    • @powerofk
      @powerofk 5 лет назад +7

      @@indy_go_blue6048 When I first saw that part, it never made me cheer for Vader... which I think is the point. The point was to have you feel Luke's torment... this man who he hates, despises even... is his own father? And he had been made to believe that his father - who he had never met and had actually been hidden from - was dead (his "aunt" and "uncle" stated that he died in an accident, while Obi-Wan states that Vader killed his father). Actually, learning about Anakin/Vader and his fall allowed Luke to face him again - this time, with love.

Back then, nothing else did that and it felt alien to us. Then we saw the tag line "In space, no one can hear you scream" it was all we needed to know about that movie.

      Have you ever seen Brigsby Bear? It's a great film, but watching the trailer you have no idea what the film is actually about. The plot of the film is pretty much completely left out, so when you actually get around to watching it, you're still completely blind as to what will happen apart from the fact that the main character has an obsession with Brigsby. It's just enough to peak your interest without spoiling the movie.

      A couple of my favorite Asian horror films are Shutter and Tale of Two Sisters... both were already remade for US audiences, so avoid those because they were not good.
      Shutter has the typical creepy long haired dead girl with some solid twists and amazing scares.
      Tale of Two sisters is a mix between a typical ghost story and a psychological thriller. You need to have some patience though for the film to build upon itself.
      Audition and Pulse are of course solid too, but not my favorites. Audition is very difficult to sit through and Pulse is a little hard to follow.
      A fun short from anthology Phobia 2 is the segment "In the End". You should be able to find a decent English subbed video online for free somewhere. It's by the same people that did Shutter, so the scares are solid but it is mostly a comedy that you could enjoy on the same level as Cabin in The Woods.

    6 years later and still spot on. It's all about money. Movies with trailers with all the tropes in this video somehow end up making more money, so the executives demand the marketing for their movie be exactly the same. Even if we were to only allow 30 seconds for every trailer, studios would still find a way to frame very pivotal moment in there. Have you seen those 5-second trailers on online ads saying what you're about to watch is the "official trailer"? It's like every frame is a different shot.

    I'm still mad the T2 trailer spoiled that Arnold was the good guy this time around. The trailer showed the scene of him with a hand in the air saying "I swear I will not kill anyone". I always wondered how cool that surprise might have been if it was a twist. The way it's filmed up until the two terminators find John Conor at the mall it's never revealed which one is there to save him until Arnold points a gun at him and says "get down". This is about 30 minutes into the movie.

    Something that I've noticed, which is less common, are trailers that appeal to emotion in a deceptive way. It can be done through music and heavy editing, which tends to quickly set a mood. The best example of this I can think of would have to be the _Battle: Los Angeles_ trailer which used the song _"The Sun's Gone Dim and The Sky's Turned Black"_ by Jóhann Jóhannsson. The movie turned out to be far less moving, but I'll never forget that trailer.

    I'm pretty sure Jarhead's misdirection was intentional. As you stated, the movie is about the downtime of being a soldier but another aspect that wasn't mentioned was about the character's imaginative expectation of action when going to war only to never get it because reality kicks in. At one point, he actually loses his shit when he was about to finally snipe a target that he's been eyeing on and have his training not be for nothing only to have it be taken away from a bombing run. The same goes for the trailer, you expect action because it's a war movie only to have those expectations subverted.

Reboots and decades-late sequels tend to use the classic movie theme in a similar way.
