And now the spring rates are the same still for the same feel left and right. But I do agree spring tension can make up for some bad shaft play.
Yes spring tension has a role in the response but that's just one aspect of the adjusting of a pedal but its common drummer knowledge most of your slave pedal lag comes from the quality of the driveshaft. Any clue on why my slave pedal is still lagging? I have tricks shaft on, but the slave pedal still stops rocking back and forth within seconds, just like the stock drive shaft.
Good video, but why exactly should be surprised here that a heavier shaft would retain movement for longer? It has more weight to it and more centrifugal force, so of course it's going to be moving for a longer period. That being said, it does seem as though it is much more heavy duty. I too am disappointed in the design of DW's drive shaft (my original broke near the joint pretty early on, and a replacement is about $90). Before I open my second pair of DW 9000s, I will probably do an in-store comparison before buying them. Thanks for alerting me of this Trick Shaft.
Incorrect. The heavier drive shaft does not help keep the pedal moving. Adding more weight makes something harder to move. The only way the extra weight would be advantageous for keeping the pedal moving would be if it was placed in a position to have leverage to create centrifugal force. But the drive shaft placement and its design as well as the axis it rotates on lends nothing in the way of centrifugal force. The beater weight in this instance would be more likely to contribute. The real reason the trick drive shaft keeps the pedal going longer is because no energy is lost via the tricks superior bearing joints. When you have play in the joints, every cycle back and forth energy and momentum is lost as the pieces knock into each other. Solidify that area and the energy stays where you want it. in the beater and spring mech.
But what im saying is that its negligible when you consider the mass at the end of a beater. A drive shaft rotating on its axis imho is barely contributing. Take it off ans swing it from one end sure. But that's not its natural path of motion on a kick pedal. @@Nefville
Thanks for this informative video. If I get DW, it will be DW 9000 XF with the trick shaft. I tested this at the store and I couldn't do the doubles strokes evenly. Now I know better. I also tested Tama Iron cobra power glide. Does anyone know if can take the trick shaft and use it for the Tama pedals too?
Thanks for the vid ....I’ve got a Gibraltar 9611 direct drive I love it but the slave pedal squeaks like mad and it’s the linkage...so I’ll definitely get one of these ...thanks
It's funny you say it. I own several 9000 pedals and playing on this one verse the others just feels like a whole different pedal. This shaft has taken a lot of gigs and abuse and is holding up stronger than any of the DW shafts. I wouldn't hesitate at all to buy it again even at the semi steep cost. But you definitely need to make all the right adjustments of course to the pedal cause its awesome!
@@hbaboris you will seriously not believe your own eyes how crazy different and better that shaft is! Play with the old one for a minute, then swap it and give her a go and watch your left foot struggle to keep up haha
I absolutely love it still. Best decision upgrade without a doubt. I own 3 other Dw pedals(two 9000s and a 5000) without the upgraded shaft and what a stupid difference it makes from kit to kit.
@@ZackZweifel I have an iron cobra and a pearl eliminator. I bought both of them used. Trick has one shaft that will fit both, so I guess that's what I need.
@Petar Pavasović it's honestly 99% the exact same feel. First time I did the swap it took me a awhile to get use to how much more responsive and faster it was!! I promise you will not be disappointed. And if you are ill straight up buy it from you to put on another pedal. Haha
@@ZackZweifel That's what I want to hear, thanks! My dw5k's feel like crap and I'm starting to think the pedals are the issue. I will have to wait for this little thingy to be in stock again to find out! 🤣
What’s strange is this shaft doesn’t help too well on their own pedals. I have a pearl demon chain and the left and right pedals are a lot more balance than my pro 1 v. Really a shame
@@ZackZweifel company said it’s the way the pedal is designed and that the pearl is different. Such a shame for expensive pedals. I know you can’t do a lot because you are putting extra energy into the driveshaft for the slave pedal but it’s kinda band on the trick pedal
Does it connect easly on the drum kick, becasue the digital drum kick pads are flat not round as an acoustic ande the dw 9000 has a round shape at the bottom.
Wow! I have the same problem with my Iron Cobra... the left beater loses a lot of energy when connected to the slave pedal and stops in like 3-4 seconds (bounces for a much longer time when not connected). Do you know if this exact shaft model would fit on the Tama? Thanks.
I believe they make one specific for cobras. It's a different fitting compared to the DW's. DW's have a square fitting compared to the cobras that had a circular fitting with 1 flat side
@@MartinBellamyMBDrums Yeah... there is a model of it that fits most of pedals from other brands (P1V6P Retrofit Drive Shaft (Fits Most)). Bought it from Mike Dorfman of Trick drums, and I can tell it is a very good piece of gear. It fits perfectly on my Iron Cobra. Recommended.
got one for 5002 before getting my Direct Drive last year. The amount of effort to keep the slave consistent is so much less when using these. Truly a night and day difference and well worth its price tag
Thanks for this. I have the Tama Speed Cobra and the slave pedal always feels a bit sluggish. I have used Iron Cobra, Pearl Eliminators, DW 5000/9000, Mapex Falcon, Gibraltar double pedals and Pearl Demon Drives. The Demon Drives were the only ones where the slave felt close to the main but overall I didn't like the light feel of the pedals. Do you know if there is much difference between the Trick, Demon Drive, and Axis II drive shafts?
alexntemperley from what I know the demon drive is built off same idea as trick but not as heavy duty. not sure on Axis one I've never seen it in person.
Well...Trick and Pearl shafts are exact the Same :) Trick Sold the idea to Pearl for their demon Drive. Axis and Trick feel pretty Same to me BUT Trick works for others Brands Pedals aswell.
This might be a stupid question, but do you know if the Trick drive shaft (P1V6 Drive Shaft) work as a replacement for a Tama Speed Cobra double pedal? I mean, the slave side is always gonna be a bit behind, but it's a bit too much for my taste.
I did the same thing but I got dead blow beaters from Trick too now I'm about to sell my DW 7002 upgraded pedal and just get Trick Bigfoot double or the cheaper pedal from Trick still at over $600 it's not cheap.
As much as you paid for that pedal the u joints should have came heavy duty it's one of the most expensive pedals on the market I'm thinking that shaft would make any pedal out there play much much better
Iv bent the rods during my travels with the many gigs that I’ve done with the DW 9000 and it’s frustrating because your screwed. Iv bent them back and thank god I have a machine shop but a $600 pedal should be prime gear. Anyways good vid. I’m just gonna start playing air drums since I’m tired of the bullshit. Wish me luck👍
Does anybody know if this is suitable for the new Tama 910 Speed cobra? the joints of my drive shaft get looser and looser and I look for something more durable than a half year ^^
I know this a late reply you probably have already figured it out..for what its worth, they come in 2 models (the Trick drive shaft) 1 for the Tama& Pearl pedals and another 1 solely for DW Pedals, so you just gotta choose the Tama ones!
This is why I don't like DW. I paid 600 bucks for my 9002 and I'd have to spend another 130 for another company's drive shaft for the slave to feel good. Have you tried the speed Cobras or Yamaha direct drive? I'm considering one of them. I wonder if this shaft would work on the Yamaha too?
+Larry Tate yeah it does make me dissapointed that I spent so much on these pedals and then realized by spending more on just a shaft it improves them tremendously. they spend all this R&D time on this floating drive etc etc yet have never once improved their old drives haft. as for spring tension I would sale on a percentage scale 100% being tightest 0 being loose I have mine around 65%.
I'm going to buy the drive shaft now. But before I do can you help me with one thing. I like to keep my pedals closer than most people. Can this trick one go as close as a Dw one does on the closest setting. I only keep my drive shaft open about an inch on each end in the Dw one. Thank you
Hey man have you had any problems with this drive shaft yet? i was watching this video because i was losing my mind trying to "fix" my dw9000 but I'm definitely going to buy this trick drive shaft so thank you haha
no issues at all! this drive shaft is worth every penny! I even just made a custom sleeve to store it in my pedal bag when traveling. I have an older 5000 pedal and I'm contemplating buying another but that's just a practice pedal. it's worth it
Hey man I just want to say I also have a dw 9000 and some of them has a wrongly placed left side cam out of the box. I can see yours as well. Just take left cam off and put it a hexagonal step below. Then both right and left cams will be at the same position.
+Sinan Kececi really? Interesting. I'm looking at my pedals right now and I don't know how you could or can tell if it's off or not? How did you hear of that happening?
I think they suppose to be symetric at the first place=) I changed the cam the day that I bought it and I am ok with it right now. Also with my pedal there were other problems as well they werent really well assembled out of the box. After some adjustments it was ok though=)
Sometimes I wonder if these people make up stories about how bad something is. "My drive shaft has literally fallen off when playing" the only way it would do that is if you don't regularly check your gear after playing a few times. I've been using the 5000's for awhile and I've never had any issues like this guy claims..
I literally play every weekend sometimes twice a weekend on a 10 piece kit. there's a lot to put together and sometimes you forget to tighten things when in a rush. it has literally happen to me and it's unfortunate but true. play 100 shows a year and see how many times you forget something just tightening that one tensioner.
+Zack Zweifel I play every weekend as well, (twice including a 2 hour band practice) and I find the time, not trying to start anything at all! I would just think it's common sense to check stuff wether you're at home or waiting around wherever you're playing.
I found that I had problems when I lifted the pedal by the shaft without thinking about it. When I realized I was doing I stopped and never had issues again.
NathanDrums I’m with u on this, I play numerous hours every single day by myself and then rehearsals and practice and shows every week with my 2 bands and I have never forgot to tighten the lugs on my pedal. That’s pretty common sense to throw the rod and beaters on and not tighten. It’s second hand nature and instinct to automatically tighten down the nuts tight as possible. If your serious about ur music career and look at it as such and are professional about it, u check all your gear no matter what. tighten down every piece on every stand, pedals, throne, heads, sticks, everything. Here in bmore we only get 10-15 minute changeover between bands so I set all my shit up backstage when the band before us starts their set and have everything ready to go. If your opening that’s even more time to get ur stuff together with no rush from load in time until doors open which is usually couple hours in between with plenty of time to spare. I can understand shit happens and shit breaks but I’ve never forgotten to tighten something especially my pedals.
To evoke the slight play in the cam of DW compared to Trick, is pure and simple bullshit. Something that you do not feel when playing with a double pedal.
I´m so pissed at DW. The 9000´s are in no way cheap pedals, the features are great, but it sucks that you might need to invest even more money to get em to work at 100% capacity. My 9000´s have that super annoying play on the u-joints, it´s making me crazy. They really need to design a better shaft.
@@ZackZweifel obviously people have different preferences when it comes to drum gear but I'd rate the ACD shaft higher. Before I open my second pair of DW 9000s, I will probably do an in-store comparison before buying them. Thanks for alerting me of this Trick Shaft.
Let's add the fact that this timing "test" is subject to huge variations.
@@purpledc1 Not quite incorrect, mass increases inertia. Inertia = MA (Mass times Acceleration)
The Tama pedal shaft is different than the DW. P1V6P fits the Tama and P1V6DW is specific for DW.
@ZackZweifel thank you Zach! I will look into this for the Tama pedals. If I get Pearl eliminator red liner I will get the trick shaft.
Thanks for the vid ....I’ve got a Gibraltar 9611 direct drive I love it but the slave pedal squeaks like mad and it’s the linkage...so I’ll definitely get one of these ...thanks
Nice video...please, tell us your final thoughts after using the new shaft on stage....playing....Thanks,
It's funny you say it.
@@ZackZweifel Thank you for your reply....I just purchased this shaft to use in my 9000.....anxious to test it.
@@hbaboris you will seriously not believe your own eyes how crazy different and better that shaft is! Play with the old one for a minute, then swap it and give her a go and watch your left foot struggle to keep up haha
I'm feeling you man! DW s drive shaft, has some issues! Nice vid! I was wondering, how you're going to test them! haha cool :)
this is quite intriguing hmmmm, thanks for sharing
大阪の三木楽器で取り扱ってますよ。
このTRICKシャフトはdw用のとpearl他用だったかな?の2種類がありますので購入の時は問い合わせした方が良いです。
How are you liking the trick shaft now? From what I can tell, it seems to be the best one on the market.
@@ZackZweifel You could just carry the shaft around with you.
@@ZackZweifel Is it worth the $130?
@@kekag I'd do it again without hesitation
Do you still use it?
I now own three of them! One for each pedal... I can't go without it
@@ZackZweifel Thanks! Does it just improve the feel of the slave pedal slightly or does it make it the same as the main pedal?
That is strange and crazy indeed!
It connects very easy.
@@ZackZweifel Thank you
Wow! I have the same problem with my Iron Cobra... the left beater loses a lot of energy when connected to the slave pedal and stops in like 3-4 seconds (bounces for a much longer time when not connected). Do you know if this exact shaft model would fit on the Tama? Thanks.
From what I know yes should be the same and work
I believe they make one specific for cobras.
Have you tried nylon straps on those? I found that they help make my 9000 pedals way smoother as well.
I have no actually. I have several pairs of 9000s so I'll gladly try that out
Thanks for this.
Well...Trick and Pearl shafts are exact the Same :)
Trick Sold the idea to Pearl for their demon Drive.
Axis and Trick feel pretty Same to me BUT Trick works for others Brands Pedals aswell.
My guy is 7 years ahead of me 🤣
where did you buy that?
Sweetwater.com
my dw7000 shaft had spaces after 2-3 years of use i keeped it for 9 years.
This might be a stupid question, but do you know if the Trick drive shaft (P1V6 Drive Shaft) work as a replacement for a Tama Speed Cobra double pedal? I mean, the slave side is always gonna be a bit behind, but it's a bit too much for my taste.
Nils Jonsson I do not but I know their website had a nice list of all the matching pedals to slave drives.
Thanks!
Yeah Trick makes a driveshaft that fits Pearl, Tama and Mapex and a separate one for DW
Now you just need to get rid of the DW 9000 pedals and get a Trick Black Widow Bigfoot double.
I did the same thing but I got dead blow beaters from Trick too now I'm about to sell my DW 7002 upgraded pedal and just get Trick Bigfoot double or the cheaper pedal from Trick still at over $600 it's not cheap.
Not necessary if what you look foor is power and not featherwight 300bpm strokes
Will the trick shaft fit on a 3000 double pedal ?
Yes it will
As much as you paid for that pedal the u joints should have came heavy duty it's one of the most expensive pedals on the market I'm thinking that shaft would make any pedal out there play much much better
Was the dw lubed? Or are you comparing and old arm to a new one?
Lucas Johnston that was brand new pedal not even a month old.
Thank you, guy!!!!
Great tip thank you....
Thank you
super video!
I have an older 5000 pedal and I'm contemplating buying another but that's just a practice pedal. it's worth it
+Zack Zweifel oh dude that makes me really happy to hear. I'm definitely gonna be picking this up tomorrow haha
+Zack Zweifel both of the cams should be at the same angle at one of those steps where cam is placed it becames equal
You are so right!! Taking it apart now!
I think they suppose to be symetric at the first place=) I changed the cam the day that I bought it and I am ok with it right now. Also with my pedal there were other problems as well they werent really well assembled out of the box. After some adjustments it was ok though=)
what happen to your DC5?
it's still in a million pieces. you want a video update on the current car status?
+Zack Zweifel of course! please
Dude ur suposed to put the slave pedal in an angle then compare it
Sometimes I wonder if these people make up stories about how bad something is.
One word for ya. Flywheel.
thought this was a car part for a sec lol
я думал он играть будет)
For the money..... You can bye alot better than dw...
I really liked my DW 5000s…but God that drive shaft is so ass, especially after a few years of having the pedals
I´m so pissed at DW. The 9000´s are in no way cheap pedals, the features are great, but it sucks that you might need to invest even more money to get em to work at 100% capacity. My 9000´s have that super annoying play on the u-joints, it´s making me crazy. They really need to design a better shaft.
man that DW shaft is pretty crappy for how much the 9000 costs
So true, they could do better
Why can't the cat be there? That's kinda dumb.
The ACD Unlimited drive shaft is superior to Trick and DW.
Really I'll have to check it out!
@@ZackZweifel obviously people have different preferences when it comes to drum gear but I'd rate the ACD shaft higher. Also ACD Unlimited is run by one guy that custom machines all the upgrades, pedals and parts himself, I'd rather support someone that has a passion for drums and not just a big company like DW or Trick. Check out the ACD Unlimited RUclips channel 👍
Dw is drums..... Not pedals....
Its very nice but its $120!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do you really think even $30 worth of parts labor, shipping and development went into that? Look man I support everything Trick does but the industry as a whole is extortive.
The dw one is $180 or so
@@Dan_the_Great_ Jesus why did I put so many exclamation points in there 😂
PS I eventually broke down and bought Trick Dominators, totally worth it, still pricey but if you want one of the best...
total rip off of the pearl demon drive double pedal drive shaft.....
cliffard, Trick licensed it for Pearl 😂
@@bdubzdrumzexactly and moreover those thieves at Pearl pass those licensesing fees right on down the line to the customer. Cracks me up seeing brand loyalist dismissing products they use themselves with a different name stamped on it🤣
