I'm glad to see that your interests lie in small-scale backyard agriculture and aquaponics, what you call home-grown culturists. That said, however, being an amateur hydro / aquaponic dabbler since inspired by Organic Farming and Gardening, as well as the old Mother Earth News, (before both publications sold out "to the man" so to speak), I've found that either of these sciences rely on expensive start up costs for materials, labor and ongoing energy. In addition, fish suppliers now tend to produce hybrid species that call for recurring costs of brooder stocks. It is the same in the pet trade which is much different then when I grew up in my pre-teen and teen years I raised everything from live bearers to anabantids, danios, and other species. Today this is becoming more and more difficult.
To be really "backyard" and small scale you need to put yourselves in the place of families with 2, 3, 4 or more kids and a small plot of land. I know 'cuz I've come up from the South Bronx to a moderate suburban lot where through trial and error I've managed to have a truly barely functional small scale venture with hens, quail, rabbits and honeybees. The only thing missing is small scale fish farming. These endeavors along with traditional garden produce the needed and balanced mix of carbohydrates and proteins for a healthy life.
It would be great if you could concentrate on these small scale backyard "farmers" who fall between the cracks of agriculture.
