This was a hilarious but educationally fun video. I'd love a great sample library like this, but I suck at music, so I could never justify a purchase like this. You make short work of it through sheer skill and experience ^-^
VSL Special Edition is absolutely worth it. Especially great is the wwodeind legatos where you can also tweak it to have the velocity layers on a slider instead (assigned to modwheel or a fader), very expressive and realistic. I’ve used it A LOT in all my professional soundtracks ever since it was first released.

I really like the midi controller track idea for using the key switches. I'd just been making a new track for each articulation, and that works okay, but it can make for a lot of extra tracks.

I can't stand key switches. I use Spitfire libraries. You can switch articulations with CC32 (UACC). I work with reaper, so I've made custom actions (using someone else's script) that insert a cc32 value to the selected note. So, I just play the line, and then select the notes i want, press a button and the articulation is set, and locks. Plus, doing it this way, there is no problem like the one you had in 10:20, you don't have to play before the keyswitch note to activate the articulation. I can make a short screen capture video if you're interested in seeing this in action. As always, thank you for the video Guy!
With thigns like VSL with SO many articulations you;re right but this new system is a vast improvement over the original one. Im not a huge fan of articulation IDs and expression maps but in this case they are probably the best option

@guy at 26.20 you ralk about the "classic mistake".. could you do a whole episode about how to manage this as I often have issues trying to work out what I'm playing and why something sounds off?
There seems to be a very quiet high-pitched "A" throughout the video. Are you trying subliminally to give everyone perfect pitch by prolonged exposure??
How do you feel this compares to say spitfire chamber strings or studio strings/woodwinds? I’m about to purchase some spitfire libraries but if you recommend this more I will look into it more. Prefer spend money once then twice
Really loving the videos Guy. You’re so enthusiastic and such a good motivator! Can I suggest a theme fir a future video Guy? Why not dismantle a piece of music written by a newbie to all this and illustrate what could be done to improve it, whether it be technique or tricks of the trade as it were? I’m quite happy to donate one if my few pieces( only been writing orchestral music a matter of weeks and can’t play an instrument 😆) Any criticism would be welcome but perhaps you could use it as an example of what not to do etc. Not everyone who watches your videos is competent enough to apply for one of your courses. We do it for fun! ( Fun? Haha yeh right!!😄😂😂.). Cheers. Pete
Thank you for answering en passent a question I'd had about the fancy new keyboard. I'd been hoping the key lights might delineate the instrument range and switch notes, but they clearly do not. What a pity. 😢
What I mean is;......could you reproduce this on a keyboard, tare it apart, teach theory and instil into your audience to not be afraid to take on huge orchestral arrangements such as this.....and furthermore to prove that today's modern keyboard and software is up to the challenge.....I believe it is....I believe you are the man that can prove that theory!
Hello ,, ... Could you make a video ... showing different articulations of an instrument and how to handle it in the DAW ... for example .. on a track., .. a violin? .... in kontakt, ............ Thanks
With the previous version of the Special Editions (and other libraries), VSL actually provide expression maps for them, so no need to go to Babylon Waves! The VSL expression maps are actually superior to those from Babylon Waves, as they work the way you would expect them to work in real life, with some articulations being direction articulations, and others being attribute articulations. Direct articulations keep on applying (so sustain will keep playing until you switch to tremolo, or short etc.), whereas attribute articulations apply only to the note (so an accent, or a trill only applies to single notes, as it would in real life, and as you probably want it to), before reverting to what was already there before. Even better, you can have multiple direction articulations simultaneously (and attribute articulations as well), so switching on sordino will give you sordino versions of sustains, and shorts, and tremolos - all the other articulation types are unaffected. It might be worth asking those nice people at VSL whether they have created expression maps for their Synchron Player versions of Special Edition, as they are a better solution (if Cubase Specific - though Logic have similar sorts of functionality too) than the extra Midi track solution you demonstrate
This kind of an effect track concept was exactly what I was looking for. Being a "traditional" composer (I learned it at music academy, styles from 15th to 21st century), I use a scoring app such as Sibelius or Dorico and create a score what what I got in my mind. Now I have a way to work on the midi files. However: How to do that for piano, where all keys are used?
Great stuff. Yes, it would be good to see some more videos on articulation use. I'm sure you could've blamed Hans or John who must be knocking around in the cupboard somewhere!? Oh and it needed more Piccolo.. naturally. I'm a Logic user but doesn't Cubase have midi chase scan for additional midi channels? Wondered if that might save you having to jump back each time? Anyway, loved it as always and was perfectly timed for a cool down in front of the fan. 🙏
Articulation maps are definitely more convenient than key switches and are not so difficult to program, in Logic at least. I did mines for BBC SO quite easily. I use keyswitches, which are mapped on the "drum pads" of my keylab keyboard, only when I'm trying some ideas without recording. Furthermore using articulation maps instead keyswitches gives you the possibility to have a different articulation for each note of a chord; for instance a string chord triad, with 2 notes played as "long" and the 3rd one with a tremolo. Or mixing staccato notes with spicato ones in short chords. Idem with the brass ad woodwinds, cuivré + longs, etc...
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Do you think that MPE instruments, like the ROLI Seaboard, might be the future of making these already very capable libraries even more expressive?

I have twice watched this video. There are a lot of great ideas, but how can I use these techniques in Dorico -- or any other notation program -- where using key switches is impractical?
I think that is due to the articulation. There is less dynamic variety when you play sforzato...after all, it means "with force". I use the Vienna Instruments Pro sampler and when I load a sforzato patch I ride the expression controller to lower the volume.
@@Mansardian I do not own VSL but there are actually some libraries wich by default ignore key velocity, as most users control dynamics via expression/modulation mapped to faders. Thanks for your answer! It's a bit funny as Guy points ou how long he uses VSL before tha part and says "That's how you do it!" and switches to a new topic as he seemingly notices that the dynamics did not change. ;)
Strings always seem to hog the limelight so it often feels a bit like back of the queue for the woodies but VSL spare no expense there. The flirtists are good but I do love a good bassoon. PS - I wouldn't worry about the music content, Guy. We know you have pedigree credentials, and besides, this is light entertainment and a cuppa time :)
In my own experience, it is much easier to write in the key switches by hand. I would recommend keeping them stretched out under all the relevant notes, then you are not forced to start playing the piece at a specific point.
Interesting as always but severely marred by that high-pitched whine in the audio track - I’m surprised I found only one mention of it in the comments!
@Guy Michelmore hey Guy, what would you recommend for a realistic solo and ensemble string libraries that you can automate the vibrato and that the sound fits the fantasy genre, like the strings heard in the Game of Thrones or Elder Scrolls soundtracks?
Hello Guy, I see you have upgraded to The NI S61 keyboard (Thinking of doing the same). I recognise the Akai but what are the other two controllers that are sitting on top of your keyboard? Sorry, I'm a terrible gear nerd :/
Loved your comment .. A button for "Get me a cup of tea" .. You know .. why not Guy. We have online games with buttons ingame for "Pizza" wich will order a Pizza from PizzaHut" :p
I have great respect for VSL, especially VEPro and Mir Pro. Of all the sample makers out there, I feel the VSL player is of the best design. However, I really want to have the same enthusiasm about their samples. More to Guy's point, VSL offers more articulations than any library. Frustratingly, I feel VSL's actual samples lack realism. Not all of them, but enough to keep my purchase at bay.
About Sosumi, Steve Jobs had nothing to do with it, he was no longer at the company at the time and hadn't returned yet. But Apple folks still had a great sense of humour.

Those first 4 notes -> Howl's Moving Castle. Maybe in a different key, idk, haven't had any ear training.
love that score
In my own experience, it is much easier to write in the key switches by hand. I would recommend keeping them stretched out under all the relevant notes, then you are not forced to start playing the piece at a specific point.
This song turned out really nicely, so much so I had to stop what I was doing to write this comment.
yes thanks, was asking myself yesterday, How !
I'm hearing 'Peter and the Wolf' in there.
We flautists appreciate your concern. :D
:)
Genius ... Love it!!
Show us your Fl studio skills Guy 😁
Interesting as always but severely marred by that high-pitched whine in the audio track - I’m surprised I found only one mention of it in the comments!
Possibly a fan to keep him cool?
the sound of my brain overheating
Lets start a petition for a "get me a cup of tea" slider. Impossible? No. It's necessary.
sign me up
Nice!
“Come on Jeeves, we’ve got to sneak in to the Generallisimo’s pantry!
@Guy Michelmore hey Guy, what would you recommend for a realistic solo and ensemble string libraries that you can automate the vibrato and that the sound fits the fantasy genre, like the strings heard in the Game of Thrones or Elder Scrolls soundtracks?
Berlin and Spitfire
Hello Guy,
I see you have upgraded to The NI S61 keyboard (Thinking of doing the same). I recognise the Akai but what are the other two controllers that are sitting on top of your keyboard?
Sorry, I'm a terrible gear nerd :/
His last video (before this one) goes over his hardware
12:46 presumably the poor flautist will have had to do that multiple times for round-robins?
Um. Better than expiring though?
About Sosumi, Steve Jobs had nothing to do with it, he was no longer at the company at the time and hadn't returned yet. But Apple folks still had a great sense of humour.
bassoonist just play how deep is your love all the time, easy life. What was I doing 20 years ago, I was recording onto tape my dreadful and cringworthy music and sending via Military Mail to some chap who had to sit and listen to my dirge pingponged onto wobbly c90 cassettes. I like to think my music had gotten better. My first CD however that I sent off to the Beeb was in the top five in some chaps intray called Russell T Davies making some mad science fiction programme. Looking back so glad Murray got the gig!!!!!
There is a faint high pitched noise in the audio of this video and it's driving me nuts.
But why would you need this if you got BBC SO, bro?
