The excitement of the fa cup was special in those days & if you got to the next round waiting for the draw on the monday live on the radio from lancaster gate...magic.!
What a fabulous clip! As an Aston Villa fan I hugely appreciate seeing the rare excerpt of the then Villa manager Tommy Docherty. I must point out however this is from "Match Of The Day" and not Grandstand. The theme music at the beginning is the real giveaway....it is 'Drum Majorette',the original theme tune of "Match Of The Day"!
Same here Anthony, this was one of the first few games I enjoyed at Villa Park. The ''Doc'' was in the early stages of steering the club away from relegation danger at the foot of the old Division Two. But come the following 1969/70 season and nothing went right. Could barely score a goal and victories were rare, we soon slumped into the bottom two and never escaped as we plummetted into the old Third Division in 1970.
@@lennylaa1686 ever since I can remember....my earliest memory of supporting Villa is being in Rhyl and being disappointed looking at the paper seeing that we lost 4-1 at Burnley....I think we were in the old Second Division,1972-73 season
@@anthonybailey1966 Yes, I remember that defeat and also the 0-3 walloping they gave us at home. I was five years earlier, I went to a couple of games in 1968...a 0-1 FA Cup defeat v Rotherham on 17/2/68 and 0-1 league defeat at home to Middlesbrough, Division 2. Months later, I travelled away 1-1 v Fulham and 0-1 v Oxford. But they were a poor team, struggling badly.
Strange how they omitted the name of the programme in the titles. The big "give away" is that David Coleman started off by saying "Good Evening" rather than "Good Morning".
For older Aston Villa fans, the first few shots are remarkable. So much excitement bordering on delirium as we defeated QPR in the FA Cup. The manager being, of course,...Tommy Docherty. The ''Doc'' did a great job lifting the club out of the doldrums as we endured sevaral miserable seasons for most of the 1960's. At this point, he steered us away from the dreaded drop into the Third Division but sadly, there was no escape the following season as we went down in utter humiliation....our worst ever year - 1969/70. Virtually from the start, we were anchored in the bottom two relegation spaces and never recovered. A very, very disappointing and depressing season.
Alan Weeks was actually the second host. The original presenter was Keith Macklin. Weeks started to present the show when Macklin defected to Yorkshire Television
@@dlamiss Macklin was Eddie Warings No2 on Rugby league, but only did 2 games for the BBC. He was a lay preacher who became the voice of Rugby League on screensport .
@ 1-24...that's Brian Tiler, RIP,...he was cup-tied and could not play. These were great shots showing the great tumult as we beat QPR 2-1, crowd - 40,000, goalscorers Brian Godfrey and Lionel Martin. The ''Doc'' really lit up Villa Park after several years in the doldrums and at this point propelled us away from the Second Division relegation zone....he was the great saviour.
Those were the days. These days, they would probably arrest you for watching from a Tree or a Roof. Back then, people were willing to LIVE fully accepting that untoward events happen. One can clearly see the joy and exuberance of the Men and Boys in the stands. Back then, the Men were real MEN and the Boys would grow into mature MEN. Many thanks for posting this footage. it transported me, if only temporarily, back to my Childhood.
My novelisations state that action replays were introduced during the mid-1960s and they were played off video tapes, video discs and video cartridges.
A lot has happened at Exeter since then read it up in the history of Exeter and you will see! not so sleepy Exeter! We have played Man U twice and The Brazilian national team. in a friendly to comemerate the time we played them in brazul may years ago.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the original Match of the Day theme, not Grandstand.
Grandstand did not show live football

Cool to see no ads on the front of the shirts!

The good old days..packed houses at small grounds. When a lower team could dream of knocking out a big team. Of course you loved the camera pisitions.
I am in touch with Carlo Sartori at Present...Great memories When the Fa Cup Meant something special

Only one sub allowed and Exeter's was David Pleat. Rather more famous for other exploits!
