Interesting conversation. It's good to hear that SFABs are actively avoiding the adoption of some sort of "special" mindset. They are not SOF nor should they be as BG Jackson said. I agree with the statements about SF building the "pointy end of the spear" which is great for short-term results. But SFABs will demonstrate their worth through "long-term sustainability" by focusing on developing staff functions in operations and logistics (planning, organizing, prioritizing, etc...) as well higher level HQ functions. Not sure where SFABs look for potential new members but I'd think folks with experience as ILE instructors, CTC OCs, and AC/RC OC/Ts would be good places to draw from. Also, given the SFAB role in assisting host-nation (HN) forces with US equipment, I wonder if SFABs have people in their formations familiar with foreign military sales/ security assistance efforts/ Title 22 funding? MG Brennan said something about showing them "what right looks like". I'd beware of such statements as what looks right to us isn't necessarily right for the host-nation force. We should never seek to replicate the US Army in other countries. We may also want to reconsider introducing to our HN partners equipment currently used by our forces as they may not be able to sustain it. ANA and Iraqi Army would've been fine with PRC-77s and acetate overlays on mapboards vs. the high-tech stuff we were providing them. Finally, what role do SFABs play in developing police/ law enforcement elements? HN internal security efforts must include police forces meaning SFABs ought to have the ability to provide instruction on civilian law enforcement vs. MP functions. Just curious about that one.
