit! Lol. Teeth wouldn't stop chattering after for about an hour, and felt nauseous due to swallowing half the sea!! Moral of story? Get proper instruction/gear, as it put me off for life!!!😝👍😻

Your Newquay experience is so funny - I lived worked & surfed there for 4-5 years a few years back & i know that water shock feeling - its the chilly North Atlantic there compared to the warm mid-Atlantic in Tenerife! 😆 like going from a fridge to a sunbed! Thanks for looking! X

Hi Hugh - yes absolutely great place to start. It might look a bit daunting when you walk down the beach to the water but don’t let that put you off. The water will be warm in December - around 17-18 degrees & the air temp in early-mid 20s. My advice is to 100% hook up with any of the surf schools in the video & they will supply you with a qualified instructor & all the kit you need. You’ll go out in a group with other beginners & you will have a great time - probably even standing up on a board by the end of the session! 👍
Hey Colin and thanks for the informative video! I’m planning on heading down there end of October to surf and I wanted to ask you what you thought- better for surfing, El Medano or Playa Americanas? I’ve been surfing for a while but I wanted to take another lesson and want some decent 2-4 waves to play in after my lesson. The town El Medano is more my style and scene for a town but I just don’t know about the surfing and if it will be fun at all. What do you think mate? Thanks Nick - appreciate your time watching. I’ve got little experience actually surfing in El Medano - literally a couple of afternoon sessions. There’s a lot more windsurfers/kiteboarders there & the surfers are more local & seem to be advanced. That said, it was friendly & fun. Las Americas is definitely better if youre going to take another lesson or 2 - plus its not really competing with the windsurfers/kites for waves. Its more surfers & SUPs. Why not try both?
