Black and blue - 999 response at night

- Night time response and the responding at night has its obvious challenges..... its darker!! But the roads are predominantly quieter but still lots to consider.
Interesting occurrence in the double whites at 4 mins in. Bus stopped on the approach to brow of a hill and so had to go round. Probably more i could have done to anticipate but worked out in the end.
Also interesting to see the light fit when the street lights aren't there anymore.
Definitely need to remember to turn my white strobes off at night.
Stay Safe all.
Love the videos, Enjoy watching how a first responder takes decisive action when driving.
Another fascinating video. And I never forget, when watching one of your shouts, that there's someone in dire need of help just after the video ends.
Amazing head light makes mine look like candles!
I see you must have got your siren switching relocated now, Chris . . . I hope it feels a lot better & easier for you when you are using them now, too?
Damn, those high beam headlights are incredible. So crisp at the edges
If anyone is wondering why sirens are being used whilst there is no visible traffic, trusts generally insist that they are used between certain hours ie 0700 to 2230, though this can vary on the area whereas between such times use of them needs to be justified 🙂.
Those speeds simply don't bare thinking about - over 100 on dual carriageway and pushing 100 on unlit country roads. The level of concentration and continuous risk assessment is way higher than any racing driver has to do on a race-track just going in circles.... Must have been a potentially very serious incident to put that level of skills out. Stunning driving.
Still amazing with you as a moving disco ball, with all the tunes, people still rarely look in their rear view mirror.
Thanks Chris for another excellent informative video. Keep up the great work you do. Gary.
I need to see another walk around with the new patterns
Will do.
@@ChrisMartinEMS and the new siren control please! Lovely vid as always
Calmness personified. Your videos are quite amazing, Chris. Thank you for all that you do. A question, if I may - how do you maintain your focus to such a degree?
visibility on dip left beam seems much better than a previous video .
Ever thought about asking for a fourth siren tone be added to that box as well, such as the hi-lo?
I do like when there’s a fourth siren
The hilo is a very effective siren....more effective than the wail and phaser put together! hilo is basically a wail and phaser mixed together and is great at short distance and long distance but has been faded out for just the standard 3 tones, nowadays its just your standard RSG sirens fitted with the same 3 tones and don't even have bullhorns fitted, its apart of this new nonsense scheme for response drivers to not come across "aggressive" when responding hence why you hardly see bullhorns used now and responders waiting 89 hours to go round a car that hasn't seen them rather than blast a bullhorn or the cars horn at them., hilo just seems to grab attention better but yeah hardly any get fitted with it now unless its a private ambulance they normally get fitted with RSG rumbler tones that have all 4.
@@typicalpanda3252It is effective but I found not as loud as the other siren tones.
RSG control units mostly newer ones can be reprogrammed with all tones and bullhorns but it’s quite a fiddle and you need a software to do it
Most companies just buy them already programmed with the standard 3 tones, very rare you have a customer asking specifically for all 4 tones or the hilo.@@mouldyrx8
It still actually amazes me how long it takes some drivers to realise there is an emergency vehicle behind them, even in broad daylight it's not that difficult to see or hear them, but at night it's especially easy to see a Christmas tree of blue lights hurtling towards you from any direction. Too focused on themselves and their phones or music to be interested in what's happening around them!.
Could you explain your thought process between 0:35 and 0:47 and where you wanted the van to go? I feel like as the driver of the van I would have been confused as to where you expected me to go since you were pretty much in the middle of the road, discouraging the van from changing to the left lane.
Hi and good question. I positioned myself in the middle as I wanted the van to stay in the right lane and carry on so i could split the lanes and traffic so in essence yes, the positioning was to encourage to lane change at all.
I often wonder how many drivers heave a sigh of relief when you continue past them and they see that you're not the police.
What is the flashing white light I can see reflecting off the hood? It looks like the lights used in the US for pre-empting traffic lights, do they have that in the UK?
It's simply spot lights in the roof boom. Some response vehicles in the UK display blue and white to the front and blue to the rear when in motion then red to the rear when "at scene".
It tends to be paramedic cars with the alternating white, though police cars are fitted with white spot lights they're not permitted to be used when in motion. Though this may differ between force areas.
Can I ask why he is driving, what looks like an Undercover car? Is there Undercover Ambo staff?
Thanks Chris. Question about the situation around 3:40 - double whites and limited forward vision/anticipation. Here in the US, some instructors advocate shutting down lights as well as sirens, so traffic can continue at normal pace until circumstances better permit you to request the right of way again. Any thoughts?
It's largely down to the discretion of the driver and always the individual situation. Though at traffic lights, if it means civilian vehicles will need to contravene a red light to permit an emergency vehicle through the rule is to extinguish lights and siren until the traffic lights change.
LED headlights make it all smoother
Nice drive (as always).
Great response. Were you driving your Audi or Skoda?
The Audi.
Wish we heard more of the phaser
I just noticed you are not tapping the horn to change tone. This is better as the extra horn can itself be confusing.
wouldn't even class those roads in the video as "quieter", certainly a challenge
would it be possible for you to explain the different types of calls you get on the radio for example what does "3-7" mean? Is it a callsign?
I'm fairly sure the 3-7 is his callsign, that is why he answers with it.
Yeah so his call sign will be something like RQ37 - shortened to just 3-7.
Hi Chris. Would it be possible for you to add some information regarding what you are responding to? I.e cardiac arrest, TBI etc. I would be interested to know.
That’s not allowed - identifiable data is generally a no go.
If anyone can identify where he’s going and what job he’s going to, it can be worked out by anyone who knows.
About those high beams, doesn't Audi have matrix LEDs that only exclude the spots of oncoming cars or those in your lane? In the video, it seems like they're always shutting down completely (always quite late, too) when there's traffic. 🤔
One of the many problems with various high beam technologies is that they just don't work! Automatic Highbeams and Matrix LEDs just cannot respond fast enough and cannot predict cars it can't see that a human could expect, or they generate tons of false positives that make them useless
I've an interesting one with certain Audis and matrix LEDs - by coincidence often get followed home by the same person driving an Audi with them at night when leaving work at a certain time, when I'm in a regular car i.e. Qashqai the matrix LEDs actually work brilliantly dimming me out and providing extra light to see people on pavements, the hedgerows, etc. but if I'm driving my pickup or in a van though it dims out the rear view mirror area the wing mirrors are lit up like small suns compromising my night vision and in vans that is often an issue as they don't have a rear view mirror just the wing mirrors... quite dangerous.
MATRIX LED are an expensive option on this model.
@@logiclee1 i believe the tech pack
@@NorthernNewEnglandDashcamstop yapping he just doesn’t have matrix headlights in his spec
Does the white lights flash even when your headlights are on?
Yes they do
How do you find the flashing white in the window at night time? Can you turn the flashing whites off on the keypad?
Hi Chris great video and thank you for what you do. Quick question how do you find driving at night in glasses I sometimes get a bit of glare on mine which makes it a bit more difficult to see? Not that I am driving at anywhere near the speeds or importance you are.
Ok I have the anti glare coating on my glasses and do a lot of night driving definitely worth it in my opinion not that it counts for much 😂
Great video as always Chris, and just a thought for people generally, many of the lights for internal car "night vision", are beyond our vision range, but could be hurting our eyes as they can't react, so please be careful. Check the manufacturers advice carefully.
omg, those auto high beams are awful, literally everyone incoming was blinded 😂
I have the same car. He is using them manually. There is no way my Audi does the same as this one shown
@@gary63693 we;ll never find out until the uploader confirms or denies. I'm talking of my own experience with my car which has the same delay
Would you ever consider turning off the blue lights when following on a double-white line? Even with just blues and no siren on it seems clueless drivers think they need to let you pass like that bus and van did. Obviously this is on them, not you, but I know you already hang back so not to pressure but if you can't pass anyway then would "going dark" on blues be helpful? People can't drive any faster than the limit anyway even with blues on.
Also nice to hear the honking to switch tones is gone! And did I hear a pip of bullhorn at one point as thanks? Great video as ever.
Thanks - I posed much the same question a few minutes ago, hadn't seen yours before I did.
What camera’s are you using, or are they organisation fitted type?
This one is a VIOFO A229 Pro dash camera
Great work!
Hey Chris, my names Chris also I was hopinfng to possibly email you or somethinfng to pick your brains as I'm looking to become a paramedic
Tha ks for your time
Different car or has the siren control been switched away from the horn?
Siren horns been changed
By crikey, that thing doesn't half go.
You’d think an Audi would have Matrix lights
The double white line rule really irritates me. It should be exempt for all emergency vehicles. 6:08 is the perfect example why.
No. It’s there for safety.
No blue light driver wants to overtake on them.
Double white lines are put in place where there's inadequate visibility to make a safe overtake at normal speeds. At higher speeds the risks are even greater.
MR.MARTIN IS MOVING OUT I REPEAT MR.MATRIN IS MOVING OUT, MAKE WAY NOW
Honestly, I bet that take it out of you having to concentrate that much AND THEN still having to perform advanced medical aid.
At just shy of a ton poor old Bambi wouldn't have stood a chance! Great video.
70 plus in a 40 is well over & in the event of an accident Chris would be looking at a charge of dangerous driving.
@@WhiskeyGulf71if you can justify it then there wouldn’t be a charge for dangerous driving 😂
I was thinking the same. Hit a deer at 90+mph and Bambi might not be the only one saying goodnight.
Better to simply be thought of as an idiot, than to type it out on the internet for everyone to see for all time.@@WhiskeyGulf71
I can`t believe you and medics like you are volunteers! Upmost respect!
I don’t think he’s a volunteer
He does some volunteering on the side but he is also a fully paid NHS critical care paramedic, as seen in this video
hey chris are you APP or doctor

I do this every morning in a Peugeot 206
Increasingly clear that people just don't understand that you're not allowed to cross double white lines. Really confuses people - you can see them thinking 'why isn't he coming past?!'. Public education needed maybe? Suspect few know what the rules for blue light driving are.
Permitted to cross a solid white line yes but only when the vehicle being passed has stopped. Though a stop can be called when the vehicle is still moving but its speed has to be almost stopped.
There are actually quite a lot of rules that still apply even on a response run.
Need to dip those lights sooner sir. Those blue lights are bad enough, but coupled with the Audi A4's full beam. Yeah, dazzling as heck. lol
Matrix headlights Chris?
@@JonesThePhysics Not on this model spec
The way they are reacting I some situations make me thing they are automatic dipped/main beam.
VAG auto highbeam system is awful. I have it as well. Blinds 20% of oncoming traffic.
This is why i switch off my auto headlights and use them manually
Im not sure I'd carry on with the night videos, Chris. Doe's absolutely nothing for your hairline....
🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks
I assume the bus was at a bus stop otherwise that was terrible driving from a professionally qualified driver.
There is no way a bus stop would be placed there, it would create a death trap! Just good old fashioned awful driving.
Should have gone for the matrix headlights. You blinded a good few people.
Looks very Yorkshire m62 ish 😂 or a59 around that area.
good use of the high beams i like it
Terrible use of high beams, blinded so many!
@@andy0175 Audi auto high beam system. It doesn't work well at normal speeds.
@@logiclee1 He wasn't using his high beam assist, I have the same car. They are not that awful. lol
@@gary63693 I have the same system and get similar results
@@gary63693 none of them work well at all. Tired of being blinded constantly by them and it's getting worse with the trend of 4 lights on the front.
And yet when I drive like this...
What really would have helped here is matrix headlights. The cars where it has high beams always on but turns it off only on parts where it can see other cars. Really cool and useful technology for situations like this.
They don't work!
@@andy0175 Yes, they do.
@@zoid9969 only for the person sat behind them!
04:20 to 06:05 your siren use is completely pointless and alerting nobody of your presence! Other than that, good, smooth and progressive drive. Nice work 👏
But it may alert somebody to his presence, can't just assume that nobody is out there and so they're not needed ;)
@@williamstrachan Pretty much. None of us especially enjoy the sounds of sirens but if folks were to amble into our path and we'd chosen not to use all available alerting systems......
Turn the sirens off half the time there’s no need for them
I always hated coming up behind bikers. We had a response call, turned out to be a fatal, to a biker. He was wearing a fixed visor helmet, reducing hearing and limiting sight, but, the cretin also had earphones in, playing very loud music. Didn't give himself a chance.
Was the bus at a bus stop, or did it just stop. Even if they do, it is still technically illegal to cross double solids, but they gave no alternative. This is where the British driving is let down. They get taught to pass a test, not learn how to drive, or respond to emergencies.
Highway Code 129: Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid
You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
@@difusleas Or when instructed by an officer to do so. Why is that bit always left off? Even at 30 mph, I was always dangerously overtaken by cars. Was it because they were jealous of me being fitter than them?
