Ludwig von Aegir, basically a good third to half of what went wrong with the Adrestian Empire personified. It's a wonder he and Ferdinand are even related if we didn't know they were father and son. Probably a more dignified death than he deserved all things considered but this moment is really all Ferdinand. The worst of Adrestia's nobility cut down by the best of it, and the only man who ultimately grieves is the man who swung the lance.
    Rest in Peace Billy Kametz.

Actually it makes a lot of sense when it’s clear Ludwig is basically Ferdinand who went down a bad path. Azure Gleam even emphasizes it more as him trying to prove he’s worthy to be a savior to his “Emperor” that he was more than capable of aiding her.
Nevermind the fact she’s been reduced to a puppet, showing how delusional Ludwig is.

Ferdinand commenting about how Edelgard leaves all these duties on him as her attempt at solace makes sense when you learn a bit about Ferdinand in his support with Shez. He admits that he has to keep doing his best at something in order to not wallow in his own grief. Edelgard gave him those tasks to deal with the troops and fallen noble houses so that he didn't have to be overcome with grief and sorrow over having to kill his own father.
Leave it to Ferdinand to get that Edelgard might not be the best at compassion, but she tries to help in her own way.
