  • In this episode I install a backup/reversing camera in to the van, and then hook it up to my head unit! Thanks for your continued patience with the sporadic uploads - I think I've found a better rhythm again so hopefully you'll be getting a new video every week from now on ❤️

    I'm Matt and this is my channel - The Atypical Workshop. I was diagnosed with Autism in early 2020 and after initially struggling to come to terms with my #neurodiversity, I've since learned to embrace it. My alternative brain wiring allows me to see things from completely different perspectives, and to think of unique solutions that others would likely miss. The name 'Atypical Workshop' came about through the fusion of two very different themes:
    During lockdown, while teaching myself carpentry, I also began watching Atypical (Netflix). The show both helped me to understand what I was going through, and reminded me of how capable I am. On 'The Atypical Workshop' I aim to use my unique skill set to both overcome the challenges I face and provide entertaining and informative content.

    Whoa! You lost met when you started messing with electrical stuff. I built out my own camper van a couple of years ago, but I hired all electrical done. At 77, I figured one little shock could do me in! 😜

    I know it's been a while for you, but time doesn't exist on the internet. What a fantastic resource, thank you! I was planning to just attach the camera to the rear light wire, but your solution seems a bit less firehazardy.

      Cheers Rick, I appreciate the kind words even after all this time (or no time 😁). I found it to be a worthwhile time investment once I’d figured out which wire went where! It’s a more future-proofed solution too - if it fails, the modification is fairly accessible instead of being hidden behind the van conversion

      @@AtypicalWorkshop I’m really enjoying your videos. You’re really thorough. Hope you’re still at it (building stuff, that is), you seem to have a knack for it.
      Finished the rear cam yesterday, partly thanks to you!

      @@RickMeijer Great news! I'm very much building stuff still, just haven't had the time to do much on my van for ages. I made good progress towards the end of last summer and filmed a bunch but the weather turned before I was done, so there's a fair bit more to make and film, and a whole lot more to edit! I also had to replace my sills in november in time for mot (also filmed and edited, just not yet released), so there's a fair amount in the pipeline, just hopefully sooner rather than later haha

      I was happy with the installation, but the field of view in these cameras isn’t nearly enough. Useful for parallel parking but not much else. On my new van I’ll change it up and fix one to the roof rack instead

    Nice to see someone actually usi g a haynes manual... The only thing I'd have done differently is soldered with wring for the reverse cam.. Not a fan of "quick click" style connectors.

      I find the photos of the engine bay in the manual are very hard to follow, but I found the wiring diagrams to be invaluable. I’m sure you’re right with the soldering, but for me the reusability was really useful. Thanks for the tip though! 👍

    What other modifications do you think I should make to the van's body? Projects like this are great videos to make because they keep the channel ticking over whilst I work on more time consuming projects!

    Another great video. Can you tell me what head unit you have and did you use a converter kit and if so which one? Did you consider wiring to the reverse light rather than fuse box?

    • @AtypicalWorkshop
      @AtypicalWorkshop  2 года назад +1

      👍👍 Although I consider the head unit (Pioneer AVHZ7000DAB) to be a fantastic piece of equipment, I wouldn’t recommend it. I bought it a few years ago for my car, which didn’t support a double din head unit, hence the folding screen. Putting it in to the van required me to get a double to single din conversion kit. I’ve never been able to clip it in properly because the small metal clips ping off somewhere under the dash, even when I used super glue. Double din CarPlay units are also cheaper than folding single dins. If price isn’t an issue, and you’ve a lot of patience to install it, the main benefit of this unit is that when folded away, it looks like a bog standard 3rd party stereo that isn’t really worth stealing. You can also tinker with the viewing angle which is pretty neat!
      For the wiring, I did initially wire it to the reversing light, but there’s a very good reason I subsequently wired it to the fuse box which escapes me right now. I’ll have a think!

    • @AtypicalWorkshop
      @AtypicalWorkshop  2 года назад +1

      3:45 wiring in to the reversing switch means that you can have all the connections in one place or thereabouts. If you powered the camera from the reversing lights, I think you’d still need to wire the head unit in to the reversing switch separately? This way, you can feed two birds with one scone 😎

      I got it from Jackson’s leisure I think - www.jacksonsleisure.com/rooflights/thule/omnivent/motorised/motorhome/caravan/vent/. It’s a Thule omnivent

    Great video! Can you please tell me the model number of the camera and where did you get it? The usual little square box ones you see look so flimsy but this one looks really good. Keep up the great work 😁

    • @AtypicalWorkshop
      @AtypicalWorkshop  Год назад

      Hi Simon. I believe this is the one I got:
      batteriesandsolar.co.uk/products/phono-bumper-mount-camera?_pos=2&_sid=fb2df6832&_ss=r
      You can get them cheaper on eBay but some of them do not allow you to disable the parking lines overlay. Problematic if your head unit has some built in too. I actually found this style of camera to have too narrow a field of view, rendering it pretty useless unless for reversing through a narrow gate for example. Works well enough for a simple parallel park mind. Good luck and thanks for your comment :)
