I just heard Bill Medley tell a funny story about Elvis. They were both playing Vegas multiple night engagements. One night during Bill’s show, Elvis thought it would be funny to bring his entourage and walk across the stage during Bill’s big number. So he does it just as Bill is hitting his big note, and as he passes him he touches his shoulder and says “hey Bill” and his group all walks across the stage and leaves. The crowd goes wild. The next night Bill’s show is totally sold out because everybody is hoping Elvis will show up again. Sure enough, Elvis shows up with his mafia in tow and does the same thing just to mess with Bill. So Bill waits until they leave the stage and he says “I don’t know who that guy is, but he’s really starting to piss me off”😂

The performance wasn't lip synced. On this video the live audio is replaced by the studio recording. The actual live performance, including the girls in the audience screaming their heads off, is also available on Y T. Why people think it's better to replace a live audio with a record is beyond me.

Bobby Hatfield was the won who won the coin toss (so it is said) to sing "Unchained Melody". His singing "brother" is Bill Medley. We lost Bobby in 2003, but Bill is still with us. ❤ Extra points if you spot Cher as a backup singer!

There wasn't a coin toss. Bobby sang this song for years with his original group the Variations before he even knew Bill.He brought the song to the studio and as Bobby said " he recorded it; real easy; I had that one in my pocket!" They each had their own solos. Unchained Melody was meant to be sung solo.

@@MC-fv4vv This was a time period when culturally "the Establishment" or the dominant culture shown on TV was finally changing in all kinds of ways (due in part to the Baby Boom post-war starting to hit their rebellious age and ignoring past prejudices). The result was that musicians and actors and others in entertainment where borrowing what they admired from each other at an increasing pace. So when this song was on the radio it was novel to many parts of the county and especially to older generations. Music tends to cross barriers, and this was one of the early ones to borrow a style of singing. I was an infant when this came out, but you can hear interviews with the performers and producer various places. Even when I was older it was still played on the radio and I'm glad to say it holds up today, but in context it was pretty novel at the time (sometimes novel songs don't hold up, but their voices and "the wall of sound" sure do).

What makes the Righteous Brothers unique is the difference in their vocals. Bill Medley's vocals was bass-baritone and Bobby Hatfield's vocals was pure tenor. It was the blend of those 2 different vocals is what made the Righteous Brothers unique in the music they sang. Each vocal complimented the other.

I’m 64 years old so much of it is unfamiliar but I enjoy finding a ‘new to me’ artist. Spoon is an example of having released quite a bit of music in the past 10 years that I like. Undoubtedly, they have used technology to enhance things. It’s now more or less what we demand of artists IMHO.

I love this song, and thanks to Top Gun, it was semi popular among most guys who watched that movie growing up. At a choir competition when I was in HS (1994) a guy decided he and a few boys were going to serenade a girl while we were waiting. Well, you start singing at a choir event, and everyone who can, usually will join. In a moment of group Hysteria which only happens in movies, around 40 guys started harmonizing and adding background vocals. No clue who was the focus, no one could see above all the guys at first. When we hit the line 'get down on my knees' every guy in unison spontaneously dropped to one knee gesturing in the direction everyone was facing... allowing everyone to see the girl sitting on the table with the lead guy holding her hand. She was beat red, how we didn't stop laughing was beyond me. It was fantastic. Just wanted to share.

You need to listen to Bobby(Hatfield)singing Summertime. Its phenominal! Also recently uploaded is the Midnight Special with them hosting in 1974. Its fantastic! Bill was having some voice issues so Bobby took up the slack. He shined. He also had a solo of He Aint Heavy which he knocked out of the park. Even if you dont react to it, its a must see.

I was in high school when this came out and it was a huge hit for years. We listened to Wolfman Jack broadcasting on "pirate radio" from Mexico. Perfect for rebel teens in SoCal and he played all the songs about teenage love late at night. We'd be sitting in our cars in our favorite parking spots with our girls on a Saturday night listening to this.

Their Bill Medley (deep) & Bobby Hatfield definitely one of the greatest duos ever, to me they were the greatest. Bobby sadly passed in 2003. Bill is still performing but with Bucky Heard and they get big crowds. For once in my Life & Soul and Inspiration are also great. Ive been a big fan since the start in 64.

I was only 13 in 1964 when this song was released. My brothers brought the 45 rpm 7 inch vinyl home and played it on our dansette record player. And I knew it was good then. And I know it is good now too.

The iconic vocals of the Righteous Brothers and Spector's "wall of sound". They followed with another hit, "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration", without Spector, but replicated he "wall of sound" technique.

I do agree that there are people today with great voices, there always have been and always will be. The difference between the music of my youth and the music of today and why the music of my youth is so much better is a combination of the songwriting and how music today is produced. Back in the day, songs were written and the music produced in such a way as to let the voices and the song shine. Nowadays it is the production that is put forward. How many producers can you name that have been working since 2000? Compare that to how many from the 60's and 70's? I can name 4: Clive Davis, Herb Alpert, Berry Gordy, and Lou Adler. They set out to make great music with the best singers and songwriters (who may or may not have also been singers), not to show off their own skills.

This was a live performance. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were amazing. Bills bass and Bobby's counter tenor were amazing. Sadly we lost Bobby a few years ago. This is blue eyed soul. Many people thought they were black until the lights came on and they saw Bill for the first time.

Great reaction! Your facial expressions really captured how we all feel listening to this song ... every time. And I've been listening to this song for decades because this was my era. I think we also need to give credit to the people who created the orchestration and the background singing. Everything together was perfection

R.I.P. Bobby Hatfield, Bill Medley is still singing.
